Our world is perfect, the books say.
The laws are made for a reason, and will benefit the whole of society.
But what is the limit of the law? How far should it go?
More importantly, what happens when you break them?

The wind tore at my coat as I stood, suitcase in hand, waiting for Drake to pick me up. My heart thumped at the thought of seeing him again- it had been years since our last meeting, the day before I left for college. We promised to keep in contact, to write every week, but schedules, time-zones and weariness had made that promise fizzle out after a month. How much had he changed? Was he still that carefree boy that I had fallen in love with met in the first grade? I knew he was a moderately successful owner of a small business, but that was not enough to paint me a picture of his character, of his home life.
He's probably married now, with a large family like the one he was raised in. A shadow flickered over my heart as that thought passed into my head. If he was married, that would put him even farther out of my reach than he was before... no, Leo, stop this madness. You know that you will never be together. Just settle for some nice girl that respects you, settle down and live a normal life.
"But what is life without passion?" I asked aloud, drawing some surprised looks from the people around me. What is the point of living a normal life if you cannot enjoy it? Should I even try? Why would anyone- My thoughts were interrupted when I felt a hand on my shoulder, which swiftly spun me around to face its owner.
"I've been standing behind you for a good five minutes, Leo. You are as oblivious as ever." Drake laughed after saying that, before bending down to retrieve some of my bags. "Since you've been away for so long, I figured I take you over to my place until we can get yours fixed up." Slinging a bag over each shoulder, he motioned for me to follow and I did, awkwardly dragging the remaining luggage behind me. He hoisted them up onto the buggy, before turning back. "Front or back?"
"Uh- back," I replied after a moment, deciding it was a good idea not to risk it. With a knowing grin, he jumped up onto the driver's seat before reaching down a hand to help me up. Taking it, I felt an odd sensation in the bottom of my stomach, but quickly pushed that out of my mind. Climbing into the back, I huddled into the furs as Drake got the horses moving, lost in the feeling of his gloved hand in mine.

Not the best thing in the world, but it's 11:00 p.m. where I am and I haven't had any coffee today. I've got more planned out but it would make this post super-massive, so I'm not going to bother with it for now.

In the orphanage home for girls, I lay on my dull gray bed, carefully flipping the pages of a old notebook. Yet I not dare read a page. Other people hustled and bustled in the hall, professors screaming at other children, threatening them with whips. No one did this to me; I was the good girl of the hall, never to ruin anything. I, Casey Bedore, was more on the optimistic side, but my hope was slipping because I had been stuck in this orphanage for over 3 years, and no one had ever even gone near my cell. I was about 3 and a half years old right now, so I have been in this place for my whole life. A sweet girl, I am, and always will be, yet I think that just isn't what people are looking for in a child anymore.

That was about to change.

I heard, as I set the notebook down, barren footsteps down the hall. Unfamiliar footsteps, coming near my cell. My hopes went through the roof, tail wagging, eyes fixed, and ears flicking anxiously. A black-furred male with a black cloak and bright blue eyes looked inside each cell, and shook his head every time. Mine was at the very end of the hall, so he came to my cell last. As he looked into my gray cell, obviously suprised by my bright appearance, he smiled at me and nodded, pointing myself out to one of the professors. I tried to be calm on the outside, but I couldn't. After being in an orphanage my whole life - well, so far my whole life - I knew I meant something when not any cell but mine got a I-want-to-adopt-this-child nod, no other cell even got a possibility. As he waved goodbye with his white hand, he was carried off by a professor and into a paper-signing room. Meanwhile, he came back about 5 minutes later, waving the adoption papers in front of my face, grinning excitedly.
My cell opened and I ran into his arms, and he embraced me like a father would do a daughter. I asked him quietly, "Can I see your face, da-" I paused. He nodded and gestured me to keep going. "Daddy?" Besides his vigiourus nod, he shook his head and his deep voice said,

"Never."

I don't even know...it just...happened. I started writing and it kind of took on a different turn that I had planned. Kinda sorta fits Concrete Angel by Martina McBride, though I only thought of that after I finished it. Anyhow...there ya go.

There is a man, sitting on the felled stump of a tree. He’s silhouetted against the bloody sunset, every hair on his head inky in the surrounding crimson. He sighs, lifts a hand to his haunted eyes, and wipes away the tears that stain his cheeks with telltale reflections of the light. Around him, the forest edge is quiet; no birds sing, no horses whinny at the oncoming dark. A breeze blows the scent of fresh bread on its travels.

He’s crying in earnest now, head in his rough palms as he clings to himself- holding the broken pieces together. He almost laughs; that’s something his mother would have said.

Shifting his weight slightly, he carefully stands- chain mail clinking around his chest. He falters, trying to regain his composure as he sways unsteadily. Then, with one hand, he blows a single kiss to the ground and lays a battered rose on the freshly overturned earth.
The grave almost glows in the fiery light of the dying evening.

As he turns to walk away, there is one question on his mind- how did we get here?
