Oh how the fire warms your skin, your parka hangs by the door as your old grandmother comes in from the Norwegian hills and sits down before smiling and saying:
"Come listen dear child. Hear the stories of the dark old north. Feel the snow falling on your face and smell the fire burning. I'll tell you a story. No, not a story nor fokelore nor myth. Something quite real. I myself was one of the unlucky lassies to be taken. Like many before me, I was an impatient and nosy child. I was about your age when a Isbjorn- an Ice bear- came though our door. He promised my family riches should I go with him for one year to a castle. I agreed and then-" She stops as there comes a loud banging at the door. Suddenly the door swings open with such might you know what lays behind it isn't human. You hope perhaps it's your uncle with a white stag over his shoulders, they are said to cause good luck, but no. You feel a little faint as a huge white bear walks in. He blinks at you and speaks in a primitive way, "You come with me." Your grandmother smiles widely like she hasn't in a long time. You grab your parka and nod to the bear. He flashes a toothy grin and takes you away. Now only if you knew the rest of the story...

Everyone lives in the same place where the bears take you.
The bears are bears during the day and men at night. They can't change otherwise.
Bears can be anyone from princes to travelers who were unlucky enough to be caught by a troll.
Trolls live long lives and take a new husband a year after the last one dies.
Each girl must live a year and a day with their bear without seeing their face at night to break the spell.
If a girl see's her bears human face then she's cast away and he must leave to marry a troll.
Trolls can't make things. This makes them easy to subdue.
Bears come into the girls room at night. NOTHING is to happen then. I can't force this rule enough.
Bears can't tell about the curse.

Personality: Friendly at first but will get very cold and mean if you pry too much. He hates being a bear and hates that so many like him have to go though it. He's very protective of people, even if he just met them. He wouldn't hurt a fly if he didn't have to.

History/how they got caught up as a bear or taken: He was a sailor once upon a time. A huge storm blew his ship off course one day and it shattered on a island. Few were still alive. Those who lived were taken by trolls. They were cursed and thrown into a castle with only one year and five months to find a girl, take her home, and break the curse. He's determined not to fail.

Personality: She's a stubborn girl who's trying to look out for her large family. She's mean when you meet her because she's quite stressed. She's also vowed not to take a husband so she can help provide her family and not take up money for a dowry. Once she knows and trusts you she'll be loyal as ever and nice. Shes sarcastic no matter what and hates seeing anything in pain.

History/how they got caught up as a bear or taken: Her family grew when her sisters homes were destroyed in a freak storm and her aunt died, leaving them with two cousins. Eleven people meant little money. She learned to hunt but wasn't terribly good since she hated killing animals, she was a good shot. A bear offering riches though? So what if this could be a con? One less mouth to feed. If the bear told the truth... Even better.
