I got 2 pets from the Advent box, but everywhere I look I see that some people got 4 pets. Did they trade to get them or did they get it from the Advent box?

Could be off-site, where they logged out and then adopted them.

Off site pets don't register on your account. A lot of people trade for them; for instance I have 7 now, but only 2 I adopted myself.
