So, I calmly asked them basically what they're saying is I cant have it unless I give them a normal zebra.

Some people use 'when you offer me a zebra for it' in the same way you might say 'when pigs fly'. They don't actually mean they're expecting a zebra for it; they're saying it isn't for trade and you'd have to offer something utterly ridiculous to change their minds.
