It was Love at first sight.
The moment I spotted her, I couldn't help but want to have her...notice me. Hear her eloquent voice, hear her say she loved me. But the worst thing of the situation is...well....look at me.
I've starved about my whole life, my ribs poking out abnormally. My eyes a bloody vibrant red, my coat as black as death. Fact of the matter is. No one would ever love me like this. Especially her. So I always admired from afar, sticking out my long neck from behind my little shanty shed and watched her prance around that green luscious field beyond the street.
What I would give to be on the other side of that accursed street. What I would give to not be me.
It was late in the evening, she had already been led away from the field, and I had ventured out of my hiding spot to stretch my boney legs. I thought I was alone. Just me and my thoughts, then I saw her. She whinnied at me...oh. That beautiful voice.....no. I shook my head and spun around, but she stopped me with a simple word.
"Wait."
I turned my frail thin face towards her, she trotted to the edge of her fence. My heart nearly lept from my chest. Was she really wanting to...talk with. Me? My eyes quickly glanced up at the sky, no full moon. Good. At least she couldn't see me that well. At least so I thought.
She stuck her head over the fence, those big. Brown eyes. Watching me.

And that's how we spent the night. Eyes locked without a word. It appeared she was...curious. Maybe she didn't know what I was? Maybe she did. I don't know. But what surprised me is she returned the next night. Stopping me again with one simple word.
"wait"
And so I did. But she didn't speak. Nor did I, how could I? An imperfection. A blemish like me had no right to speak...to an angel Like her.

So the weeks went on. The same approach. The same response. She was still as radiant and beautiful as any. And I was still in love.
That night I waited again on my side of the street, my eyes watching the brilliant moon up in the sky. I glanced back at my hideous form. Now she would truely see me. For what I was.
She came trotting over just as before, her expression still as curious and as sweet.
"Hello again." She said with a small nod of her head.
"H-Hello." God, my voice sounded so strange. She probably thought I was a freak.
"Why do you hide from me still?"
She asked, tilting her head.
"-I'm- A- Freak-" I said looking down, I couldn't face such perfection.
"Freak? You are so far from that. You are perfect." She said with a smile.
I now tilted my head, not quite sure if I had heard her right. Perfect? Was that even possible? Me? Skin and bones....neglected beast was what I was.
"May I join you over there?" she asked perking forward her ears.
Did she really just ask that? She wanted to come over here? Was I dreaming?
"Sure." I said at an utter loss for words. She nodded, backing up some and looking at the fence that contained her. She ran at the fence, jumping gracefully over and landing in the street.
She was so beautiful, I couldn't think strait. My senses dulled as I watched her approach. But in my daze I missed the killer. And I was too late.
The next day, at dawn, I was still standing there, like stone in my spot. Her beautiful form lay dead on the street. I was still numb to the fact she was dead. I still couldn't comprehend...I looked away, a stray tear escaping my eyes of blood, I had never cried before....but I guess it was love that compelled me so.
The one light of my world was crushed in the night. And now I was alone once more, glancing over at those rolling green pastures, wondering if she'd ever come back and join me in the depths of the dark, and gaze at me from across the street. Like we did.
