My dog just knows-

Her name (comes when called)
NO (stops what she's doing)
Down
Sit
Beg (hops up on hind legs to touch your hand with her nose.)
Stay (iffy on this one..hates being left)
Hop up (she will climb into a car, onto furniture, whatever.)

She is a very calm, smart dog who learns very quickly. I have never found anything to be necessary beyond these few commands and she often listens to things I tell her even when I have never trained her to do it.

My horse knows the meaning of walk, trot, canter, gallop, ho, and stop. He can rear on command, knows "come here" and his name, and if I say, AGAIN, AGAIN, he will speed up toward a jump a second time. He's very smart and pretty well behaved under saddle. If I scold him and tell him, "You're not two, don't act like an idiot!" he often stops acting like an idiot.

That aside most of my animals don't know many tricks, except to come when they are called for some of them.

Horses and probably dogs usually learn and interpret by tone, not the actual word. So ho to slow down/stop makes sense as far as it sounds.

I think that some of what the horse knows he learned by tone. Some of it I trained him to do. Rearing has no verbal cue, I use my reins and legs and position instead.

My dog slipped out a few days ago, and when an old woman tried to pick her up, she bit her. It didn't hurt.. but Scooby's a sweet little thing. Is it because she's on heat?

Uh, there could be many reasons why your dog did this, but she may have been near some other male dogs, or something.... Or, maybe she was scared, and did not mean to hurt the poor lady? xD

Just throwing out suggestions.

She's been barking alot lately, or 'semi-barking'; making tiny barking noises but not opening her mouth. Like right now XD

Dogs do become "grumpier" when in heat. How'd she get out? A dog in heat running loose is quite concerning. But yes, dogs become more defensive, territorialish when in heat, often two females in heat will go at it. (fight) And well heats are just a pain in the butt xD

I think she slipped out when I took the rubbish out. She's a really good dog when it comes to slipping out, though.

I was staying at grandma's and my mum began the 20-minute drive to pick me up. We then drove the 20 minutes back home, and stopped on the way to do some shopping. So, about an hour and a half - 2 hours was spent during all of that. When we went home, Scooby was sitting in the driveway (gates were open, mind you). We almost ran her over and she was panting. A lot. It turns out she slipped out and wanted to go for a walk so much she trotted up and down out street for a bit and sat in our driveway until we came home.
