Run.
That was the first thing I thought when the kronador appeared. He had seemed to come almost out of nowhere, either that or I was too deep in thought. I was just strolling along minding my own business, and he just appeared.
But I shouldn't just start you off in the middle of a story. Let me tell you how I got in this mess.
--------------------------------------------
It was a beautiful night, the stars shone brightly. The white waters of a nearby stream sang a song I couldn't understand. The night was peaceful.
Until he decided to join me.
It was my older brother, Syrin. He was the first to come out. I was the last. You can already see the relationship we had. He walked up to me grinning. He was always such a "good boy"...around my mother that is. My mother would always say thing to me like "Oh Kiran, you really should be much more like Syrin." or "Kiran, why don't you go play with Syrin." . It really annoyed me. I mean, it's not like I hated my brother it's just that him being my mom's favorite really got annoying after a while. Sure, he was stronger, braver, faster, larger, and a better hunter than I was, but you don't need to brag about it.
Anyway, he walked up to me. He had his usually smug grin on his face. The grin he would wear when was planning to do something to me. He looked at me and his grin grew even wider. I frowned. He said rather loudly "HI BROTHER!" and shoved all of his body weight onto my side. I fell over and yelped in pain. Syrin just sneered. "Gotcha." he said to me. "Yeah, yeah yeah, just get off of me, now." I wiggled out from underneath him and shook the dirt off of my fur. He got up and waited a second before saying "Sooo...how're things going? Whatcha doing?"
Now as mean as my brother can be, he did have a nice side. He cared for others, but still made sure they knew who was boss, which was obviously him.
"Oh nothing," I replied, "just out here looking around."
"Oh okay." he said back. "well...I guess I'll leave you to your 'looking around'. See ya later." And he trotted off into the mist.
Yep, that's Syrin. Plays a trick on you then disappears.
Pushing what just happened out of my mind, I semi limped off. I wasn't really "looking around", I was hunting. A social order had been established in our family, and I was at the bottom. So while my brothers and sisters feasted, was forced to wait for them to finish. And when they actually did finish, there was hardly anything left. So, in order to survive, I went out hunting for myself. I usually didn't catch much. Often a rabbit or a fish or such. I didn't have the huntig skills Syrin had.
But there was one thing that I did have that he didn't. That was intelligence. A mind that processes and thinks about stuff. While syrin just tailgated the deer, I'd take a different path and catch up to it. The deer would stop in it's tracks when it saw me appear out of nowhere, then Syrin and the rest of the family would go in for the kill. But of course I never got any credit for it.
Rustle Rustle
I heard a noise behind me. A rabbit? I thought. I cautiously turned around and carefully stalked over towards the noise. Maybe if I could just use the element of surprise...
WHOOSH!
A large hare dashed out of the bush and sprinted past me. I quickly turned around and chased right after it. The hare wasn't so fast. He seemed to have an injured front paw. Even better I thought with glee. I was now running at full speed and I was almost at the hare now. Closer, closer, my dear dinner. I was just about to pounce when the hare made a sudden sharp right turn...and what I saw in front of me struck me like a blow to the head.
It was a cliff. And a rather large one at that, too. It is what our family had called "Death's Drop" and our mother had been clear to advise that we stay as far away from it as possible.
Well, I was probably a little to concentrated on dinner, I completely forgot about it.
I tried to stop, my claws digging into the ground. Skidded a few feet, then started to slow down.
No, no, no...It can end here... I thought desperately as I continued to skid towards the cliff.
Closer and closer i got to the cliff...I was going to die...I could see the ragging white waters below...
Then I stopped.
Just like that. About to inches from the very edge, I stopped.
I sat there, puzzled, wondering what had happened, then I hit me that I was alive. I wasn't falling to a watery death, I was alive.
I let out a heavy sigh of relief and let all of my weight fall onto the ground...
CR-R-R-RACK!
My heart started pounding. I looked behind and saw a large crack in the ground quickly forming a foot behind me. I froze in shock. Two seconds later, the ground fell from beneath me. I tried to leap to safe ground, but, alas, I failed. I fell down, I could see the river rapidly getting larger and larger as I plummeted to my death.
SPLASH!
I crashed into the waters below. Water filled my nostrils. I struggled for air. I reached the surface, only to grasp a small breath of air before the rapids pushed me back under. I fought the current, trying to keep it from pushing me too far down. I burst to the surface and managed to stay up there to catch my breath. The current grew strangely calm all of a sudden and I sat there floating. I was filled with relief. Maybe I would survive this after all...
Then I heard it. A faint roaring sound, seeming to grow louder as a swam with the current. It then got so loud that I turned around and looked downstream. What lie ahead took all my hope for surviving and crushed it.
It was a huge waterfall.
I turned around and tried paddling upstream. It didn't help. The force of the current was to strong. The edge grew increasingly near until-
I plunged over the edge. It looked like a good 100 feet 'til I would reach the bottom. I was certain I was going to die. Faster and faster I plummeted down...
KER-SPLASH!!!
The water slapped me. Pain shocked my body and I couldn't move for a few seconds. When I could, I painfully paddled up to the surface. I broke into air and gasped fr life. My whole body was in pain and it hurt to even breathe. I let the current carry me as I slid into unconsciousness...
--------------------------------------------
I woke up on the river shore. My body was in pain, and I tried to get up, but collapsed instead. I let out a heavy sigh. It hurt to breathe, and I was wheezing. My whole body ached, there was blood coming down the side of my face, and I had a terrible headache. I once more tried to get up, but yet again failed. I could hear water swishing around in my ears. I sneezed. I think I saw blood come out, I'm not sure. My eyesight was blurry, and my nose was stuffed. I tried to look around, analyze my surroundings. There was what looked like an old tree to my left, and large boulders to my right. The sun was just coming up. I wondered how long I had been unconscious...
I thought about that for a moment then decided to check myself out. My left hind leg ached terribly and the right one seemed fine. My arms and legs were sore from paddling. I think I banged my head on something while I was unconscious in the river.
Enough about my body, I need to see if I can find a way back home. I got up successfully and limped off to find some food or something. Maybe if I just found an abandoned den I could rest...
I was in luck. I happened to spot an empty den. I crawled inside and fell asleep right away...
-----{( Dream )}-----
Kiran woke up in a strange place. He looked around not knowing where the heck he was. He wandered around, trying to understand where he was. He came across a pool of water. It seemed to glow and beckoned Kiran towards it. Kiran walked towards it cautiously. He stared into his reflection. His face was perfect, not a flaw in sight. He took a drink from the pool, and found that it was sweet and refreshing. Kiran drank his fill and trotted off. He went around the corner and saw a freshly killed deer lying on the ground. He carefully walked up to it and looked around to see if there were any others around that might have killed this deer. He smelled no one, so it looked at the carcass again. He sniffed it and it smelled delicious, so he dug in. Once he had stuffed himself, he trotted off into the woods. He had only been walking for a few moments when he was struck with pain. It felt that something was tearing him apart from the inside. Kiran screamed and whined in pain and agony. He felt like everything inside of him was being destroyed. The forest around him grew dim and unfriendly. Kiran felt as if he was going to explode!
Then a light appeared. It took form of a wolf like him, its body was white and its eyes where glowing. It looked and him. It took pity on Kiran and walked towards him. It then touched him on the forehead with its nose. All the pain stopped. Kiran was amazed. He got up, shook himself and then asked the white wolf where he was. It just looked at him, then pointed its nose to the north star, then looked back a Kiran. It then looked Kiran stait in the eyes and said "Wake up" Kiran was confused. He was already awake. The white wolf continued, "Wake up, dear Kiran. Wake up from your slumber. Wake up and find your way. Wake up...wake up...wake up" and it began to fade away. Kiran yelled for it to stay, he was confused. The wolf was starting to disappear, and it continued whispering wake up. It finally disappeared. Kiran stood for a moment, alone in these unknown woods. Then a bright light suddenly exploded from where the white wolf had last been and Kiran was blinded.
--------------------------------------------
I woke up. Someone was saying "wake up!" over and over again. I opened my eyes. It was a little blurry but I made out a brown wolf shape. It was a female. She's saw that my eyes were open and said "Finally you're awake! I thought you were dead!" I just shook my head and said "where am I?"
"Why, you're in my den, silly." she replied.
After hearing that I got up and apologized, and headed on my way. She stopped me. "Where are you going?" she asked. "Oh...uh...nowhere I guess." I replied. "You look horrible," she said. "why don't you just stay here? I wouldn't mind."
I was bewildered by her offer. After intruding her den, she'd let me stay. I accepted the offer and asked her what her name was. "My name is Nhuki." she replied. "What is yours?"
"I'm Kiran."
"And what are you doing out here all alone Kiran?"
"Well..." and I explained to her what had happened since she woke me up. I didn't tell her about the dream though. I wanted to think that matter over before I told some one...
"And why are you out here?" I asked her when I was done.
"Well...um...my mate, Ignis,...he uhh...got killed by a kronador." She said quietly. "All of my pups are grown up, and I have no one to be with. So now I'm just living out here on my own.
I felt empathy for her. "Well I guess I could stay here for a little while and keep you company."
"Really?" She said, looking into my eyes. "How sweet of you."
"So, Nhuki, I'm a kinda hungry. Can we go hunting?"
"Oh, yes, certainly." I followed her into the woods.
Even though we were hunting, my thoughts were elsewhere. Questions raced through my mind I an angry bee.
How is my family doing without me? Have they even noticed I'm gone? Who's Syrin going to pick on? How will they do on hunting? What was that dream about? What was that white wolf talking about? I was so deep in thought I didn't even hear the noise behind me.
Rustle Rustle
I was still thinking when he appeared. The Kronador. But Nhuki noticed. "Kiran! Look out!"
I spun around and saw the giant Kronador. I had only seen these creatures in stories my mother would tell us, but I never saw one in real life. Run was my first instinct but for some reason I didn't
Nhuki threw herself at the Kronador and barked "This is for Ignis!"
Her blow was not effective. She managed to bite the Kronador, but he shook her off and threw her to the ground.
NO! I thought desperately. The Kronador didn't seem interested in her more that he was in me. I stared right through me, his lime green eyes making all else seem dim. I could either run and abandon Nhuki, who wasn't moving, but whimpering softly, or stay and take on the Kronador. My fighting skins were not that great so fighting him wasn't very wise, and I couldn't bear leaving a friend behind. So I looked around.
Then an Idea struck me.
I just stood in place.
"Come and get me" I said to the Kronador.
He grinned and charged
I waited
He got closer still
Wait for it... I thought
When he was about 5 feet away, I dove to the right and he charged right past me. Before he knew what was happening, BANG! he crashed into a large tree. He then lay unconscious against the tree trunk.
I chuckled, then ran over to Nhuki.
She laid there, whimpering ever so softly. "Nhuki! Are you okay!?!?" She looked at me weakly, I could tell she was fading fast.
"Nhuki! Come Nhuki, stay with me! Nhuki! Nhuki don't die! Please Nhuki! Nhuki" I barked. She just looked at me, closed her eyes, and sighed.
I couldn't let this happen. It was my fault she lay here dying. If I hadn't of survived that river, I would have been dead, and she would have been back at her den, safe and sound. I hadn't have even known her for that long. Yet she was such a kind hearted creature.
I tried getting Nhuki to open her eyes again, she did, then closed them again.
I took one look at her then let out a long mournful howl...
--------------------------------------------
I stayed by Nhuki's side all night. I could hear a faint heartbeat every now and then, and her breathing was raspy. She wasn't dead yet, but she was in pain, and probably unconscious. In the morning, her condition was the same, so I gradually left her to get some food.
While I was out hunting, questions raced through my head. How is my family doing? Will Nhuki be ok? Where will I go? How long has it been since I left? The last one was easy. It seems like it has been two days since I fell off the cliff.
Then something tickled my nose. A sent....a squirrel scent...A nearby squirrel scent. I froze. Squirrels were tricky to catch. With so many trees around, he could easily escape. Maybe if I could corner him...
Then the scent was gone. The squirrel must have smelled my scent and ran off. Dang it! I thought. I went back to Nhuki.
When I got there, she was in the same state and condition. I tried to lick her face, trying to wake he up, but it didn't work.
Another night I spent by Nhuki, and her condition got even worse. I wasn't even sure if she was alive anymore. After another day, I concluded that she was dead. No heartbeat could be heard, no breathing.I took a long look at her then trotted off, painfully leaving her behind.
