I care for/train my grandparents dog. He's a 3 year old liver Lab, a real sweetheart. The only issue is he's deaf. He knows sit, lie down, stay, heel, come, walks great on a lease both on foot and on a bike, and loves our homemade agility courses. Also loves fetching stuff, especially from the water. Since he has trouble locating where I've thrown things, he knows to look at me and then run off to where I point. He'll fetch his leash this way too. I walk him to the gate so he knows we're going out, and then I'll point to the shed and he'll run off and bring his leash. :P His name is Pedro haha.

Re: Having a hard time training?Or just want to know new tri

My dogs are really protective of me, and I think they have pretty poor sight. Like, can't see cleary past 20 feet. Anywho, we cannot have anyone or anything near them and us without them going berserk and trying to attack someone. We've spent $700 on Bark Busters, $200+ Petsmart and God knows what all, but they're not ever people or animal friendly. They don't like toys and since my parents work a lot, we can't take them for walks too often.

We've been socializing them since we took them home -- literally two days after we took them home (they were the age when puppies are allowed and old enough to be adopted out to their new families), they were put in a group of like, twenty kids, but they act like maniacs. The dogs I am talking about are twin mini Schanuzers, boy and girl. They are five now.

We want to adopt some more animals and have friends over and take them outside and let them socialize, but they attack and just don't stop barking. Any tips?

I've told people Sausage dogs are really loyal and protective and they are aggressive because of that, but no-one believes me. The person I got my Mini Foxy, Scooby, from used to be a postie and told us, because she met lots of dogs while delivering her letters.

Meh... This is always a hard one to fix, because they are so bonded to you...

Make sure to give them there exersize, feed them the right amounts, and try to intrest them in the toys, every day for a couple days maybe take a squeeky toy, or a bone, and squeek it, or show the bone to the dog. If it does nothing, try to get them interested in the toy, throw it, show it to them, squeek it, etc. Whatever you can do to intrest them in the toy.

If your dogs like treats, thats always a good way to socialize... Ever let them just run around or sniff a dog through the fence? Or are you afraid they will try to atack it, or it will atack?

I may need some time to think of some more tips... xD This is always a hard one for me.

That's not something you can fix over the internet, sounds more like you need a behaviorist. (And I can connect you to one close to you) Bark collars are worthless and the only thing they do is make the association worse. You shouldn't be focused on stopping the behavior, you should be focused on changing their emotional response. Find a treat they really like, get a clicker, every time they glance at a person "click" and treat them. So they begin to associate the presence of people with good things. Then when they're comfortable around people (but with the people ignoring them) click and treat them for going up to them and sniffing. If they get touched, click and treat. And having strangers give them treats won't help, as they are just ignoring fight or flight instincts for food and as soon as the food is gone they'll become unsure about the situation again. Make sense? Probably not as it's definitely something that needs to be seen done and explained in person with help.
I have a dog who would bark and growl at strangers out of fear, he can now walk through events without panicking and will go up and press himself up again some people and look back at me waiting for a treat. Which yeah he's looking at me, but he's comfortable and that's the main thing. Never force them into something, they have to do when they're ready.
I also have a dog who used to want to kill other dogs on sight, yet she's now laying down with a Toy Poodle and Miniature Dachshund. ;)

Edit: Also a crate and a Kong filled with frozen peanut butter is a good bet when you have guests. :D

Also, Schnauzers aren't sausage dogs. I don't know where you got that from... (if that was what you were inferring). They look like this:

As I mentioned previously, due to work, they can only do much as run around in our property. I wish I could walk them, but my parents have to come with me because they're afraid I will be kidnapped or something; and they don't ever get the chance. They eat less than the dog food recommends (they have "organic" specialty food, that might be it). Toys... they only like soft toy balls. we have about three, and they ocasionally touch regular dog toys. But we've wasted so much money on dog toys, and they only have the desire to play with them about once a month. Really, it's sad.

I've had stray dogs run into our yard; they nip and bark and "screech". If a dog or anything moving is near our property, they will bark and run around like maniacs. I don't mind other dogs, but mine will lunge and nip; they have done that since they were young. They just have never been dog friendly, even since they were little. Even squirrels. If they see one, oh my God, they go INSANE. Holy, it's a nightmare!

Yes, they are very attached. They always sleep in my room/on my bed, only go certain places if I go first, come to me first to cuddle after I come back from classes, etc. Although I do understand, I don't like the fact that their training is basically my responsibilty now. If they bark for more than a few seconds and I don't correct them, I get "attacked". Same deal with lunging, etc. :silent:

I know where you are coming from; we have spent over $1000 and nothing has worked. We could always try Petsmart again, or Petco.... Anywho, clickers are insignificant, and so are most "correctional" techniques; my brother decided to click the clicker into oblivion one day; the clicker means nothing to them anymore, unfortunately. My mother is convinced giving strangers to hand them treats and using bark collars is the trick, though. I don't have much of a say after that.

As for guests, the guests we take let them see are fine, but they bark because they have a five year old (we take precautions, don't worry) and my other family members get fed up and send them back upstairs. We did the crate and Kong deal when they were puppies, but it makes them worse and the male has a choking problem. He has choked fom eating and barking at the same time.

I feel like I have been writing to ignore you guys or say your techniques are ineffective or whatever you take it as, but in all honesty this advice has been so helpful. I will try the "postman" technique that Celestial has talked about, and that I have seen on TV by Victoria Stillwell. Thank you all!

But if I may ask for more help; my female always chases prey, because she was bred for it, but we love cats and want to adopt another one and we want the cat to at least ocassionally interact with them. I think the boy dog would be fine, but the girl goes insane. We would also like to rescue a dog, possibly a puppy if my dogs ever get "treated". Is there another way to keep the girl from possibly attacking the new dog?

Sometimes it's hard to tell, my German Shepherd mix has prey drive out the wazoo, we do lure sports, and whenever he sees a cat he will go nuts. I can get him under control easily, but he still is reactive to them. Yet he lived with 3 at one point, and I took him to a friend's house who has 6 cats and he did okay. It's just when they run he gets excited.

I would look into fostering a puppy through a rescue or shelter that you might be interested in and I'd keep barriers in between the puppy and your dogs. When you first allow your current dog to see the puppy's presence, do the click for looking thing and reward all the good interactions. If she freaks out just take her away and let her cool down. If she's doing good you can leave the pup behind the barrier and just go on with your day. (remember both dogs will need interaction.)

Or you could do a few sessions of this.
