Chapter Four~
As I made my way back to the river, I pondered what the stranger, Dhiren, had said to me.
Could it have even happened? I wondered, pushing a brantch heavy with blueberries out of path. Could it have been a dream? Thinking back, it couldn't have been a dream. I decided I believed the strange tale. A sudden though occured to me, and I stopped in my tracks. How would I exlpain my strange disappearance to Velious and Tweed? I dwelled on that for a while.
~~~
It didn't take me long to find my way back to the river. It was still early dawn, so I hoped Tweed and Velious were still here. As soon as I coulde hear the river, I stopped and held my breath until my face burned bright red. Satisfied, I began running as fast as I could, bursting out of the brush and tripped over a bundle of cloth. The bundle sat up and exclaimed, "Zarya!"
I rolled over and sat up, too.
"I finally found you!" I exclaimed breathlessly. "I was kidnapped by... weird animal... that made prints... unconsious..."
I stopped and gasped for air every few words, trying to make it sound like I had run the entire way here. It wasn't hard.
"Hold on." Tweed grabbed my shoulders. "Take a few breaths and then tell us what happened."
I sighed deeply and began to recite my story.
I told them how an animal had kidnapped me, and I knocked me head, unconsious. I explained how I woke up a while later to find I was lost deep in the forest, and how I heard strange noises in the brush.
How I began running, but was chased, but suddenly lost my pursuer only a while back.
“I don’t know, Zarya. I’ve never heard of anything like it.” Velious said.
I realized this was the most intelligent thing I’d ever head him say, but I ignored that.
“You saw me yourself, Velious. The thing took me. I heard you yelling for me.”
Finally, they relented, and we agreed to not tell anyone. It would be to much.
After a final glance around, we began the journey home.
~~~
A few hours late, we came in sigh of the village. I glance at Velious and Tweed. I hadn’t said anything on the way back, and neither had they. I was worrying me. First off, Velious for one never shut up. Second, We three had known each other since we could walk and talk. I was worried they were suspicious of my lie.
As we neared the village, they broke away from me and walked fasted, Tweed forged ahead, but Velious stopped and turned to me.
“’Bye, Zarya,” he mumbled, turning and running after his brother.
I watched him run off until I couldn’t see him anymore. With a deep sigh, I trudged home.
~~~
My house is small, cold, and empty. In the winter snow, it was freezing. In the summer heat, it was a little oven. I didn’t mind. I’d lived here for my entire life, it was completely normal for me.
My only possessions were my dagger, a sewing needle, a bed, and a lonely nightstand. The villagers really didn’t give me anything else, unless it was food.
I opened the door and slid into the one-room house. I sighed and plopped onto the dusty ground, casting a sideways glance at it. I really had nothing to do most of the time, so I would sit on the floor and write.
I looked at what had recently been written on my floor. Most of it was patted out, so it didn’t make much sense.
The lonely… wanders… sea of clouds…
I read it over again, then swept my hand over the meaningless poetry.
Pulling my dagger out of it's sheath, I gently held the to flat sides inbetween my fingers like a stylus. I pressed the tip againts the ground and began to write.
The emotions lost in the turmoil of the sea, swallod by the giant whale blue.
I made a face, and again wiped out the words. I began to write again.
The lies of others may be truths, but the truths of others are never lies.
For some reason, that line made me very angry. I stood up and began swipping the words away with my feet.
I sighed, mad that I had let my emotions get the better of me, and slid back to the floor on my stomach. I began writing again, but soon the words became angrey scribbles. Crawling around, I wanted every inch of the dusty floor to be covered. I stood up and slowly walked around the edge of the room, staring at the scribbles.
Something suddenly caught my eye, in the upper right-handed corner of the room, next to my bed.
G.
I squinted, and continued.
Green.
Ey, eyed, green eyed.
Wol... wolf.
Green eyed wolf.
Scrawled in very messy handwriting.
On the floor.
I blinked and hurriedly wiped the floor clean, then collapsed on the bed.
I must be going crazy.
~~~
Hours later, I was still curled up on the bed. I rubbed my eyes and rolled off the bed, grasping for my dagger again.
I closed my eyes and began scribbling again, only on a very much smaller scale. I dropped the dagger back down and opened at what I had written.
This time, it was only meaningless scribbles. I blinked and slowly began to erase them. A knock at the door made me jump up and hastily erase the rest.
Rushing to the door, I wondered who it could be.
I opened the door and was surprised to see Darian standing there, a grin plastered to his fac. I reflected how long it has seemed since I had last seen him.
Opening the door wider, I asked, "What are you doing here?"
He grinned. "You remember the Hunters, don't you?"
I nodded. It was an easy question.
"I'm going to join them!" He burst out.
I knew enough about the Hunters to be excited for him. They are and elite group who scour the land for animals who are causeing trouble to our village. In recent times, that trouble has just been a rouge group of dogs. Of course, the Hunters also bring us food, too. It was considered an honor to be invited to join them.
Suddenly, a though strick me that almost made me fall.
"What did you just say?" I asked slowly, quietly.
Unaware of my change in mood, Darian answered, "I said, my first mission is to track down a rogue wolf hanging around the village. He steals our food and and is attracting other wolves." He began blabbering one once more.
I sat down on the edge of my bed, dumbstruck.
But that means-
Dhiren-
"What time is it?" I asked him quickly.
He frowned. "When I came? Sundown. Hey, sorry, Zarya, but I need to go." He got up and left. I bairly knew he was gone.
I grabbed my dagger, running out of the door and into the wasteland.
Because I knew exactly who that rogue wolf was.
