Looking back, I’m not sure I should have ever let myself fall for her. But who am I kidding? Like I ever had a choice?
I always fall for people who don’t love me back…
Anyone interested in more?

The evening had closed in quickly; the darkness within the forest was more absolute than Margaret had ever imagined darkness could be. She shivered from nerves and the dampness of her dress, the wet hem now slowly creeping up the length of her legs. She felt Williams hand reach out and gingerly touch at her arm.
"Allow me to walk you back home, Margaret. I know these forests well...I pledge to return you to your dwelling safely."
Margaret gave him a soft smile, her eyes slowly traveling down to his deeply gashed leg that now sported a small portion of her dress wrapped around it. "I could never ask you such a thing, you're injured. You need to stay and rest."
William ran a hand nervously through his short frock of fawn hair as his smile shifted into a sheepish grin. "I shall be fine, truly. I cannot allow my savior to walk home unattended in the dark, please, allow me the honor."
Margaret looked back across the stream in the direction she had come from. She could see no candles in the bower windows, not even a single flicker or glimmer. Wringing her hands nervously she finally gave in. "...Yes, dear William, you may accompany me home. I'm afraid I've forgotten the way."
His smile returning full strength, William gave a light bow and offered his hand to her in the most gentlemanly fashion. "Please, my dear lady, allow me to carry you home."
Margaret moved to shield his hand away--no man needed to hobble around on one leg as well as try to carry her. But William instead was surrounded by the same strange glow that left the tawny stag bowing before her with brilliant green eyes looking up at her hopefully. Raising back up he walked over to her, minding the placement of his antlers very carefully, and slide his neck underneath of her to slide her onto his back. Margaret gasped as he wobbled for a moment, sure that they would both end up in the stream, but he adjusted to the missing use of one limb and the new weight quickly and began walking. Margaret was amazed by how little sound he made even as he crossed back over the water--leaves barely crinkled underneath his hooves.
He made a muffled, strangled sound for a moment until Margaret realized her arms were gripped tightly around his neck. "Oh! William, I'm so sorry!" She gasped, leaning back and trying to relax herself and enjoy the rather unorthodox escort home. She could almost swear there was a smile of acceptance on the stag's face and she found herself smiling.

As the approached the courtyard gates, William stopped and lowered himself back into a bow to allow Margaret an easier dismount. Once she was safely on the ground the same soft light shone around him and the man was once again at her side. "As promised, one lovely lady deposited safely back home." He whispered. Margaret turned to him. "I never doubted your intentions, dear William. You seem an honest man."
His hand snaked up to lightly massage the back of his head again. "Well...parting truly is sweet sorrow..." He said with a forced laugh. He looked at her, measuring how she might react, before finally reaching out to take her hands in his. "I...I have never met such a kind soul as you, Margaret. I would...I would love to see you again someday. Until then...might I be so bold as to ask you the favor of a parting kiss to remember you by?"
She could see his head flinch to the side, fully expecting to be smacked. Instead he eyes lit up as her hand rested lightly on the side of his face. "You may be so bold, William..."

In her room within the bower, Margaret found that she could not sleep. Visions of the shapeshifter ran through her mind, a smile was etched on her face so wide and deep that she thought it might never disappear. She raised a hand to touch her fingertips lightly against her lips and closed her eyes to remember the brief kiss they had shared.
"Oh my William...what spell have you cast over a such a simple girl as me..." She whispered as she gazed out to the moon and treetops beyond her window.
