Dear SJ,
I waited a long time for Shay to come back. In the meantime, I played little games that I made up.
One of the games was called "Stare at the ceiling and count the squares on it." Sounds fun, huh? No, not really. And that game is called "Answer my own questions."
Suddenly the steel doors swung open, and in stepped Nathan and Shay.
"Wow," Nathan said, walking over to the table I was on. "She's really..."
"What? What do you mean?" I struggled against the straps keeping me there on that cold table.
Shay rested a paw on my shoulder. I blushed so badly I almost had a heat stroke. Wait... was I attracted to Shay? Oh dog... NO!
"Shay," said Nathan, turning toward his ally. "Kindly explain." I thought I saw a smug grin on Nathan's face.
Shay leaned against the table and sighed heavily. "You are... One of us."
"Uh, what?"
Nathan growled, "Lux, you aren't an Elite. You're one of us gang dogs."
I couldn't take it all in. How? What? Why? I didn't get it.
"I don't understand," I said. "What do you mean?"
"He means exactly what he just said," Shay answered. "Ever since we were pups, this organization has been watching us. The Elites are not what you think, Lux. They're the real evil ones in this picture, not us."
I didn't really like the way he said "us." It almost had a passionate ring to it.
"No, you're lying!" I snarled, writhing madly as I tried to free myself.
"She's too smart. Kill her, Shay!" Nathan barked.
Shay pulled a syringe out of his labcoat. It had a mysterious clear fluid in it. I knew what it was, though. I'd seen this way too much on TV. It was the stuff they give criminals for the death penalty.
"NO!" I yelled, tears pricking my eyes.
And then it all happened so fast I needed a few moments to register it.
The syringe fell to the floor and the straps around my waist and legs loosened and fell limp at the side of the table. Shay picked me up and slung me over his shoulder.
Then he started running.
All the way until we reached the outside of the warehouse and got down the street several blocks.
Boy, did we make a spectacle of ourselves.
Shay put me down and tore off his labcoat.
I had to turn away to keep from blushing harder. But wait... we have fur. Nevermind! Still...
When I was sure it was okay to look, I turned around and collapsed in the grass. We were in the front lawn of some shabby old house that appeared vacant.
"Get out of Nox City. Heck, get out of this country. If those gang losers find you, you won't stand a chance; fighting skills or not." Shay's steady voice cut through the night air like a knife.
"I... I..." I stammered, trying to find the right words.
"Right," he said, helping me up. "You'll need someone to guide you."
"And you would do that?" I asked.
"Yeah," said Shay. "I don't know who would want to harm someone like you..."
He gazed intensely into my eyes.
Uhhh...
Later, SJ...
