and, no, I don't always have newspaper in there. it was just for 'play time'.

They are so adorable <3. I love, Simeon, I believe? The small one all the way to the right. ^^;. I used Newspaper to put on their bottom, and I would spread it out on top of their normal bedding for them to play with. Along with toilet paper rolls o.e.

And I still need to find the pictures of my ratties and upload them, I swear I had a video or a couple of pictures of bathtime with the rats, [ as in the rats taking a bath... ] but I think it might have been lost with the old comp. t.t

.. Is it safe to just use newspaper? ^^'

It'd make their usual bedding last a lot longer if I added that in, that's for sure lol.

They made a nest with the newspaper I gave them - underneath their log and rock where Simeon hides haha.

and, Simeon has a dot on her butt.. o-O I've noticed as she get's older the bigger it get's. I need to get pictures of that haha, it's so cute.

Alpha, first and foremost make sure you can get to the vet at the drop of a hat.

And, yes, newspaper in the US is safe since they use soy based ink. I use it ad know others who do and have no problems at all.

MoonfallTheFox wrote:That doesn't mean you need to make more rats. Check craigslist, I bet there are rats there who need homes. There are other ways to rescue, they just take more effort.

I have a rat from a neglect home. She belonged to a friend of a friend. My friend asked me to take her because the owner accepted she could not provide proper care. Rosebud was living in a tiny tank, all by herself, eating puppy food. She was depressed and very clingy. I had her spayed, and intro'd her to the boys, and she's now a very outgoing, if a bit obnoxious, doe.

Yes, it takes effort. Rescuing from the source costs a lot in time and money, where a rescue group will do some of the hard work for you. But, if you care about rats, "free" craigslist rats and things should be your first priority or they will become snake food.

There will ALWAYS be rats who are in need of homes. Rather than making more, take those who need homes into yours and give them love and family.

And yes, I could have bred my sweet, sweet Romeo to Rosebud. But, I didn't, because there is NO need to breed. I love Romeo. He has no health issues, he's very healthy and with a very good immune system. Always last to fall ill and he's been to the vet very few times, once for an abscess in his genitals that needed a minor incision to drain how I wanted, and once for a minor surgury to remove a cyst that was growing quickly, and too close to his genitals for my taste. He's had meds for URIs that his cage mates have had, but never been badly afflicted himself.

I would -love- to have his pups. But there's no reason to have them. I could save lives with the space and time and money it would take me to breed a litter from him.

I agree 100% with all of this.

Aww! Your ratties are beautiful. The little one(Simeon?) is just the cutest little thing. :3

I have a question concerning where to put a cage. My parents said if I ever got a rat the rats would have to be in my room. The thing is, my room can get hot and really cold at times. Could this do anything bad to the ratties?

Just popping in to share photographs of my girls - Blue, Brie and Bel :)

Brie fishing for peas
Blue and Bel fishing for peas
Blue in her cage
Brie's face
Bel's face
Blue standing on front paws
And Brie standing on back paws : )
Bel sticking her nose out
Grand adventure to the doorhandle
Brie walking too fast for the camera (dem feet!)

Just wondering, does Brie look too skinny? We give them all plenty of food, but she's smaller than the other two.

Brie looks okay to me. Her eyes are bright; her pelt looks sleek; nose is clean. She's probably just smaller than the others.
