Rarity. My snake is 10.5 inches long. She cannot even IMAGINE eating an adult mouse with her tiny mouth, and adult mice who have been used for breeding or who are old are very fatty and not healthy for our snakes.
Animals will always have to eat, and with some animals, other things must die to feed them. It is the way of life, in fact, rats are killers as well and will kill to eat. I have seen mine try. My mice, too, will eat any meat given to them (red meat isn't healthy though) and enjoy insects and grubs in particular. The only thing we as humns can do is make sure that the animals who die to feed our pets live as good of a life as they can, no matter how short it is, and die without pain. There cannot be life without death. My snake would starve without the sacrifice of baby mice. I love mice, and it saddens me that she must eat them, but I love her, too. In order to be as good to both species as possible, I feed F/T food to my snake. I also have pet mice and they will never be eaten. I never meet the babies I buy before they die, but -all- of them have milk bands, the brand of a full belly. They were not hungry when they lived. That is the best I can do as a lover of ALL animal species. It is as humane as death can be.
I do not agree with live feeding, in fact I abhor it. But snakes and other animals have to eat. Would you prefer they all starve to death, dying slowly, while owners languish over them? I would be shattered if my little one died. She is only a young snake, in her first year of life and growing rapidly. Just like dogs and cats eat chicken, or like my chickens eat bugs, death is a part of the cycle nessecary for all life. People who care for life, and have to sacrifice life to do so, are not any more soulless than anyone else. My 26 pets are my life, they get the best care I can give them, they have a home, they have love, they have friends and toys and good food. It takes a soul, if you believe they exist, to shelter animals in need, to save the helpless or put the doomed out of thier misery quickly and without pain. The rescue work I do brings a lot of heartache for me, because no matter what animals do die sometimes. More often than not they survive, I actually just took in a little frog last night who's doing marvelously.
But he, too, must kill to eat. I sacrifice crickets to him to help him heal and grow strong.
Painted pony, I'm sorry. He was very old and you gave him a peaceful passing. RIP little guy.
