Good! Hopefully they will be fine... They dont sound like they are in Pain! I'm about to get pictures of all my darlings and post them up. I wont be able to get a phot of Molly as she is at the vets getting a checkup and or Stryker as he is really sick at the moment and is at the Vet also. I will get as many good photos as i can manage.

PaintmyPony, when did he start acting like that? Has it come on all of a sudden?
If so it could be a stroke. A steroid injection could benifet him. They can recover from strokes.
Or if it's his breathing, again steroid would help, as well as antibiotics (by injection then a course of them at home).
You will have to keep him warm (but not too warm, I once left one of my boys on the heatpad for less than 2 minutes while I went to get something and he was way too hot when I got back, if he can't move, don't leave him on it, it's better holding him close to you instead really). Keep him hydrated if you can and offer him softer/runny foods.... baby food, ice cream, custard, or heat some milk and mix a biscuit in until it's liquid. Poor baby.[/quote]




He started going downhill on Monday (His mate died a few weeks ago after having fits/strokes/hind leg deteriation) they have been on baby rice mix / cream rice and avacado and other mushy stuff (even poarage and weatbix) for months (they refuse to eat hard food )(Sorry for the spelling O.o)
I was expecting this the hot water bottle is coming through a thick duvet so its warm but not hot. i think he has worn out and had enough and ready to go rats only live 2-3 years and my boy is over 3

And breeding is not ever okay, those homes you fill are taking homes from animals who will be euthanised in shelters.

As for your oldie, have you tried wet cat food? You can even soak dry dog or cat food for him. Ensure is a great thing, too, for older ratties. Strawberry ensure from wal mart is rarely refused, it is sold for old humans and is a drink.

I have a rat who's just over two and a half, he's a sweet old boy though. He has some muscle weakening, and I think arthritis in the hips, bald areas (he is a rex, this is common with very old rex rats), his skin sags, and he has the start of HED, but he's still going strong and playing and cuddling.

Like I said there are no Rescue rat progams where i live or i would adopted them all...

That doesn't mean you need to make more rats. Check craigslist, I bet there are rats there who need homes. There are other ways to rescue, they just take more effort.

I have a rat from a neglect home. She belonged to a friend of a friend. My friend asked me to take her because the owner accepted she could not provide proper care. Rosebud was living in a tiny tank, all by herself, eating puppy food. She was depressed and very clingy. I had her spayed, and intro'd her to the boys, and she's now a very outgoing, if a bit obnoxious, doe.

Yes, it takes effort. Rescuing from the source costs a lot in time and money, where a rescue group will do some of the hard work for you. But, if you care about rats, "free" craigslist rats and things should be your first priority or they will become snake food.

There will ALWAYS be rats who are in need of homes. Rather than making more, take those who need homes into yours and give them love and family.

And yes, I could have bred my sweet, sweet Romeo to Rosebud. But, I didn't, because there is NO need to breed. I love Romeo. He has no health issues, he's very healthy and with a very good immune system. Always last to fall ill and he's been to the vet very few times, once for an abscess in his genitals that needed a minor incision to drain how I wanted, and once for a minor surgury to remove a cyst that was growing quickly, and too close to his genitals for my taste. He's had meds for URIs that his cage mates have had, but never been badly afflicted himself.

I would -love- to have his pups. But there's no reason to have them. I could save lives with the space and time and money it would take me to breed a litter from him.
