Marcel breathed a sigh of relief as he saw who it was. If it had been anyone other than Henry or Jan, they would be as good as dead. As it was, he didn't really think they would be telling the captain; after all, he knew Jan's secret could get her and her brother dead as well. However, he didn't really know if they would believe the truth that Allegra wasn't really married to Arthur. As Allegra hurriedly pulled away and attempted to justify what they had just seen, he inwardly sighed, closing his eyes for a few seconds. One word to the captain, and Arthur might have him walk the plank, as Marcel didn't think the man would be happy to find out that his 'wife' was making out with someone else. Just because Allegra had chosen him over Arthur, didn't mean the man didn't still have feelings for her. Allegra would be safe, but as for him... He wasn't so sure about that. The truth could hurt, or more importantly, cause people to kill.
After Allegra had finished her hurried explanation, Henry averted his eyes to Marcel, narrowing them slightly as he waited for his friend to justify. "Well, Marcel? Do I have any reason to believe this?" His tone wasn't cold, just disbelieving and somewhat awed. If Allegra was lying, and the two of them were just messing around, he admired Marcel for having such courage; most captains would execute anyone that so much as looked at their wives.
Marcel nodded. "I would not lie to you, and nor would Allegra," he said calmly. "Her words are truth. We met Arthur at the dock, and when he invited us onto the ship, I suggested that they pretend to be married, so to not cause Allegra any grief or advances from the rest of the pirates." He glanced over at Jan. "You out of anyone would know what it's like to want to hide the truth, Jan." His tone was slightly warning, as if daring them to say anything. Though he liked the two and respected them, he wanted to make sure that they understood the importance of keeping it a secret.
The two exchanged glances, and Jan nodded slightly. "But why have you not spoken in so long? And why did they-" She jerked her head towards Allegra, meaning she and Arthur. "-act so friendly to each other?"
Henry nodded in agreement with her sister. "Anyone would have guessed that they truly were married."
They held a fair point, and Marcel hesitated, not sure how to explain it. There wasn't much he could explain, in fact; he had only made up with Allegra a few moments ago, and didn't feel like telling anyone about their problems. "It doesn't matter now," he said dismissively. "But I swear to you that Allegra and I aren't doing anything wrong, and it's extremely important that no one figures this out..." His voice trailed off, and he glanced over at Allegra, seeing how alarmed she looked. "It would put us both in danger."
(I haz an idea for after this problem resolves :3)
