How much time do you have for training and excersize?
Would you like a smart dog that gets bored easily, or a laid back dog thats willing to learn occasionally?
What size dog are you looking to get?
Will the dog have a purpose or just be a 'pet'?
How much time can you spend of grooming?
Do you want a laid back dog or a high strung energetic dog?
What body structure do you like the look of? Bulky and muscled, sight hound, toy?
How much time are you home and do you want a puppy or an adult?
I always try to push sighthounds because they are just great dogs. Whippets resemble much smaller greyhounds. They are laid back when in the house and only need a short sprint once or twice a day or a long walk once a day or so. They are generally not destructive, but love to learn new things and catch on pretty quick. They have short sleek coats so grooming isn't an issue, however they may need a jacket in the winter. They are not generally nippy, nor aggressive to other animals. They usually WILL chase small furries, being a sight hound, but growing up with animals they have a much less chance of it. Getting from a good breed they are not timid, but may be a little standoffish until the now the person. =)

They're hardy little dogs with a lot of energy, but they are very loving with their owners. They tend to be intelligent and independent, so training can be a bit of a challenge, but I find I bond more with my two Jack Russel terrors terriers than I have with any other dog I've trained.
