I have dachshunds - they don't bother the rats, but one of them gets jealous of them and goes and eats any bits of their food that has fallen on the floor. It's weird, he does it with the budgies' seed as well, and starts whining at you for attention if you talk to them ><
What types of cages do you guys have for your rats? :3 And have you tried modding/building one? ^^
My three girls have two Savic Freddys, joined one on top of the other. Half of the roof of the lower one remains, with lino over it for a shelf. : ) My dad joined them together. ^^ The girls have a lot of space for hammocks and such, and we can give them food and treats and stuff in the upper part, and toys and chews and a wheel in the bottom half : D There is also different types of rope and stuff used to help them get around (and hammocks, cubes, bridges etc everywhere). ^^

Aww! Dachshunds! Our(my family) 16 year old Dachshund recently died. ;(
Anyways! Back on topic! If I get some rats, my granddad said he would help me build a cage for them. Catered to their needs and my wants. :3 Now all I have to do is actually get some rats. T_T

The baby rats at the place my sister works at (pet shop) are getting really big! I think in a few days she'll be able to find the genders out and seperate them, is there any age that is sort of a universal rule that they need to be seperated by?
They're all black/very dark grey hooded ratties, 8 I believe from a very young rat mum who came into their work and gave birth after about a day of being there. She's doing a good job, but she gives us warning nips if we get too hands on with the babies, as expected. They've started to be weaned off her milk and onto the mixture and are very active and so cute. We're getting two and I got to choose the names - Zayn and Louis. Blame my one direction obsession for that. They have grown really quick! Ill have to get some photos.

Hey guys, I've got a question xP
Well I have two awesome rats. One of them is really neat and uses the bathroom in one corner, and never destroys anything. The other one, Pixel is much more messy, and she destroys anything nice I put in the cage. Like a few days ago, I got them a really beautiful and expensive hammock, and it is already getting destroyed. I feel bad about it, but just want to know... is there any way to make Pixel stop destroying her hammock? XD My mom suggested putting something that tastes bad on it to make them not bite, but I think that would be cruel.. Any suggestions? They're both really happy with their hammock, and I'm not going to take it away, but it looked so nice at first, and now it's sort of torn up...

I'm no longer an active member of this community, but I'm always looking to commission art of my dog, Pascal the Pomeranian! ^^ PM me if you're interested in drawing him, and we can discuss payment.

Some rats just destroy more than others and there's no way to stop them. Hammocks will get wrecked, unfortunatly. Many people (me included) simply cut a square of fleece to hang up, no hemming or anything. Then when they wreck it, I'm not out of much money and can just cut a new square!
I hate how destructive they can be, one of mine is a veritable queen of wrecking things. Anything within range WILL be modified.
