More, as promised!
Dear SJ,
Maro was waiting for me in the kitchen. When he saw me, he walked over from around the counter.
"What did the prisoner have to say?" he asked, his red eyes gleaming in the morning light.
"Nothing important," I lied. I knew Maro would become over protective if he heard what Cobweb had said down in the basement.
Maro shrugged, taking my word for it. He padded to the fridge, opened it, and began to rummage around. I leaned against the counter.
Just then, Kira and Jerry stomped downstairs, arguing about something pointless. I think it was about if the bird they saw was a dove or a pigeon.
"Would you two shut up?" Maro barked at them.
Kira rolled her eyes at Jerry and joined Maro by the open fridge.
"Anything to eat?" she asked, sparing Jerry a look of daggers.
The dark brown she-dog pulled a can of Pepsi out of the fridge.
"You know, the prisoner is still down in the basement. It's been three weeks. Shouldn't Derek have taken him out for interrogation?"
Kira's question echoed throughout the barren kitchen. She had a point, I realized.
"His name is Cobweb," I said, raking my gaze over all three dogs who were now leaning against either counter. "And Kira's right; we can't keep him down there forever."
Jerry laughed, his brown tail wagging in amusement.
"Looks like Lux has been doing some visiting," he chuckled, toasting his can of Pepsi with Kira's before taking a sip. After he swallowed his mouthful of soft drink, he continued. "And I must admit, that Cobweb guy is pretty good-looking. To a girl, at least."
Kira snickered while Maro remained silent; his eyes held an unreadable emotion as he gazed at me.
All of a sudden, Derek padded in. His black hair looked as if it had been washed recently and his wings were rather shiny.
"Hello," he greeted formally. Then, glancing at the fridge, he growled, "Maro, close the dang fridge."
Maro did as he was told while Derek stole the spot beside Kira.
Kira appeared to blush under her fur as the dog leaned on the counter next to her.
"Morning!" she yipped. The dark brown she-dog then held out her can of Pepsi to him.
Derek held up his paw in a "no thanks" manner and turned his head to gaze straight into my eyes. I thought I could die then and there.
"So... I understand you've been doing some interrogation of your own this morning," he said, his voice cold yet unaccusing.
When I nodded, he continued.
"What did he tell you?"
A cold lump formed in my throat. I didn't know if I could tell Derek the truth.
Don't be stupid, Lux. Of course you can. You just can't tell the others. Especially Maro....
"Mind if I tell you in private?" I asked, suddenly not wanting to be facing the four dogs.
Derek glared at Maro, Kira, and Jerry, and they backed out of the kitchen.
He turned his gaze back to me. Steady. Unwavering. He was serious.
"Alright," I said, standing up straight. "He said----"
Just then, my phone rang from my room upstairs.
"Sorry," I mumbled, racing up the staircase and digging through my bag until I found my iPhone.
The caller ID read "Mom."
