i did a bit of research.
Turns out actually that hasbro didn't own the rights to the names of a lot of the g1 characters, the only one the still own is Applejack.
Also Rights to the name Firefly... I think are owned by FOX because of Joss Whedon's cancelled tv series.... Firefly..... and Joss Whedon couldn't use that name when he went to make Serenity. So yeah......

They lost their copyrights on the characters of G1, so they just couldn't use them anymore. However, here is a good image that describes all of that and the comparison of ponies.
