This night was wraught with danger, indeed it was Halloween night. Though the people of this town did not trick or treat or cellabrate. Today was the day of the dead. It only happened once a year, but it is the night, when the souls of the dead come out to walk amongst the living.
The October night was cold and brittle. The sun had long since sunk below the horizon, leaving nothing but darkness in its stead. Leaves rustled in the threatening wind, and rain hammered down upon anything in its path. An eerie glow had cast among the trees. The yellow moon gloomily lighting up only a small portion of the land. Only enough for one to see naught two paces ahead. All feared this accursed day, young and old. And rightly so, for the dead did not come back for any.....good intentions.
And it is in this little town where the tale is set. Where fate shall unveil its tricks and its thievery. And so it begins.
At the crack of midnight, and the flash of lighning that played across the sky, she awoke from her slumber. Her skin was pale, dripping with sweat, another horrible dream. Her blue eyes studied the room, watching every shadow, studying every noise, every drip of rain against the window pain outside. She took a deep breath, relizing her nightmares wernt the only things she should be worrying about. It was after all, The day of the dead. She gulped, pulling her covers further up until only her eyes could be seen peeking out from beneath.
As thunder roared over the town, the girl jumped from bed, unable to control her fears. She raced down the dark hallway, her feet creaking over the wooden floors, which only added to her anxiety. Reaching her parents room she shoved open the door, but found the room to be empty. She gulped, tears welling up, where could they be? She needed their comforting words, those being her only sanctum.
She spun around as another roll of thunder hit, and lightning lit up the darkness. She stared at the hallway, it was so quiet.....so petrifyingly dark. She crept back towards her room, when she noticed the front door swinging open and closed from the wind of the storm. She took cautious steps forward, eyes wide and alert, though she wasn't ready for anything she was about to witness. Her hand shook as it rose to grab the doorknob, and instantly she felt a looming figure behind her.
Her mouth dropped, breath coming in in raspy, and quick sucks. She was too afraid to turn around....she didn't want to see. No...she didn't want to see.
Icy cold breath trickled down her neck, shivers, cold shivers running down her spine in waves. She gulped, slowly turning around, but kept her eyes on her feet. Slowly her eyes began to wander up, only seeing the black of a cloak and nothing more, but she wouldn't stop there. Her eyes continued to climb, till they met with the red evil ones the illuminated the room before her.
The face belonged to a man. His face was a white as a sheet, his hair seemed to be missing in several places. Scars ran along his face, too many to count in fact. But what horrified her the most were those eyes. Those red, Beady, devilish eyes. Looking into them put her into a trance of terror, unable to look away, unable to speak, unable to move.
The "creature" stared at her blankly, the expression almost sickening to see. She bit her lip, eyes trying despritely to look away, but failing miserably. It took a step towards her, the cold skin of the monster touching her skin. Finally she jumped back against the door, she being the one who was blocking her one and only escape. "Please. Please don't hurt me." she begged, voice cracking as she spoke.
The monster cocked his head, as if he did not understand. A wicked smile coming upon his face, his teeth black and rotted, most were missing. The sight of him only became mire horrific as the seconds passed. "Please...leave me alone." she said again, surely he would listen. But her request only produced the same reaction from the thing. And in turn, instead of replying, took another step towards her.
She could feel her heart beating, it felt as if it might explode or break through her rib cage at any moment. She would have to do something. She moved forwards only to twist the doorknob and fling open the front door. Dashing out into the rain, she was met by a group of terrified villagers like herself. She looked around, hoping to see her friends, and her parents, but they were not among the group. "Where are the others?" she asked, teeth chattering from the cold. "Dead." one man replied in a gruff voice.
She shook his words away. "that can't be true." she said mostly to assure herself instead of trying to argue. "They are dead sweetheart. I saw them." an elder woman piped up. "No.....no...." she said, those tears finally breaking through and cascading down with the rain. But her pain was short lived. There was no time to grieve. Waltzing out of the house, was that man. That dead man.
"Stay back!" A villager shouted, a dagger in hand. The monster merely laughed before continuing forward. "Stay back I say!" the villager exclaimed again. She watched in horror, cowering behind the other people who had gathered in the center of the town.
