Otterkit groaned. He was really hungry. Even a stick might help right now.

"I guess you could try that shrew if you want," Dawnweaver said, unsure.

Otterkit gnawed on the shrew. When he hit the hard part he yelped and backed up. His tooth was bleeding.

Dawnweaver winced. She didn't feel very good at this mothering thing. She wished Koisplash were here. "Come on Otterkit, I'll take you to the medicine den," she said in a hurried voice, gently nudging him out. "Well be right back, Patchkit."

Patchkit lie still, breathing slowly in her sleep. She was being visited by her mother, all the way from ShinePelt. She was dreaming happily.

Otterkit tried to close his mouth but hissed in pain. He was bleeding slower now.

Dawnweaver brought him to the medicine den after glancing back at Patchkit and called for the medicine cat apprentice. "Musicpaw?"

Musicpaw poked her head and when she saw the bleeding tooth, she frowned in concentration. She said "Otterkit, can you please open wide for me?"

Otterkit did as Musicpaw said. He opened his mouth very wide.

Musicpaw took a quick look at the tooth. She said "It's nothing serious, just keep your mouth slighly open, it's just a very, very small cut. It may hurt, so I'm going to give you two poppy seeds." and actng with word, she got two poppy seeds.
