the tale of braelyn and sergius, as told by our narrator,
Image
the overwatch

"What are you doing out here so late at night?" he asks her. I had seen this scene one too many times. Around midnight, almost like clockwork, a lost girl (didn't matter her age. This graveyard sees many... visitors at this time of night of various otherworldly degrees, from young ghosts who never had a chance at life to old vampires who had been there and done that) would wander her way in, and never wander her way out.
I guess it was this time of night. I always took a stroll down the rows of graves, remembering the grieving families of even corpses long gone, their faces, young children clinging to their mothers or older siblings, and older siblings standing off to the side if they hardly knew the family member or didn't like them. I didn't judge- I had been there myself a few times.
This girl who had wandered in was one of the newer faces I remembered from a funeral earlier that week. Her name was Braelyn and she was just barely out of high school. She had been in the graveyard for a while, probably since nine or ten o'clock, doing the same thing that I was: strolling the headstones. However, she was probably making up stories about the text that was engraved on some of them or stopping by a family plot and, again, making up a story.
The light provided by the streetlamps scattered about was enough to read to, but only if you were reading the first two headstones down the row. I stopped a few rows back once the clock started to toll midnight.
And, like clockwork, out came one of the newer resident vampires. I don't see why the older vampires hadn't driven him out. Even I didn't like him. Sergius (as he liked to call himself) still had some of his human looks- gray-green eyes bordering on a light gray if viewed in the right light and pale blond hair. He wore a nice black suit and a split mask, one half white and the other black, with golden tendrils winding their way around and in the two halves. He and Braelyn looked like they had gone to the local masquerade, seeing that she had worn a black and gold dress with a golden half mask.
"What am I doing out here? I should ask the same to you," she says, turning around at the sound of his voice.
"You're probably doing the same thing I am- making up stories about the people buried under the headstones. And isn't that always more fun with somebody else along?"
"Well, yes but-" she protests. She's stronger than the other ones, I'll hand her that. I sigh; I already know how this is going to end.
After a few minutes of idle chit-chat ("Well it's Halloween! Nobody is who they seems..." he says in that awful whining voice), they start picking down the row, making up even more silly stories about the people buried beneath them.
I sigh again and turn.
In the morning, there will most likely be a front page story about a missing girl. It doesn't mention her name or where she was last seen, but we all know.
Or, at least, the Overwatch knows.

Maka ♂ & The Treasure ♀

"Find the treasure, it's your destiny." That's all they ever did, ramble on about my amazing destiny as a thief. But it's better than having someone boss you around I suppose, Marcus and Tyran don't care about what I do. Having criminal guardians can lead you to do great things, illegal, of course, but great nonetheless. and that was their goal, make me the best criminal I could be.
That's what brought me here, to this dark, quiet corridor. It isn't a damp corridor, or one that smells like death and decay. Just a long, dark, silent hall. And small, dark, silent me.
But what I'm looking for is small, brilliant, and, though also silent, causes the most talk. The Scared Treasure.
No one's ever seen it and lived, outside of the royal family of course. There are myths and rumors, but the only thing known for sure is that it's a family heirloom, and it's made of pure, soft gold.
Having something like that in our possession, we could do anything we want. And that's why I'm sneaking around one of the most well-guarded places in the entire kingdom.
Keep your footing light, like the moonlight. You want to avoid that by the way, moonlight will make your pelt's brighter colored patches shine.
Use your small body to your advantage, press into the corners where the skylights don't reach. Useful, skylights are, there aren't many places you can avoid a light that comes through the roof on all sides of the room. But they exist, and a good thief can find them.
From behind me, a guard strolls quietly down the hall. On his left is a shining sword hilt, peeking from its leather sheath. And, of course, myself, crouched waiting in the shadows.
That's another thing, years of training lets you figure out what dexterity the greater percentage of gaurds are. Left handed, not something you'd expect. Always keep on the side where the sword hangs, they'll draw with the opposite side and then have to turn to get at you easily.
Carefully, I unhook the thick, long leather collar around my neck, wielding it in one paw. rearing up on my back legs as he passes. Grunting in surprise, he goes for his sword and I quickly whip the leather collar around his neck, catching it with the claws of my other paw and pulling hard. He goes down, gagging and pulling at my artificial weapon. Most important rule- anything and everything can be used as a weapon. After a moment, he goes limp and I hop over his body, refastening the studded collar and grabbing my arrow from the dark corner. I "borrowed" it from some other guard on my way in, they really should watch their stores of extra arrows more carefully.
I run quickly through the hall, keeping my footsteps as light as possible. I have only a couple minutes tops before someone discovers my unconscious friend.
I skid to a halt, almost loosing my footing and crashing into a large vase. Clever placement, really. Anyone traveling too quickly down this polished floor will bring the giant pot upon themselves, which would then set off the alarm and trap them until someone comes for them. Clever indeed. Or it could have just been pretty, but I prefer to over-think things rather than under-think them.
In front of me is a small wooden door that I almost overlooked, so unlike the other rooms I'd already checked, which were large, conspicuous and heavily guarded, only to have nothing behind them but empty, well polished marble floor. The door is small, a full grown wolf could only just barely have fit through it without ducking, and was scarred with claw marks and deeper, more precise grooves as if it had been hit with a sword or two. It had no handle, only a lock, and two bands of metal wrap around the frame, small studded spikes protruding from them every couple inches. I can't see why it would be hidden here, but it makes the most sense. When you want to keep something safe, sometimes the best protection is keeping it hidden. This they'd done well, if it was indeed here. I'd almost skipped over the little door as a closet.
With a long curved claw, I dug around in the lock until there was a satisfying click and the door swung open on silent hinges. I stepped inside eagerly, I must be so close!
The room is small and square, maybe fifteen feet both ways, and has no windows. If not for the light filtering in from the hallway, it would be completely dark. I can see candles along the walls, which must be how they light the little room when it is occupied. As my eyes adjust, I can see the ceiling is no taller than the hallways outside, and the walls are made of simple, gray stone. The floor seems to be non-existent, the cool marble of the hall ending abruptly at the doorway. Disappointment crashes down on me, I see nothing of interest, just another decoy. But still, I am curious.
Darting back into the hall, I grab a torch from it's sconce in my jaws and trot back inside. Using it, I light one of the candles and instantly they all go up in flames, small flammable wires that connected the wicks burning away to nothingness and sending sparks floating to the earth. I gasp as the room is lit, dropping the torch to the ground. It sputters, landing flame first, and the dirt extinguishes the flame, singeing my paw on the way down first. But I don't care. The door swings shut behind me, but I have eyes only for what I've been preparing for all of my life. There, hidden in the shadows in the corner farthest from the door is a small, golden shape, glimmering and shining in the light. It is shaped like a wolf, silver eyes set deep into the surface, white lace decorating its back. It is small, smaller than me, and seems to stare right back at me with a life it shouldn't possess. Before I know what is happening, I'm gliding across the dirt floor, peering curiously at the shining golden object.
This must be the treasure, and how beautiful it is. I touch a paw to its surface, it is smooth, and cool, made of soft, pure gold. Which, may I add, is also very heavy. How in the world did they expect me to move this, much less make off with it?
Grumbling, I circle the statue, pushing my anxiety back down. Not time to worry, I have a minute or two left before they notice, and they'd have to figure out where I went too. After my third time pacing around the heavy treasure, I notice something I hadn't before. In the left shoulder, there was a small keyhole. I pushed the lace out of the way, dropping it onto the ground, and inspected it. I look at it curiously for a moment, why in the world would a golden statue need a key? My claw didn't reach far enough to get to the mechanics inside. Then I remember the arrow, which I'd shoved into the side of my studded collar for safe-keeping, since I had neither a quiver or a belt, and need my mouth for other things. Reaching over my shoulder, I grab the shaft in my teeth, pulling it out. It takes a while but there is a satisfying click as something unlocks. Then something strange begins to happen.
Gold flakes off, peeling and falling onto the cold dirt floor. From outside, a commotion is starting and I know my time is up. Whatever is going on, I have to get out. Now.
But I can't just leave, can I? I was so close, and they would definitely up security next time. And the statue is beginning to come apart, gold breaking off in larger sheets now, peeling away like a bad sunburn.
I can feel my eyes widen in horror, what the heck have I done? Black peeks from beneath the gold, sprouting like grass growing in fast forward.
Frustrated, I go to yank the arrow from the lock, only to find it is stuck, both in the statue and in my collar. I'm left staring at it in disbelief, pushing and tugging against the soft, flaking gold fur. From outside people storm by and someone crashes into that vase I saw near the door. Finally, I yank the arrow's shaft free, the tip stuck behind in the closing flesh as a sigh breaks through the muffled noise of the guards, and white patterns trace themselves across the black fur that has appeared. I notice with a jolt that the silver eyes have turned ruby red. And then it moves. The treasure that has been guarded by centuries is alive. For a moment it's just this strange creature and myself, a slight little thing with bold patterns, beautiful eyes, and an innocent, confused face. She looks at me with those big eyes and asks a single question with a voice as smooth as the metal she'd emerged from,
"Who are you?"
I'm in shock. It... it's a wolf! A young wolf, like myself. Not a statue of one, but an actual wolf. There's a banging on the door and I look around frantically, but I know its no use, we're stuck. Unless I can somehow dodge past Behind me, the door is blown off it's hinges, quite unnecessarily, my stupid self didn't try to block it at all. It collides with the stone wall beside me. Guards pour in and I brandish the pointless arrow uselessly against their swords. Dear Lupin, help me!

And these are what make man great

Soft-shod feet paced around the room, slippers threadbare and floor worn with endless cycles. Green eyes focused blindly on what was directly before them, no more, no less. Desperation had given way to hopelessness long before, leaving behind only a gaping hole.
Soft blue eyes watched in concern, pivoting slowly in the middle to follow the boy's progress. A tiny sigh slipped past half-open lips into the otherwise silent air, hanging for what seemed like hours before at last it faded into oblivion. The girl started, jerked from her reverie as the boy stopped his endless circling around the empty room. His eyes stared unseeing at the wall, no different from the other three.
"We aren't going to get out of here, are we?" His voice was soft, but the words thundered across her mind. After a moment she shrugged, unable to think of anything to say. The boy turned slowly, face expressionless as his eyes met the girl's. He sighed again, sinking to the floor in exhaustion. "We aren't, are we? We're stuck right here, forever."
The pain in his voice touched some long forgotten chord deep in the girl's being, puzzling her. She glanced slowly around the room again, taking in the four identical walls she had been seeing for as long as she could remember, devoid of door and windows. The boy whimpered, softly, an involuntary sound. She turned back, a small half-smile twisting at her mouth as she reached out, patting his hand. "I don't know about that. Don't give up hope, okay?" The boy looked up, a tiny glimmer lighting his eyes.
"Hope's the only thing we can chose for ourselves, anymore."

And the walls kept tumbling down
In the city that we love
Great clouds roll over the hills
Bringing darkness from above

Oh where do we begin?
The rubble or our sins?

How am I gonna be an optimist about this?

Denyer and Yenrow

Yenrow was made from cloth and thread Denyer of potions, they were ment for each other!
Yenrow was brought to life by a good witch named Veeliay.Veeliay Had made a plush toy the size and shape of a newborn puppy and brought it to life using all her knowledge of magic. To her dismay the pups fur stayed in cloth and stitches. Even though she stayed cloth Veeliay loved the pup, she named her Yenrow(witch for cloth child!). In another town around the same time a Witch named Hengr(male!) also created a pup.Hengr mixed a piece of his own fur and many old potions into a large caldron to make a son.All was going well until the mayor of the town found out about Hengr's potion child and angrily stormed the house.Hengr fought the mayor but a small unlabeled potion dropped into the pot.The pup crawled out but was mutated with a third eye and a weird smile.Hengr toke the pup and fled to the village were Veeliey lived as it was witch friendly. The pups grew and went to the village school. They were teased and when they graduated the final class they were relived. When the village dance was held Denyer(potion child) asked Yenrow to the dance. She accepted and it is to no one's surprise that they are now a couple.(will make another story another time.)

Tap on my window knock on my door
I want to make you feel beautiful
I know I tend to get so insecure
It doesn't matter anymore

You have always been beautiful to me.

I first saw you when you sewed on my black button eyes; I think you were only ten, that time. But you were beautiful already.

You took me everywhere, and I loved it. I loved to see the smile on your face, to hear your laugh in the air, to feel your arms around me. There wasn't a day that passed by that we weren't together, and I felt that it would last forever. I knew it was an unrealistic wish -- I watched you grow, after all, from a sweet little child to a young teenager, and I knew older people would not want to play with toys all the time. I knew this when one day you put me on your writing desk, and day after day I sat there, unmoved, untouched.

But I still watched you. You were still beautiful.

You were beautiful, even as you gossiped about friends over the phone. You were beautiful, even as you began to switch from bright colors to sombre clothing. You were beautiful with the spiky hair, the hidden piercings, the tiny tattoo that you didn't want your mom to see. Even that evening when your mother screamed and scolded you and you sat at your table and I watched the tears streak down your face, you were still beautiful.

I still thought you were beautiful, even if I barely ever saw you in your room. I'd see you climb out the windows late at night and come in the wee hours of the morning, sometimes not even coming back for days. I'd see you rush to your closet, then to your bed, then right out again without a second glance towards me. I still thought you were beautiful after your parents' divorce, after you told your mother you didn't want to stay with her, after you threw me haphazardly in a box with your other belongings when you ran away. (I don't think you meant to take me, really.)

As you pulled me out that evening and looked into my eyes, I stared up at your face against the backdrop of a starry night sky and I knew. I knew what I always knew.

You are beautiful, and I feel a tear fall from your eye to my cheek.

I don't mind spending everyday
Out on your corner in the pouring rain
Look for the girl with the broken smile
Ask her if she wants to stay awhile

And she will be loved
She will be loved.
when first i appear i seem mysterious
but when explained i'm nothing serious

Ensorcell ♂ xxx ♂ Threr

and as the day's woes fade
deep into an umber
gray, a drooping shade
you question if they'll ever feel the same
no more brilliant ways, such a shame
the lovely sunrises are banished and locked up tight
for it is bad luck for anything to be so bright

( --though, he was considered the enabler, bringer of peace, of things, of sun; and while perhaps he did not do the best job, he was the only one trained for it. With an electric green glow, a hollowed bone mask, and flimsy armor, he puttered around and guided the sun up. Birds followed him, and he collected feathers, considering it his way of talking to the earth. Often he would twiddle them between his fingers or entwine them in his dark, shaggy hair. Mostly, though, he kept them in or on his armor. He labelled it extra protection, though everyone who could see him labelled it as incredulous.
He first met Threr on a stormy day, when no one could be found. It had been impossible to bring up the sun that day, as the clouds fought him off, but he tried and that was all that counted. Most couldn't cultivate the thought of seeing him and ignored his very presence, much like the brain will disregard a stench be it harmless. But Threr saw him instantly and would not let go, for this being was so magical and mythical and everything he's ever wanted for thought. With large, innocent eyes, he approached Ensorcell with a faint weakness and fatigue. He started it off by waving, a jolly one, and then he smiled. It tugged at his stitches and brought upon hurt, so quickly he stopped. Ensorcell watched with wide, hideous eyes and began to question why one's mouth would be sealed. Banishment? Stupidity? ...Or maybe even the clear opposite?
It seemed to be the last, as the man talked with his eyes. They were broad and shimmering, even in the thickest of downpours. The man even had cracks throughout his body and he creaked as he walked. Yet, Threr couldn't help but smile, and he did so anyways. This was not good. Tiny spouts of blood leaked from his lips and he winced, eyes screaming and beaming all at once.
"Ah-- Excuse me, a-are you alright?" Ensorcell's general fleeciness when it came to talking to others was slayed across him like a sheet. He reached out to the man and tried to help, but he backed away and held his mouth. Next, his eyes stared back at Ensorcell's, and the message came across that he was fine. Just trying to live.
He tightly-knit man pulled out a pad of paper and a pen, regardless of the rain that caved around them. In big, bulky letters was the name Tʜʀᴇʀ, which shimmered like his eyes. After so, he scribbled one more phrase, perhaps so daunting Ensorcell couldn't dream of it.
I'ᴠᴇ ᴄᴏᴍᴇ ᴛᴏ ʟᴏᴄᴋ ʏᴏᴜ ᴀᴡᴀʏ.

The words, albeit tight and neat, were rough and scratchy and they made him shake. In fact, he was so focused on the words themselves he didn't think of the meaning, or why he was being dragged away. )
