I had one of those models at one point too (actually, my son dismantled it like last week).
If your mum is willing to support/fund your art I really would say that you can't go wrong using both the photo and physical models. But also, as Inari Rose posted, you can sometimes get them for super cheap, and they aren't bad at all (mine was also like...$9, the only difference between the one in the picture was that mine was unfinished).
On a more on-topic subject, something I had alot of fun with was looking up the anatomy of different animals and combining it with human anatomy for some really interesting anthros. I'm actually sorting through some of my realy old art this year, so if I find any of those wierd/crazy things I'll post 'em in here for giggles.

Oh hey I have one of those. I have a mini one oof those too that i keep on my desk, and I have a bigger one that I often take to school for art class.
all of our stuff is in boxes because we're moving and I ove going through my old stuff that I never realized I had. I found my old pastels, colored pencils, all kinds of brushes, and my old royale pencil kit. I love going through old stuff especially art. I like seeing how much progress i've made over the years.

That's so cool! It sounds like you guys had a lot of fun. The only furry I know is Snowz. I'm at her house right now and were working on an animation.
On a different topic, I'm making my own fursuit! I'm ordering some foam soon but I can't order the fur yet because I don't know what character to do. I would've done my fursona but the tuft seems to complicated...
