My most recent "pair" was actually a dream I had last night. o_o;;
Hazel [♂] & Ace [♂]
Hazel was a grumpy squirrel who lived in the countryside near the farm owned by Ace' people. When Ace was very small, he was told about squirrels and squirrel-chasing by the older farm dog, Maverick. As soon as little Ace was able to walk, the mischievous puppy set out to find himself a squirrel to chase. The only problem was...Ace wasn't quite sure what a squirrel looked like. Maverick had told him they would be found by trees and would smell sweet, like the meadow clover they often ate. So when Ace stumbled across Hazel's path, it's really no surprise that he didn't know that he had found the squirrel he sought."Hey! Hey--um, I mean...excuse me Mister, but have you seen a squirrel around here?"
Hazel sat up stiffly and risked a glance over his shoulder at the roly-poly puppy wriggling and wagging behind him. The squirrel swallowed heavily and shook his head vehemently, unable to speak around his mouthful of sweet clover. The puppy was crestfallen.
"Oh..." he said sadly, looking so pathetic that Hazel felt oddly guilty. The squirrel groaned and carefully reached up with his front paws to remove the clover from his mouth.
"Why're you looking for a squirrel, kid?" He asked cautiously.
"I'm gonna chase one!" The puppy yelped joyfully, his sadness gone and his tail wagging anew. "Maverick told me it's really fun, so I wanna try it too!"
Hazel blinked. Maverick. He knew that name, didn't he? Wasn't that the nasty German Shepherd? Feeling the need to be far, far away from this clueless pup, he coughed politely and turned to leave.
"Well, uhm...Good luck with that kid." Hazel popped the clover back between his teeth and scampered off on all four paws, racing toward the nearest large tree. But luck was not on his side today -- the puppy followed him, chattering all the while.
"Maverick said they're really furry, y'know? With big fluffy tails...kinda like yours! And they smell real sweet, like that clover you've got. And they're real tiny like you too..."
Hazel's heart hammered wildly in his chest. He nodded and made appropriate noises of interest, all the while trying to run faster across the impossibly wide meadow, but he was quickly losing steam. At this point, he would be lucky if he made to one of those barren elm trees by the farms--that's it! He would take shelter on a farm. At least for the time being until he could find himself a better nest. But those were few and far between lately, especially with winter setting in...Besides, the pup was probably trained not to stray into territory that wasn't his. Hazel had learned that quickly about farm dogs. Surely this clueless little ball of fluff knew that much at least?
The squirrel squeezed beneath a fence and scampered up the trunk of a sturdy oak located within the perimeter of a relatively small farm. Once safely up in the branches, he heaved a sigh of relief and set about nibbling on his clover. He'd just barely gotten started when he noticed that irritating little puppy had squeezed beneath the fence as well and was now sitting at the base of the tree, staring up at him.
"Hey Mister! Why'd you come into my backyard? Are you gonna live here now?"
Hazel leaned over the branch slightly to stare down at the puppy. "Wh-what did you say?"
"This is my yard!" The puppy replied cheerily. "We're gonna be neighbors, right Mister?" He beamed and wagged enthusiastically.
Hazel dragged a tiny paw down his face with a groan. This was going to be a long winter...
Despite the fact that Ace drove Hazel crazy when he was a puppy, the two eventually formed a rather unusual friendship after Ace fell ill and Hazel felt compelled to help the ailing dog however he could to ease his own worry. In the process, the two formed an intense bond and are now often seen lazing about together in the sun. Hazel also likes to save a few choice nuts from his harvest for his canine companion and Ace finds it enjoyable to give his smaller squirrel friend rides out to the meadow to look for clover or sunflower seeds. They're rarely apart, despite the fact that Maverick strongly disapproves and has tried upon several occasions to put an end (often violently) to their friendship. But Ace and Hazel have managed to stay true to one another and to the joy they receive from being together. <3
