Thank you. I had a really hard time deciding which one to use... the other candidate would've been the red sled dog from last year's Advent, but that didn't seem right.

It didn't start with a spark. In fact, it was raining the day he first saw her. It wasn't love at first sight- in fact, even now, nobody's quite sure what the two of them saw in each other. It began, however it began, the first day of junior year.

He was the boy in the front of the class; the one who wore glasses, who always turned his homework in on time. Overachiever, they called him. Teacher's pet. All he wanted was to be valedictorian- it was his only hope of going to a good college. His family was so poor, there was no way he'd be furthering his education if he wasn't the best of the best.

She was the enthusiastic one; always humming to herself, a prodigy with any sort of instrument. She was a lovely singer, and even when she was speaking her voice sounded musical. She had no interest in boys of any kind- in love of any kind, for that matter. She just wanted to move on with her life as soon as possible.

They were in English together. He sat across from her at a table, and they worked with each other on group projects. The only reason he asked her to homecoming was because his mother pressured him to go; the only reason she accepted was because she had nothing else to do.

He had approached her after class, polishing his glasses nervously with the hem of his shirt. He knew the mathematical probability of her acceptance- it was something very much like zero. "Would you, er, maybe possibly if you haven't got anything else going on perhaps consider going to homecoming with me?"

"I always needed time on my own.

I belted out the words as I stood on stage, all eyes on me. Nobody knew I could sing. Nobody really knew me at all. But this was the talent show, and this was my talent. My heart thudded loudly, and I felt so nervous, but at the same time I knew that not even this was doing Papa justice.

"...When you walk away,
I count the steps that you take.
Do you see how much I need you right now?"

The video and picture slideshow the I made played behind me. Old photos and videos of Papa and I when I was little... I used almost everything that I had of him and I together. And even all of that was hardly enough to play throughout the entire song. My eyes got watery toward the end of the song.

"When you're gone,
The words I need to hear
To always get me through the day,
And make it okay..."

I took a deep breath, trying to hold off the crying until the last line was done.

"...I miss you."

Then the tears poured down my face as it hiccuped and puckered. I was trying to not look like a complete crybaby, but my black hair was sticking to my face from all the water on my cheeks. The principal made his way to the middle of the stage next to me, like he did with all of the people who entered.

"Wow, that was wonderful, Lily," he said. It wasn't until then that I realized how loud the crowd was cheering. "Now, let me ask you one thing," he began. I nodded. "If you could make one wish right now, what would it be?"

He put the microphone to my mouth. I tried not to let my voice be too shaky. "To see my Papa smiling at me in the audience."

The principal frowned. "I'm sorry, I can't do that." He paused. "But I can let you see him smiling backstage." It took a moment for this to sink it. And then I didn't know what to say, I just stood there, studdering like a fool, when he came out onto the stage, still wearing his military uniform. I was frozen for a moment, but that didn't last long. I sprinted across the stage and threw myself into his arms. He lifted my up and then hugged me tightly. We embraced silently for a long time, because no words could speak what kind of moment this was for us. The crowd hollered and cheered. I looked into my Papa's eyes and smiled. Then he quietly spoke something I'd wanted to hear my entire life.

"You don't have to miss me anymore."

This is beautiful and made me cry. I lost a young aunt to cancer this year and it was a pretty rough time for our family, so I could very much identify with this.

I'm glad you found it as powerful as I do<3
My aunt had breast cancer, but beat through it. I give my heart out to you; I'm so sorry for your loss.
