Allie
Footloose and crazy, Allie is a contemporary dancer. She's fast, energetic, and daring, but cares for her younger siblings with a gentle heart.
Katrina
Happy, slightly hyper, and eager to learn, Katrina is a tap dancer. Although she may seem slightly unfocused at times, she's always ready to try something new.
Marie
Funky, with a go-with-the-flow attitude, Marie is a hip-hop dancer. She's the spirit that keeps her siblings going, always ready with a joke and a smile.
Alicia
Delicate, light, and graceful, Alicia is a ballerina. She may seem shy, but underneath are nerves of steel created by years of intense training.
Joanne
Still new to the world of dance, Joanne hasn't yet found her calling. But with her sisters to guide her, she's sure to discover what she was meant to perform.
Five sisters, one passion. Never give up.As the music started to play, Allie felt herself slow get lost in the intense steps and turns. She shook her head as her hair-tie came loose and shiny black waves cascaded down her back. She heard several giggles come from behind her and a voice whispered, “What a drama queen.”
Allie laughed as she threw her head back into her final pose and took a flourishing courtesy. Her classmates laughed along with her as they applauded her performance. Her teacher shook her head, smiling. “Alright ladies, take a water break.”
Eyes shining, Allie flounced over to her bright blue duffel bag and whipped out her iPhone. She smiled in satisfaction as she was greeted with 4 new messages, one from each of her sisters …
Katrina flew across the studio floor, mastering the shuffle-step-slide move again and again. She kept her taps in time with the beat of the snappy drums playing in the background. She stopped only after a sharp clap from her teacher. Smiling sheepishly, she met her teacher’s watchful eyes and shrugged as if to say, “Sorry for over-dancing. Again.” Her teacher nodded, a glimmer of amusement shining in her eyes.
Katrina skipped over to the wall and took a seat next to her friend Jae, who was laughing.
“What’s so funny?”
Jae smiled. “Oh Katey-bug, you’re the only student who can manage to make Ms. Temple laugh. Anyone else who had misbehaved like you would’ve gotten yelled at for sure. You’re a silly little mystery, Katey.”
Katrina giggled, but didn’t respond. She was too busy sending out not one, but 4 messages …
A fast-moving song with intense bass levels blared out from Studio C. Black ringlets and lilac-shadowed eyes popped and locked across the floor as Marie moved her body to the rhythm of the bass. She could feel it beating in time with her heart as she kept her moves right and ended the routine with a back flip. Applause and high fives all around put a glowing smile on her face. As her teacher called for a rest, Marie and her friends collapsed to the floor in a sweaty, tired heap. Suddenly, Brittany sat up.
“Oh, Marie, you have to tell the others that joke about the moose and the old man. It had me laughing for ages!”
“Hold on a sec, Brit. Let me finish these texts.” Marie’s chocolate-brown eyes twinkled as her fingers flew across the keys, responding to 4 texts at once …
“Attack it, attack it!”
Alicia’s head snapped in tight circles again and again as she spotted her turns perfectly in time with the piano music. She nailed not a single, not a double, but a triple pirouette and glided into a series of balancés. She ended by stepping into a perfect fifth position, arms raised gracefully over her head. Monsieur Olivier gave her a single nod, portraying both approval for her routine and dismissal from center stage. Bowing her head, she delicately walked back to her seat next to Sophia and fluttered to the ground like a fragile butterfly.
“Better text them now, Leesh, before he looks over here again.”
Alicia opened her mouth to protest, but Sophia just shook her head and nodded towards Alicia’s bag. Smiling her thanks and keeping a watchful eye on their teacher, Alicia quietly took out her phone and glanced at it. A red light flashed four times, letting her know she had four missed alerts. Ever so slightly, she reached both hands into the bag and began to respond to each text from beneath the duffel bag cover …
Joanne sat in her room, flipping through the pages of a dark red photo album. There was Allie in a shiny blue leotard that showed off her dazzling white smile, Katey looking snazzy in black suspenders that matched her black tap shoes, Marie in mid-air, caught on camera in the middle of handspring and Leesh in a pale pink tutu, dancing the part of Clara in a winter showing of The Nutcracker. She closed the album with a sigh and flopped back onto her bed.
Her four older sisters had been dancers for as long she could remember. Her childhood memories were that of attending recitals and tagging along on shopping trips for costumes. Forever, she had dreamed of one day becoming as graceful as Alicia or care-free as Allie in her movements. All she wanted was to one day find her calling in the world of dance so that she could live up to her sisters and dance as they did. Suddenly, her phone buzzed and she smiled, knowing that there would soon be four text messages waiting to be read …
I love you! I really do. That was brilliant. <3
