This is really cool^^ I'm not jewish either, but I know someone who is. But he don't really have anything to do with the jewish religion XD (He pretty much only celebrate what christians do XD ) So I don't know anything about this holliday either... But I can't wait to see what we get =3

And Flintfang, isn't it because the Maccabees were attacking us or something?

No. XD We were the Maccabees, lead by Judah (and his brave female cousin, who seduced the enemy general, got him drunk, and then chopped his head off), and we were fighting the Greeks, who had invaded our holy temple and destroyed it. We needed to clean and re-sanctify the temple, but we only had enough oil in the lamp left for one day (making more took eight). God made a miracle and let it last eight days. Remember, in the synagogue, the lamp needs to be lit eternally to represent God always watching over us. The oil is why we eat latkes and jelly doughnuts, they're fried in it. I'm Jewish, so I would be glad to teach everyone more about it.

I'm surprised how few members have even heard of Chanukkah/Hanukkah...in elementary school, teaching about Christmas, Chanukkah, and Kwanzaa was part of the curriculum! It's also very important to me to learn about other religions besides my own.

haha I was surprised no one had heard of it at all, I was taught the basics of Hanukkah and Christmas in school, never Kwanzaa though. its nice to learn more though espically about something as fun as potato cakes and yummy things like that.

I know it as this -

Dreidel, dreidel, driedel,
I made you out of clay,
And when you're dry and ready,
I'll take you out to play -

(Then the version my friend made up xD *Or so she says...... O.o)

Dreidel, dreidel, dreidel,
I made you out of gum,
And when you're dry and ready,
I'll stick you to my thumb!
hi! I just got unCOPPA'd, so if you remember me, feel free to send me a message!

It is. I wouldn't call latkes cakes, though. They're more like McDonald's hash browns (but better quality), served with either applesauce or sour cream.

Kwanzaa isn't a religious holiday. It's a black civil rights celebration that lasts seven days that tells children about Africa and their culture. The colors that represent it are black, red, and green (Chanukkah's are blue and white, like the Israeli flag). They have a candleabra similar to the Chanukkah one.
