Entry for Contest Two (2)
~*~ The First Days ~*~
The large, armored wolf stomped his large paw on the ground and growled,
"This is our land, monsters. Leave this place before we destroy you."
The creature across from the wolf laughed. It was a raspy, horrid laugh that seemed to destroy all meanings of life and happiness.
"This is not true, warrior."
It said, licking its lips. Its scaly skin shone in the setting sun, as it advanced towards the wolf. The wolf's armor glinted as he trotted forward, his head down, and his ears back. He growled when they came too close to the line that divided their lands.
"Step no farther, creature."
he said, standing his ground firmly.
"No, Wolfling."
It said, amused,
"We will not move, for it is you, who are moving to close to our land."
This made the wolf very upset indeed. He pawed the ground angrily as he tried to control his temper. He didn't want to begin a war, especially with his pups coming soon. He turned away growling and started to walk slowly away, then he turned again and said sharply,
"This isn't over, creature. I will reclaim the territory my ancestors once had."
The creature laughed again, turning away,
"No! Wolfling, I am afraid you are wrong! It is I who will regain my land on which my father's father tread."
With that, the two great, and equally powerful, creatures walked slowly away, leaving the war to begin another time, and day.
Five months later....
"Now, Rayo, pay attention! This will be your first lesson!"
His father said, sitting in front of the young pup. The pup was chasing a large cream-colored butterfly and smacking it was his large paw. He then came and sat by his brothers and sisters to begin their first lesson. The father looked at all his wonderful pups, surveying them closely.
Rayo was quite the trouble maker. He didn't understand the importance of the pack quite yet. Dax, was always determined to win. During small scrimmages that he and his fellow litter mates would engage in, he would use his head (sometimes literally) to win the battle. Though, he was not a pup to forget fun and games. Tira, was quite a lot like her brother Dax, competitive and strong. Despite her strength in battle, she sometimes was a bit nervous to settle down.
Her father sighed, remembering this, as he looked at her with loving eyes. She cocked her head to the side, wondering what he was thinking. He moved on, looking at his next pup.
Max. He was shy, quiet, and preferred to say away from his litter mates. He often would wonder off by himself and stay away for quite some time, then wonder back just in time for dinner. Last, sat the little Foalan. She was often on the bottom of all the scrimmages they did as children, but used to trick her brothers and sister into things. She would mostly pick on Tira, her sister.
"Ugh, dad! Why are you taking so long!"
Tira cried, falling back into the sandy earth. She rolled around playing until her father made an ahem sound. She immediately flipped back up into a sitting position and smiled sweetly.
"I understand that you may be nervous about your training, my children,"
Their father said, walking slowly in front of them,
"But, I will treat you as children until you prove me otherwise. Do I make myself clear, Dax and Rayo?"
He noticed out of the cornier of his eye the slight moments of the two brothers. They were slightly boxing each other with their paws, seeing who could make the other flinch first. Rayo looked down guiltily and Dax said softly,
"Sorry father."
He nodded, and continued.
"First, I feel I must teach you the greatest enemy of the Warriors."
He stated, as he started to climb up the nearby hill. He motioned for the pups to follow. As the pups stood, Rayo and Dax started to box each other again with their shoulders this time. But, their father did not notice, instead he continued with his lesson.
"Our foes are evil creatures who killed over half our pack millenia ago, leaving the strong Warriors left. Ever since then, we could not kill each other off, instead we had to battle, just to keep our young safe."
He turned as they reached the mount of the hill, and smiled at them sweetly,
"That means you little ones."
He then stepped aside on the hill top and asked,
"Look out to the horizon. What do you see?" Rayo stepped up with Dax by his side and said,
"I just see lots of boring stuff. Like grass and trees."
"Yeah."
Dax added, shoving Rayo's shoulder,
"That's all I see too."
Then, Tira stepped up, surveying the land. She yawned and said,
"Though I can tell that the groups of trees are forest, I don't see much else, father."
Next, Max. He barley glanced at it and said softly,
"Its just Iskit, father."
Lastly, Foalan. She proudly studied every detail of the land laid out infront of her. She would sometimes turn her head this way and that to see things more clearly. She then stated,
"I see a forest, with smells of pray wafting from it, and then grasslands, with various flowers and bugs living in it. Then, on the far end of the forest, a dark patch of land lies."
She looked up at her father and blinked,
"Is that the Kronadors' land, father?"
Her father nodded, sighing sadly,
"Yes, little one."
He said, looking at the black land far in the distance.
"Legend says, that before the Kronadors lived there, that land was the best for hunting, and its even said that the gods had lived there at one time."
This made Foalan sigh in annoyance. She was smarter than she let on. She didn't believe in such stories, in that her father clearly did. Her father evidently did not hear his daughter's annoyance, and continued on,
"When the Kronadors came, every so often, we would have an epic battle. We would have... What children?"
"Armor!"
Foalan cried, dancing up and down.
"Correct, little one. We would have armor. What would the Kronadors have?"
Their father asked, looking at all of them. Foalan started to speak, but decided to wait for her brothers and sister to think.
"Uh... Tough skin?"
Rayo asked timidly, thinking very hard.
"Correct, Rayo. What else?"
His father answered, looking at the remaining pups who haven't answered yet.
"Sharp teeth maybe?"
Asked Tira, squinting her eyes, and looking up at the sky and thinking.
"Yes!"
Her father said excitedly. Tira and Rayo looked very proud of themselves, as they smiled from furry ear to furry ear. Foalan was quite proud of her litter mates, flashing them smiles every once and awhile. As for Max, he seemed to blend into the backdrop. He never said a word through out the lesson, until Dax said,
"Hey! Wheres Max?"
It was true. Just like him, he wondered off. Their father growled, and paced the earth where his son was, his nose to the ground. He mumbled to himself, as the other children watched from afar.
"I wish that Max wouldn't do such things."
Foalan whispered to her littermates.
"Yeah! Max could miss something important."
Rayo said, glancing at Dax.
