Steampunk simply embodies a time and a place. The time... the late 19th century. The place... a steam powered world, where air travel by fantastical dirigibles is as common as traveling by train or boat (or submarine). A place where national interests are vastly different than our own version of history. A place where the elegant and refined are as likely to get pulled into a grand adventure, as the workers, ruffians, and lower classes. A place where the idea of space travel is not so far fetched. A place where lost civilizations are found and lost again. A place where anything is possible, and science can be twisted to meet ones own ends. That to me is the essence of Steampunk. It can have political overtones and commentary, or it can be straight escapist fiction. Either way, if it meets these criteria. It is Steampunk.

For those that don't know what steampunk is, go here. It's an oddly amazing combination of Victorian era style, mixed with sci-fi ideas. As said by Abney Park, Its part of an era that wasn't, but one we wish had been.

-Steampunk is something I have known about all my life, but I never knew what it was called. My favourite movies were Disney's Treasure Planet and Atlantas: The Lost Empire. I loved them. I loved the style and the characters. I just never knew it was steampunk...

You are the Explorer, the embodiment of steampunk’s adventuring spirit.  For you, clothing should be rugged and reliable, and just as functional as it is attractive.  You probably prefer khaki or leather, and your accessories are as likely to include weapons as technological gizmos.  You probably wear boots and gloves, and maybe a pith helmet.  Most of what you wear is functional, and if you happen to wear goggles people had better believe that you use them.  In addition to Victorian exploration gear, your outfit probably includes little knickknacks from your various travels.  Above all, you are a charming blend of rugged Victorian daring and exotic curiosity.

What you wish to be called: My fursona Anomalous Result is steampunk, so you could call me by that name, Anomalous or just Anom if you're feeling lazy. Otherwise, feel free to call me Louis Stuart Basil Fielder or just Louis, it's the name I go by usually.

Are you into Steampunk, or is this something new for you? Through my life I've taken passing interests in a variety of genres, styles and aesthetic movements. From cyberpunk to a more "noble savage" theme, I liked them all but never really felt too attatched to any of them. When I discovered steampunk, it struck me that it was what I had been looking for - both with the advanced technological theme but with a historical twist. Plus it embranced my love for airships, goggles and gadgets! I love making things as well, and steampunk serves as a great muse. I'm currently making a steampunk blunderbuss (not strictly Victorian, but fun and themed nonetheless)! Eventually I aspire to design and invent an Amazing Flying Machine without violating air space laws. Yeah, maybe I'm a bit of a dreamer. If it works in theory it can work in reality!

What's your steampunk style?:- You are the Gadgeteer, the embodiment of steampunk technology. Ironically, many of the things that most define your style are probably too large to easily carry about, but given the opportunity you would prefer to be seen surrounded by boiler engines, gear-driven calculators, and incredible automata. Of all the steampunk fashion styles, you place the greatest emphasis on technological accessories, and you are the most likely to create elaborate gadgets that are as much a part of your outfit as your clothes. You probably have goggles, but unlike most people you consider them to be for more than decoration. Whereas most people might look odd carrying a satchel of tools around, for you they may well be essential. Above all, you remind everyone that what sets the genre apart from Victoriana is simply the level of technology.

By the way, has anyone heard of Professor Elemental, the steampunk rap artist? The Prof's a spiffing gentleman, completely eccentric and completely charming. If your interested, check out one of his more famous works here

Hello, Louis! Sorry I haven't replied. I have been very busy plotting to take over CS writing and studying for the SATs/ACTs. Bleh.

Anywho, I was beginning to think I was the only one here! I agree with you. Steampunk sparked my obsession With airships, sky pirates, gadgets and goggles. An Amazing Flying Machine. Sounds intriguing. You know, as an explorer, I'm always willing to test new modes of transportation...

I love Professor Elemental. He's brilliant! I saw a video of his performance at... TeslaCon? I think that's it... I don't know anymore. Too many steampunk conventions (which isn't a bad thing. It just makes it hard to keep track of them.)
