Watepaw nodded and scented the air from some prey. She looked at a large oak tree,and saw a small vole,eating some nuts. She dropped into a low crouch, awkwardly trying to balence her weight on her front paws. She stepped on a leaf and the vole dashed. She dashed after it,and nearly hooked her claw on it's tail,but missed it by a mouse tail's lenght. Not noticing where she was running,she crashed into a tree,headfirst. She sat up a little dazed,and rubbed her head,her eyes welling with tears of emmbaresment. "I'll never do anything right!" she spat,trying to hold them in.

Hawksky quickly followed Waterpaw. "What's wrong, Waterpaw?" he demanded. "I know you aren't just tired. You never used to do this when you missed prey." He softened his voice. "I wish you would tell me. Maybe I could help. There is nothing to get upset about, it was just a vole."

"You don't get it! I can never do anything! I can never catch any prey,I can never fight,and I can never pay attention! I've only caught 3 pieces of prey during my whole time as an apprentice,and I couldn't even fight the fox! Maybe if I did,Goldflower would have never died! It's my fault! I never tried helping with the fighting,and I didn't get help quick enough!" she poured out. She was also still very upset that Hawksky and Rouge were mates,but she wouldn't dare telling him this.

"Nobody could have saved Goldflower," said Hawksky sadly, wrapping his tail around Waterpaw. "Starclan called her back to them for a reason unknown. And you are still a young apprentice, you haven't learned everything yet. Maybe it was my fault for letting you fight. I haven't taught you all the hunting or fighting moves yet." Hawksky shook his head. "You are doing great! As well, or better, than could be expected from a apprentice of your age and experience."

Waterpaw sighed and looked away. She was still a faliure for an apprentice. She wasn't good enough for Hawksky. She got up and shook her pelt,still unbeliveing that she told him all that. Even though Starclan had " called Goldflower for a reason unknown," she still felt like it was her fault. Of course Hawksky would say it wasn't,but she knew it was.

"Do you want to go for a swim?" Hawksky asked, hoping it might cheer her up.

"Sure," she mewed,not very enthusiastic as she would have been. But maybe she could drown herself in the process... No,she wasn't suicidal. But she really wanted to just sleep forever,and never wake up.

Hawksky walked to the pond and lept in, purposely splashing Waterpaw.

Waterpaw made a face as the cool water sprayed her face. A flash of her old spirit came back and she lept in after Hawksky. "I'm gonna get you!" While she was swimming with him,she completely forgot about him and Rouge. It was just her and him now. Not Rouge. Her.
