I think most of the people doing that are in case there ARE other pets at the end, or for decoration, or for later trades.

Kratos is not amused at all that the Forest has given him to me when I was actually looking for more meat to make maps. Especially since I searched and searched for nearly three weeks without finding a Burnt Dog. Now I don't want one any more and I get one instead of the Meat I want.
