And the forest gives me grass... when I've already reached the limit for the horses. I'm starting to think this isn't random at all, but deliberately coded to be annoying.

There's a limit? i didn't know that. Is it only for horses or are there limits on other creatures as well?

I have no idea about the others, but the horse limit is 12.

I am kind of lolling on the fact that I get all th time the meat plate, and the silver and gold cup, and so far no gem encrused gold or silver cup, or the cake plate.
