I carried Jake's body to the pile of dry wood. It took everything I had to loosen my grip on his limp frame. I lay his body on the wood, folding his arms over his chest.
I felt a hand on my shoulder. I turned my head slightly. Eli was holding Jake's spear.
"Are we going to burn this with him?" he asked, his voice breaking on the word burn
. I took the spear from him and shook my head.
"No," I said, my voice barely audible, "I'm going to keep it." Eli nodded and stepped back.
I lifted a large wooden splint and lit it on fire. I inhaled deeply and lowered the splint to the wood. And Jake's body.
The wood caught fire with a loud whoosh.
I took several steps back, keeping a good distance away from the now towering flames.
I could no longer see my husband's body, but I was glad. I didn't want to see the flames devour him. Tears sprang up in my eyes, but I did nothing to stop the flow. My two children stood just behind me, holding hands and whimpering softly. I held my arm out to them and pulled them close.
Eli folded his arms around me. I turned my head to that it was against his shoulder and sobbed.Scene form a story/role play prologue. My character Neera cremating her husband, Jake, after he was shot down by a war machine.
Didn't turn out the way I hoped, but meh :/.
Oh, and BTW listen to this song while reading:
