I've heard it used both ways (A unicorn/pegasus mix and what a unicorn's horn is made of); in the Pony fandom Celestia and Luna are alicorns.
Luna is only tall in her Nightmare Moon form, though. ^^

I honestly think Celestia and Luna are horses pretending to be ponies <_< That is why they are all ruling over the small pony folk, and might be prone to better powers. After all any other 'relatives' of Celestia are "nephews" so who knows?

Or maybe they're aliens. That explains the 'ali' in alicorn. XD
How is Blueblood related to Celestia in any way? He was probably born before Luna was released from her Nightmare Moon form. As far as we know, Celestia has no other siblings too. e___e

True, which means she is still just a kid, while her sister is much older. Afterall, Luna did spend 1000 years in stasis inside the moon XD So perhaps only her 'evil' form aged, while her true form didn't X3

Adoption in defiantly a possibility. Celestia adopted one pony folk as a relative to have some sort of family line that is more related to the ponies -in both size and that they age.

Technically They Are Horses Because Their Pretty Much Gods. They Control The Sun & The Moon, And Are Pretty Much Older Than Everything Around Them! XD They Are Tall To Show Their Differences. Sense Prince Blue Blood Came Directly From Equestia, And Isn't A God Of Anything, He'sJust A Normal Pony Makes Sense?
