Okay, here's my oppinion. I am fully prepared for backfire, but here goes nothin'.
Wolves are pretty cool animals. I believe, though it's just a theory, that humans are attracted to them because of their resemblance to dogs, which, subconciousley, makes you like them. People who hate dogs generally also hate wolves.
Wolves are no more, OR LESS, important than any other creature on the planet. Hunting animals for nothing other than sport and ego-gratification is wrong, no matter what the animal. Certain wolf species are endangered and need preservation efforts, and certain wolf species don't.
There should be no preservation efforts for the common grey wolves, as they don't need it, however that doesn't mean we have a right to shoot them willy nilly. Hunting is fine, so long as you use every bit of the animal that you can. Waste not, want not, after all.
Wolfaboos like wolves because it's COOL to like wolves. Same way it's cool to like Vampires. They've taken the coolness away from Vampires and wolves, and that's never going to change.
So guys, stop arguing. Different strokes for different blokes. Just live and let live.

I very much agree with you. I DO like wolves, but specific ones like the grey wolves don't need to be as protected as people think.
And even though she moved away,
We always get calls from our daughter.
She has eyes just like her father,
They are blue when skies are grey.
And just like him she never stops;
Never takes the day for granted.
Works for everything that's handed to her;
Never once complained...

I found out about Scimitar Horned Oryxes because of ZT2 :'D And now they're one of my favorite animals. Not to mention Rhinoceros ratsnakes, which are endangered, I believe, although not listed with the IUCN.
I saw some an oryx with a few dama gazelles at a zoo and I think I squee'd. They're extinct in the wild, but breedings have been successful in zoos. Yay <3

Axolotls are adorable and critically endangered, but I believe it is something to do with habitat destruction instead of people going out with mini pistols and shooting them, unlike the big game animals! At least when you're a small and "cute" animal you don't have people hunting you for the pleasure of doing so.

I agree with you mostly, and I don't think you'll get much backfire at all.
I believe that people often like wolves for the pure fact of liking an animal that is the "wild and free" version of their pet doggy. I am very particular when it comes to dogs, I absoloutly hate the gundog breeds and hounds, but I love the spitz and a few of the working, but yet I adore wolves just because of their importance, beauty and misunderstanding in many ways.
Wolves actually are more important than some species, because they are a keystone species, they help keep the balance in where they live, and without them it would slowly but surely fall apart. Keystone species are more important than animals that aren't part of that group, and not just wolves.
People shouldn't stop trying to protect "common" wolves against trophy hunting and unfair killing, but they do not need to be our main priority especially in places like Yellowstone, where wolves are thriving. But in some places, the grey wolf numbers are dwindling and need to be helped. But yes, grey wolves as a whole do not need our main attention, and hopefully never will have to receive it.

Well, I do see your point there. But the thing with these 'keystone' species is that everything then becomes keystone. Fodder animals such as rabbits, chickens, cattle, keep the hunters alive, who in turn keep down the populations of the fodder animals. It makes all animals vital, in a sense. xD
Also The Apprentice refrence for the most epicest of wins. I loved Jim. So glad Tom won though, he's my favourite. X3

In a sense you're right with that, but the keystone species are there to keep prey numbers in check, which leads to keeping other animals healthy and provided for, like I said in an earlier post. For example, rabbits are not a keystone species because if there were no rabbits, nothing would be as dramatically damaged in the ecosystem as if beavers went (no dams causing much less irrigation which means lesser diversity and health in the land). Yes, predators would have lost a food source, but it is not something that would kill a whole landscape, because there are other prey items for the predators!
All animals are important, but some are more important than others.
And apprentice ftw.

I am ready for the backfire you guys will give me.
I am a ranch kid, and if any of you don't know what that means, it means I was raised around not liking wolves. I personally don't LOVE them or even really like them for that matter. I wouldn't like it if they went extinct, but I don't love them. Yes, they are beautiful, but everyone just thinks that they are the most wonderful animal on the planet. I personally think the people that want to have one as a pet, need to be put in a physiatric hospital. Wild animals should never be pets (Excluding Mustangs but different story). Wolves kill stock, around my area they kill stock just because they can. They kill cattle and sheep and don't take a bite out of the flesh, and just leave carcasses all over. My dad's friend had 17 cows in one week killed by wolves and none of them were eaten. Like I said, just my opinion.
There's something to be said for a place that hasn't had all the rough rode out of it.
