Question about free adoptables

Hi everyone! I’m kind of new to this game and still learning some things about it.
One thing that has got me stumped is how the free adoptables work. I’m not sure how to “adopt” a free pet without having to send a trade of pets (don’t have items atm). Is there a button for adopting them or does a trade need to be placed?

If you see a pet on my profile that’s on your wishlist, send me a pm and we can probably work something out. If it’s one I have a duplicate of just go ahead and send a trade

You send a trade asking for the pets your adopting as a ready to accept trade^^ you usually put a message such as "adopting from your shelter" or something similar:3

So it’s not required to put anything in the trade? Just put a message in the box?
