Entry: Option A

[Disclaimer that another name is used for Grim for most of the entry]

In this world there are some creatures that seem to be born under a mysterious star — beings that would otherwise be the species they were born as with all the normal traits of such are given something unusual, something more that defies what most consider reality to be. Often, this strangeness isn't immediately known to the beings themselves, nor to their kin. For some, it surfaces over time as a natural progression, and for others, it may spark all at once upon encountering the right catalyst.

For Grim, it was a little bit of both.

———

Three puppies entered the world on an unremarkable spring day, born upon a pile of old blankets tucked away in a barn. All three pups were healthy, as was their mother — a stroke of good fortune for the stray dog and her young. All three little ones were similar in size, shared identical dark brown coats that would likely shift some with age, and all had the same hearty appetites. Their mother loved them all equally, and watched over them with eyes full of pride, wondering just who her children would grow up to be.

As time passed, the trio grew little by little. Their ears opened as did their eyes — revealing the grayish-blue eyes of young puppies. Eager to explore, they crawled around their blankets until gradually they built the strength to try to stand, and eventually to toddle on their little legs under their mother's keen gaze and occasional guidance. Their milk teeth grew in, and it wasn't long before they were attempting to explore outside of their bounds.

The puppies' temperaments began to show themselves as they developed — Mei was eager and excitable, always curious about the world around her. Kai was friendly and cheerful, quick to socialize with the kind humans that would bring food for the dog so she could focus on her puppies. Gin was both curious about the world and interested in others, though he was far more thoughtful and quiet in both traits than his brother and sister. While his sister sought out mysteries and his brother sought out companionship, Gin would appear to be lost in thought, and when asked what he was pondering, he would simply say "something distant" — he had no words to describe the sensation that he sometimes felt pulling at him, like one of his siblings distractedly tugging at one of his ears, but fainter, and more ambiguous. His siblings and mother would easily accept that and move on — after all, that's just how Gin was. It wouldn't be until the puppies were nearly a year old that it would become apparent to the whole family just what that unusual sensation was.

———

It was January. The winter was cold that year, and as was often the case, the dog family was curled up together in the warm bedding that the humans had brought them. Gin was on the verge of dozing while listening to his sister musing on about why she thought the sun disappeared at night when the distant tug he often felt turned into something indescribably sharp that wrenched him right to his feet. Absently, he registered the surprised calls of his name from his siblings and mother as he whipped his head around, the tug growing more insistent still. His black fur stood on end, the pale stripes his siblings lacked catching the light of a lamp kept in the barn as his entire coat rippled.

"What's wrong?" his mother urged, also on her feet now.

Another shiver rippled through Gin as the sensation grew stronger. "'Something distant' has become something near," he grit out, his very teeth tingling with the desperate sharpness.

Like a snapped rubber band, he was off, racing through the dog door of the barn, not noticing the sounds of his family hot on his heels. Gin wasn't sure what he was racing towards, but he instinctively knew that it was important to be faster than the dread nipping at his heels that was chasing him in one particular direction. His feet led him to a human dwelling, one that looked perfectly normal on the outside, one without lights on that sat quiet in the winter night — however, Gin knew instinctively that this quiet would shatter in the worst way, and he had to do something to keep that persistent dread from becoming a permanent bane on his soul.

Taking a deep breath, Gin let out a howl — one he'd never before uttered that would raise the hair of any creature that heard it, one that was louder and carried further than should have been possible. Lights flickered on in one window, then in another. With his pricked ears, and hearing better than is usual for a dog, Gin heard human curses and grumbling quickly turn to shouts of alarm. Four humans tumbled out the front door, chased by wisps of smoke, and the dread that had been chasing Gin finally abated into the usual distant tug.

While the man frantically talked into some human contraption, Gin hurried to wrap his body around one of the trembling kids. Taking his cue, his family quickly jumped to do the same for the other child and the adult woman, helping to soothe away some of the cold and the stress until sirens could be heard approaching. As the sound got closer and the smoke rising from the house increased, Gin gently disengaged from the child, and with his family close behind him, he dashed off for their home.

By the time they reached their comfortable nest, all four were exhausted and lost in thought. "So the 'something' you often think about are things that might happen?" Mei mused in a mumble, breaking the silence for the first time since they'd left their home in such a rush earlier.

"I don't know, it could be. This time it felt like dread was going to haunt me for the rest of my days if I didn't do something to prevent it," said Gin, his eyelids drooping closed.

As sleep claimed him, he missed the glances full of knowing, love, and acceptance his family shared around him, all silently vowing to support him, even if he was born under a mysterious star.

———

After the night of the house fire, Gin became a bit of a local celebrity. He was greeted warmly on the street, and often given delicious treats. He remained his usual self — friendly, if lost in thought, though quick to slip away if too much attention was cast on him. The sense of "something distant" remained distant for a long time following, though with some careful introspection, Gin realized he could get a vague sense of the events each tug was tied to. Most were fleeting, perhaps just "possibilities", moments that could have been concerning, but had been "nudged" out of the way by a different action than was predicted. While that was just his theory, it would eventually prove itself to be fact after years of experience.

As time passed, Gin found himself wondering if his Sense (as he and his family had dubbed it) was limited by distance. If he tried to follow a thread before it became a sharp, desperate tug, would it feel stronger? Were there even more things he could prevent? This curiosity followed him through his average days, and finally, his mother called him out on it.

"What is it that's eating at you, Gin? Does it have to do with your Sense?" His mother's soft voice gently guided him out of his reverie back to the present. His brother and sister were also gazing at him curiously, their brown eyes so different from his own intense orange.

"Yes. I was wondering if following the fainter tugs would lead me to those who are close to disaster," he admitted.
Mei's eyes sparkled in interest. "Ooo, do you think you might be able to save more people that way?"

"That's the hope." Gin's voice was hushed, a bit subdued in both hesitance and hope. He had only just realized that his Sense had a purpose, and that had both thrilled and terrified him. On the one hand, he could help others, in a way he hadn't realized he'd been longing for until he was able to. On the other hand, that might mean there were times he couldn't help, where that horrible dread caught up to him and stuck to his soul. It would likely mean he would have to part with his family, even though he didn't want to. Their life here was peaceful, with humans that cared about them and helped them to the point that they were less strays and more community dogs.

"Whatever you're agonizing over, you're always welcome to return home to us, you know," Kai pitched in. "We'd go with you in a heartbeat, but knowing you, you're probably worried about upsetting our lives or something similar."

His sister and mother chimed in their agreements, and a surge of love for his family rendered Gin speechless. It took several minutes of his family nuzzling him in comfort before he found his voice again. "I need to think about it for a little bit longer, but I think a short trip to chase a tug would be a good idea."

Gin's mother swiped her tongue over his ears affectionately. "Take what time you need. Two eternal truths are that we love you and we're here for you."

Across the many, many, many years that would follow for the collie born under a mysterious star, his family's love and support would remain his dearest treasure.

———

Gin left home not long after to emotional see-you-laters from his family, and many cheerful greetings from humans that didn't seem to have any idea that he wouldn't be back as promptly as usual from his around-town wanderings. Gin latched onto a faint tug, and let his feet carry him, paying careful attention to the intensity level of the feeling as he went.

In his journey to learn more about his Sense, he drifted through towns and forests alike, putting the survival skills his mother had taught him to good use. He found that his physical senses and stamina were also significantly better than most dogs — something he had suspected from time with his family, but hadn't seen enough of the world to truly declare. His growl could frighten off predators much larger than himself with relative ease, something about the pitch telling all their instincts that Gin wasn't to be messed with. His black coat was perfect camouflage at night, allowing him to melt into the shadows — something more literal than he himself realized.

Sometimes, while exploring the distant tugs — which were indeed possibilities, as he'd suspected — the sharp dread would chase him to where he was truly needed. In most cases, his unnerving howl accompanied by his ominous appearance would do the work for him, but sometimes he'd find himself tugging a child away from a road or body slamming an adult away from a rushing river.

Word spread among the area that if you were to hear an ominous howl that shakes your very soul and see a large black dog, you must pay attention, because your imminent end is breathing down your neck. Some spoke this legend with fondness, some with awe, and some with fear — largely colored by their own experiences, but everyone could agree that the creature seemed benevolent. As time passed, someone coined the term Grim Chaser for this dog of legend that would chase away the Grim Reaper, which naturally settled into a shortened version. If spotted in town during the day, humans would slip him treats and talk to him warmly, many knowing someone who knew someone who was saved by the dog called Grim.

Periodically, Grim would return home to his family, to his warm mother, excitable sister, and cheerful brother, with more stories of his adventures at the ready. Eventually, when his siblings set up families of their own, Grim was delighted to pass his stories on to them as well.

Despite being born under a mysterious star and set apart from his species in many unfathomable ways, nothing could ever erase how dear his family was to Grim — to Gin — or how dear he was to them throughout their time together.

Collie Entering: Neptune
Entry: Option D

Neptune’s family is one that dreams of things above. Not in a spiritual way, but literally. Galileo taught Mercury that no matter what, every collie would look at the same sky at night. Mercury taught his family that if they set their sights high, they could be better than any collie they’d ever known. Neptune was born into a family of dreamers, but he was born of a dog who never knew the night’s beautiful light.

When Neptune was born, his family was overjoyed. His white streak was reminiscent of the Milky Way, and as the ticking settled in, his speckled nose and paws were his grandfather Galileo’s adoration. His grandmother remarked on his solid coat (just like his father Mercury’s!), his half siblings squeaked about his pink little nose, and even Mercury himself remarked at Neptune’s similarity to his own family. When he sought the approval of his father Mackey, he remarked that it was a bit hard to believe that Neptune could be his. Regardless though, he was Mercury’s son, and that was good enough for him. He reassured Neptune that he would always adore him, and told him to get ready for that evening.

A special tradition in the family is stargazing - before Galileo retired and moved to the house, the family would go out nightly and lay in a pile of sorts, with Galileo laying in the center as a beacon of light. Other collies were always welcome to join, of course, and with tonight being Neptune’s first stargazing, a few other family friends joined in, their red and white pelts drawing the eye away from the consistency of the blue coats that blended in with the night.

Mackey sat with Neptune as the family gathered. Mackey himself wasn’t all too keen on the idea of waiting outside at night for seemingly nothing, but as a city dog who’d hardly seen stars before he moved to the mountains, he had to appreciate the beauty of it. Neptune grew nervous as he saw more and more collies gathering in the hills, finding himself pushing his tiny puppy form into his father. Mackey readjusted to let Neptune sit between his legs, watching the small fluffy collie shift his big paws nervously. Neptune appreciated the silence, as his voice was still developing as he learned where he fit in with all of these other collies. It was nerve wracking to see them all occupying themselves from the window, he could hardly imagine what the hustle and bustle was like when he was on the other side of it! At the thought of it, he whined and backed himself into his father, looking up at him for reassurance. Mackey wagged his tail and let Neptune lean himself into Mackey with such force that he was practically pushing him backwards. He nodded for Neptune to lay down, watching the last drops of the sunset to fall away from view. The mountains lay to the south, but the range extended far beyond the property the collies and their sheep lived on. Still though, the view from the porch was calming. Neptune laid down and looked up at his dad.
“I need you to know something.” He looked down at his bundle of joy, one of the only things he loved more than life itself. “I was nervous my first night too. It’s scary to be surrounded by so many collies you don’t know. I get it. But then I did it again, and again. Your dad stayed by me. And I promise he’ll stay by you here too. And so will I. You will never walk this life alone, so long as you have this family.”
Neptune’s little tail wagged furiously, his previous fear over joining the collies tonight having been washed away by the joy of going with his father. Mackey picked him up by the scruff, something that was getting harder to do every day, and took him to the night he’d been long awaiting.

His father placed him down just outside the circle, Mercury and the other collies having been waiting for the two to arrive. Neptune watched as they shifted a bit to allow the two collies to join them, and suddenly the fear sat back in. He sat down and whined a little, looking around nervously at his kin and future friends alike. Mercury gave a reassuring tail wag to him, encouraging him to follow his father. It wasn’t until Mackey turned around, though, giving him a soft smile, that he plodded in behind him.

The night was beautiful, the sky was clear - an omen for a good life, Galileo said. Mercury and Mackey lay facing each other, their blue and black pelts bleeding into the colors of the collies surrounding them. Mercury pointed out the most important constellations to the family, including the one Neptune had been born under, Aquarius. Neptune was fascinated by the sights of all the stars, unfathomable numbers hanging above them. When Mercury pointed out the planet he was named after, he gasped. That tiny blue thing in the distance was him. His heart surged with love, adoration, joy - he couldn’t quite tell. Mackey saw the joy as Mercury kept enjoying the view. Galileo’s gruff voice had put some collies to sleep, until one by one, it was just the four of them. Neptune was practically falling asleep too, but every time he’d start falling over, he’d jolt awake as he caught up with gravity. His fluffy puppy coat kept him warm while Mackey shivered, and Mercury pretended not to be cold. Galileo turned to the three, having been pressed next to Mercury, who instantly felt the loss of the heat. He held Neptune’s eyes, looking at the constellation that lay on his muzzle. Neptune wasn’t sure how to feel, or what it meant, and started crouching backwards, but Mercury held him upright with a paw. They stayed like that for a moment, and Mackey put a paw on his back.
“You, Neptune. You will do great things in this life. Be wary of the path your paws fall on, for your mind can do great things. Never forget where your heart is, and your paws will never misguide you.”

At that, Galileo laid back down and back into his original spot. The night passed them by, the sun starting lifting its head in the distance. Mercury had fallen asleep, but Mackey remained awake, though a bit unwillingly. Galileo was old, and as soon as he saw the sun rising, he went into the house to rest. Mackey looked at the sleeping puppy in his paws, Neptune’s tiny body resting peacefully. He nudged the puppy awake, and his not-so-tiny son grumbled a bit as he awoke to his father’s tired eyes. Neptune yawned and blinked, looking up at his father with adoration. He carried Neptune back to the house to get some real sleep.

Neptune would learn later, talking to his half siblings Orion and East, that this was something that would happen to every collie in this family. Those that joined through partnership went through the same thing. The blue brigade remains consistent performers in the field, turning heads wherever they go. Whispers of the family of collies that fell from the sky linger between others at trials and conformation shows. And yet, Neptune would never forget the words spoken to him by Galileo that night. With the stars to guide him, he’s yet to find himself alone.

Collie Entering: Babka
Entry: Option A- word count 3320
Babka’s background:

Babka was born to a decent breeder. The husband and wife pair didn’t have too many litters in a year. They health tested their breeding dogs. The two thought about genetics, conformation, physical fitness, and temperament when planning a pairing. The breeding dogs had a good life. Granted, they didn’t get as much one on one attention or maybe didn’t get to do activities quite as much as they would choose but it was still a good life. Their physical and mental needs were met with exercise, good food, and sports. The owner pair focused on trialing in a variety of events which most of the dogs loved to do.

On the other hand, they weren’t the best of the best. Having so many dogs, they didn’t have time to focus on individuals as much. They also didn’t have the patience for building deep bonds with each dog and the training was mixed. Both claimed to be dog lovers but at the end of the day they were in the business to make a profit. If a dog wasn’t going to help that goal, well…it had to go. They did not have a return policy on sold puppies so if something went wrong it was on the buyer to figure out a new home. And they quickly sold or adopted out any dog that wasn’t going to be a good producer.

Venus was the result of several years of planning and pairings that paid off. When she emerged, the husband and wife were ecstatic. This was what they had been hoping for. As she grew and aged, their excitement and pleasure grew too. They bred for many things and this pup seemed to tick every box. Her deep rich colors were stunning from the get go. Not only were the colors intense but she also came out with rare markings. The unique blended brindling and eye catching, showy, delicate white facial markings made her stand out even more. This one would very likely be a keeper. They kept a close eye on the litter as the pups grew, watching for personalities to emerge. They named the pups after gods and goddesses, confident this would be the start of a new era. The special one was named Venus for her beauty and superiority.

Venus continued to outshine her littermates, not intentionally of course. Actually, the pups had very little idea of what was going on around them. Their world revolved around mom and each other. With her siblings, she was kind, humble, and fun. They all got along and passed the time playing games. As they got older, the humans began interacting with them more. Suddenly they were experiencing new things like grass and toys and soft food. Venus was given a bit more attention and p[raise than the other but they didn’t really notice. As the pups continued to grow and become more active, the humans paid more attention to help make the decisions about which pup would be their keeper.

Around the six week mark, a couple weeks before most would be sold to new homes, the humans did a puppy temperament test. Throughout this time and in the test Venus continued to be exactly what the pair had been hoping for. As her personality developed, she showed many of the traits they were looking for. She was confident with new objects, she had resilience and good rebound when startled, and she was cautiously curious. As far as thinking went, she was intelligent with natural problem solving behaviors and a good memory. Her six and eight week stacks showed exceptional conformation and structure, indicating she would be a healthy athlete.

Venus was sad when her littermates left. She missed tumbling around with them. Originally she was grateful she was still with her mom but she got separated from her at this time too. She didn't understand why she could smell and hear her mom but not be allowed to be with her. She was soon distracted by other things though. The two humans paid a lot of attention to her. She learned to look forward to their visits. It meant she got to play games, get treats, go outside, and interact with another living thing. The humans got so happy when she did certain things, and were very unhappy when she did other things. She quickly learned the things that got rewards and avoided the things that were punished. Her life began to revolve around humans. They were her source of food, fun, and only social. Them being happy made her happy.

Venus continued to grow and learn. The humans her only source of so many of her needs, it became a very dependent relationship. For the humans, they continued to grow happier and hap[pier. The young dog had retained many of her puppy traits. She continued to excel at learning. As her body changed from puppy to teen to young adult, they got to see the puppy structure turn into a strong healthy adult body. As they did various sports with her, she constantly impressed others with her strength, speed, agility, adn stamina. The human loved nothing more than to show her off. They took great pride in this dog and new every time they showed her off, more people were likely to come to them when looking for their next puppy.

Her body may have reached near full growth but her mind was still young. She didn't really understand what was going on when she was put in a room with a male dog. She wasn’t really interested but he enthusiastically knew what he was doing and it was over quickly. She wasn’t really sure what happened but the humans looked happy when she came out so she decided she was fine with it. It was a few weeks later that she began to feel changes. Suddenly her body felt heavier. Joints that had never hurt began to feel sore. But the humans seemed so happy and were giving her so much attention so she was content. She had a rare opportunity to talk to another dog, a female who recognized the signs. That’s when Venus learned she was pregnant. She was going to have pups of her own.

She wasn’t sure how she felt about this. Wasn’t she just a puppy still? She didn’t feel old enough or wise enough to have her own pups. And it didn’t seem that long another that she was nursing herself alongside her littermates. But oh how excited and hopeful the humans were. It must be a good thing. As it grew closer to time, she received even more attention and pampering. The humans must really really love her.

She birthed her first litter. It was hard and painful but she couldn’t deny the joy at seeing those tiny little faces snuffling around her. It was a small litter, just three, but she couldn’t’ve been more proud. She looked up at the humans who had wanted this. They were going to be just as proud of her little ones as she was. Except…that wasn’t a smile on his face. And the woman was helping her clean the pups but she didn’t seem as excited as before. She’d picked up on many words at this point but was still confused as they talked about markings and something about glass and masks. “Ah, oh well…still get a decent price…just have to try again” Something about their appearance didn’t excite them the way she had as a pup. She didn’t understand. They were beautiful pups. None had her white facial marks or her body unique pattern but there still was some lovely brindling.

Time passed too quickly before the pups were taken and sold, just like her littermates. She was alone once more. Except for the humans. Who didn’t pamper quite as much as before. She didn’t understand the cause of their distance. She would just have to work twice as hard as before. She pushed her body to get back in shape. Soon she was trialling again and her human smiled as she brought home ribbons. “These titles will insure an increase in pups’ pricing. Her first litter was probably just a bad fluke. If we can get those markings, those pups will be worth even more”. She finally felt like she had gotten back into as fit as before when she was put into a room with a male again. She came out feeling confused and annoyed. She had just gotten back into shape. She adored her pups and would always remember them with love but why was she going through this again so soon. It hadn’t even made the humans that happy.

A second litter came, much like the first. Only two this time. Both were amazing but the humans weren’t satisfied with just any pup. They wanted specific results from this parking and they hadn’t gotten. One pup, the female, had a small little design on her head that seemed to please them more than the male but it apparently wasn’t as much as they were looking for. Venus didn’t care. She loved her pups just as much as the first set.

One day, the dogs had been released into the front to explore. The pups were getting more mobile now. Venus got sad whenever she thought about the day that couldn't be too far away now. She was lost in thought when suddenly she realized she couldn’t see the male anymore. Frantically she searched the yard. He was no where to be found. That’s when she realized the humans had left the gate open. About the same time she got eyes on him she discovered two things. Thjos little puppy legs had made it all the way to the road. And a car was headed right for him. She didn’t think, she just ran. Faster than ever before. Only because she was one fo the fastest collies alive was she able to make it in time to save her pup. With one last lunge she shoved the pup out of the way. Then there was overwhelming pain.

“What were you doing! Do you realize what you’ve done! She was one in a billion! You’ll pay for this! Wait she’s still breathing." More pain as she was lifted. Then the bumping and rocking of the car ride. She was in and out all the way to the vet.
She woke up feeling out and not quite coherent. She was still drifting in a out, only catching snatches of conversation. “..lucky she’s alive” “Lucky? She lost a leg, half her teeth, fractured a jaw, and now you’re saying you;re not sure if she could have puppies in the future! If she even survives the internal injuries!” “But she’s still alive, many three-legged dogs go on to..” “I don’t want to hear about other charity cases! Put her down, we’re not paying for this. She’s better off dead.” There was some more back and forth arguing. Eventually the vet and a liaison to a rescue was able to convince the husband and wife to sign the dog over to the rescue. They eventually agree to relinquish the dog. “Whatevr, she’s your problem ad vet bill now”. They weren’t going to pay a vet bill for a dog that wasn’t going to bring in any more money. The chances of a future litter were near zero with her injuries and she apparently wasn’t good at passing her genes on anyway. Maybe her daughter would have better luck. With a luck disgust and disappointment the pair left. “Enjoy paying for all that” the man called as he walked out.

The next few days and weeks were a bit a blur. Venus doesn't remember much from that time. The main thing she remembers is watching and waiting for her humans to appear. But they never did. She was in a new place with new smells and sensations and pain and a different feeling body. The one thing that had been consistent all her life was gone. Where were they? Why didn’t they want her any more? Why weren’t they happy with her any more? Why won’t they come back? Everything was too much and she sunk deeper into despair. The vet tech and later shelter volunteers tried to get her up and moving. But she just didn’t have her spark anymore. What was the point? Her happiness had been tied to theirs. Her worth had been whatever they deemed it. And now they deemed her worthless so she must be.

Eventually she reached a point where she was physically stabilized. But mentally she wasn’t trying. It was a struggle just to get her to eat. She was taking up a lot of time and wasn’t showing any signs of improvement. The rescue knew the shelter wasn’t a good place for mental recovery but she also couldn't go home with just any foster. This was going to be a long uphill battle both mentally and physically. The rescue director decided to reach out to a well known ranch who was known for taking difficult cases. The main person was very well experienced and knowledgeable. The handler quickly agreed and came to pick her up. When they did, they asked for any relevant information and learned the husband and wife hadn’t even told anyone the dog’s name. Both had refused to answer the phone so the vet never learned it.

The handler took the dog home to get settled. This would be their first tripod but they had helped other owners make the adjustment with their dogs. And they were definitely well-versed in mentally/emotionally struggling dogs. There were many on the ranch who hadn’t had the motivation who were now happy, healthy dogs. When they got home, they took the dog to what would be her own room while she recovered. As they helped the dog get settled in they realized something. They recognized this dog! Her markings along with her many achievements were well known. They had trialed dogs against this one before. They didn’t really care what a dog's coat looked like but they had always been impressed by this dog's atheism, self control, intelligence, and drive. And the dog had been so handler focused, ecstatic whenever the human praised her. They couldn’t ever imagine giving a dog like that up. Thinking back, they remembered her name and tried it out. “Venus?” The dog's ears perked but then immediately fell flat and looked even more dejected than before.

The last time she had heard her name, it was her humans saying it but they weren’t here anymore. They had left her. Usually this handler prefers to keep the old name. It can make the transition smoother and it's one less thing for ta dog to have to adjust to. But seeing this dogs reaction, they knew the name was a painful reminder and it was going to do more harm than good. They left the dog for the night, deciding to sleep on it.

They woke up the next morning to take care of the dogs. As they walked through the kitchen, their partner handed them a breakfast pastry. They always feel so much love when their partner cared for them in this way. Plus the soft warm pastries were always delicious. They were thinking of pastries when they walked into the new dog’s room and looked at the still canine. That’s when the name popped in their head. “Babka” Ear perked ever so slightly. They sat down next to the dog and with long gentle petting strokes began to explain the name. “It’s a tasty food. Your coat looks much like the chocolate swirled dough. It’s soft and sweet and cozy and brings people together. I think I could eat it all day.” they said with a smile because they could feel the dog relaxing with the petting and the steady voice.

For Babka, this was the most relaxed she had felt since the incident. She missed the attention from the humans. The human continued the motions and Babka realized she had never been pet like this before. It was usually a couple quick pats on the head or a quick butt scratch but not this long extended petting session. She quite enjoyed it and relaxed further. In the next few weeks, the human incorporated massage into the long petting sessions. As she felt her muscles loosen as they were worked, she began to feel the itch, the desire, to be active again. The human also started bringing a collie in with them. One a day, one of three individuals in general. Babka wasn’t sure what to say at first but soon learned she didn't have to initiate. One was gentle and let her take her time. Another was gregarious and a near constant stream of words poured out. The other was somewhere in between. Babka felt herself opening up and enjoying the company.

It was a long journey and not a linear one. While she progressed both mentally and physically, there were still bad days both mentally and physically. But her trust and bond with her new human grew strong as did her body. She slowly made many new friends on the ranch too, from canine to equid and many more. She had never been allowed so much interaction with so many others. At first she was shy and awkward. She low self worth combined with a lack of experience interacting with dogs older than tiny puppies made her feel like an outsider. But the dogs on the ranch weren’t giving up on her. There were a couple who were particularly good oath dogs like her. They could understand and relate to where she was coming from. She had a lot of growth from those relationships. From there she was able to branch out to others.

One day in particular always makes her blush and laugh in remembrance. She had been cleared to up the intensity as she trained so she was back on the agility course for the first time in a long time. She was going over the A frame when all of a sudden she heard a dog call out “No way! You’re Venus. You’re the canine sport superstar!” the young dog exclaimed. Her ear had drooped a bit hearing the old name. It was the first time since her first night on the ranch and she was surprised by the emotions it drug up. But she shook herself off and recovered. “It’s Babka now.” she said. “Oh, my bad! Sorry, Babka! I can’t believe I’m meeting you. You’re the new dog? OMG we live together! Can you teach me! Show me your ways!” the young male gushed. Babka left out a startled laugh. She hadn't met a fanboy before. “Well, I'm not up to my old speed yet but I’d be happy to help you with some things.” Soon, Babka was drawing crowds of collies who wanted to learn her ways. She found she really enjoyed teaching. Her pupils' enthusiasm was contagious. Their wins were her wins. And she was always there encouraging when things didn’t go to plan. She ended up being a fantastic teacher and mentor in many sports.

As she grew more confident and more social, Babka actually had less of a need to interact with others so much. One of the longest things to learn but also one of the most valuable; she learned to have worth on her own, outside of others. She treasured getting to have too many friends and she genuinely found a passion in teaching. But now she also enjoys quiet evening strolls alone. Or calm mornings resting on the porch in solitude. She rarely thinks about her past. Her mind is in the present. She feels much more comfortable in her own skin these days.

    Contest 11 is now closed!
It'll take me a while to check though everything (I'm in part way though moving) so hang fire for the final prize list :>

If you've made substantial progress on your entry but it isn't quite finished, send me a DM or "proof" you've already started and you can have an extended 24h to finish!
This isn't open to those who haven't started yet as I don't want people to be pressured trying to finish the long prompt in such a short amount of time

    Contest 11 Results

An "Ears-Tail-Fur" Edit Voucher has been awarded to all users with a completed entry. Congratulations, I can see how much hard work was put in to every single entry!
When using this prize, just state which round it was won from.

Kenjaku (it's so cool seeing his life layed out like that)
parsnip (obsessed with all the different expressions)
werepickle (what an interesting contrast of pre/post kennel)
      hypersomnia. (What a chilly adventure!)
ChristainAnimalLover (I'm loving that trio's story)
Black Dog Haunting (that's a really interesting concept)
Shadow17 (I love how that family keeps growing)
Baobabel (what a heartbreaking and heartwarming story)
Lierre (I can't get over how cute that was omg)
Wifflebee (it's so cool seeing her story visualised!

Additionally, a smooth/rough/curly T6 custom has been awarded at random between all completed entries. Congratulations Wifflebee!

The contest hall will be closed during the month of October to make way for fall festival activities!
I will post again here when reopened :>
