space Shuò carefully but coolly took stock of his surroundings as he emerged from the rift. The air here was notably different from his empire's air—sweeter, less polluted. The architecture was foreign to him, especially with its abundant amount of canals. The only danger here seemed to be bumping into a stranger who was too excited by the festivities to notice their immediate surroundings.
Yet, he could only sigh. Shuò was already anticipating the fact that his unexpected departure would cause some disturbance in the palace. He imagined his attendants knocking on the door of his office, waiting for his normal response for a time, and opening the door with some annoyance, and then shock. They would note the typical piles of documents that neatly sat on each side of their ruler's desk, the ink in the open well of his dip pen slowly becoming more concentrated, the light of the metal lamp on the desk becoming obsolete with the sun's ascent, and finally the empty space where his regal form should be. Could he have taken flight from a window to take a break from work? No, the emperor would not be so careless to leave the light on nor the inkwell open while he was gone, even if he was at his wits' end. They knew well how he delighted in maintained habits and minute details.
Upon ascertaining his absence, the attendants would be immediately making arrangements to hide their ruler's absence from the public. But they would hesitate in dividing the latter's overwhelming workload amongst themselves. If Shuò were home, perhaps he would be working from sunset to sunrise or vice versa—for a mere mortal, this would be reasonable cause for concern, but He, Shuò, was a god and an emperor. He could bear that much, and some more, if need be. A god should provide and protect his people, but a god emperor should strive for more.
Shuò did know he was too protective of his people at times, especially as he viewed them as children (or even pets), who he raised carefully, yet with some detachment. He also knew well how they faltered but never gave up. (He too was like that, minus the faltering—a god does not falter, for the people who watch him would take that as an example to follow.)
Even with his absence, they would adapt. An unexpected departure would not completely ruin what he had building over the past few hundred years. A brief vacation would be fine, his attendants could figure things out while he was gone. And if not, he'd return with a little more energy and knowledge to fix their silly blunders. Now, where would be the nearest library be located, so Shuò may educate himself on the magic of this world, inter-dimensional travel, and the festival this happy city clearly had its hands busy with?
