SamhainEntry:Slice of life human AU. tw loss of a loved one
The years have been kind to Halcyon. He remembers the hardship of his youth, the chaos of trying to stand out and make something of himself. He remembers the missed meals, the sleepless nights, the long grueling hours of work. Not everything is looked back on fondly, but the birth of his son is a particular highlight. He remembers holding him in his arms the night he was born – the night he lost the love of his life. He held him and promised his son a life that Halcyon had never had.
Being a single father wasn’t easy, but he did it with love and patience. Samhain wasn’t an easy kid – colicky as a baby who only seemed to sleep when on his father’s chest. Once he was old enough to walk around, he was always getting into trouble. Halcyon remembers putting up baby gates to corral him in one safe spot while he worked his remote job. Always juggling the baby and the phone. He remembers seeing him off to school for the first time and sobbing like a baby in the car after dropping him off. How could he leave his son? The one good thing in his life? He remembers Samhain toddling up to him at pickup, giddy seeing his father again.
“I promised you I’d be back,” he tells him, smoothing his unruly blonde and white hair while holding him close. Samhain makes a few pleasant noises and settles in his car seat for the drive home. Halcyon remembers the early days of trying to find life-work balance while being a single father. He remembers trying to find the time to spend every waking moment (and sleeping moment, too) with his wonderful son. Sometimes he isn’t the perfect dad, sometimes he falls short – but he loves his son, and Samhain could do no wrong in his father’s mind.
Samhain grew up fast,
so fast. It seemed like it was just yesterday Halcyon was seeing him off to that tearful first day of school, and now he was watching him graduate high school. He celebrates with his son, no; celebrates his son. Celebrates that he’s come so far and he’s become such a wonderful boy. Things weren’t always easy, but they made it through.
He sits at his wife’s gravesite, drinking her favourite drink. It’s a ritual he’s done for some years now. He tells her all about their son’s accomplishments, his acceptance into a fancy college. He pours a little bit of the orange soda out next to her grave – for her to enjoy, of course. He tells her how much he misses her, tells her how much she’s missed; how every day he wishes she were here and experiencing it with him. Finally, he thanks her, thanks her for what she gave him.
The sun has set now, and his tired body aches from the impending cold weather. A fleeting thought crosses his mind: how unfair to age alone, how unfair she didn’t get the opportunity. He tells her he loves her, closes his eyes and imagines a hug from her. Misty-eyed, Halcyon gets up from the bench and heads back to his car. Samhain is due home next month for the holidays. He can’t wait.
