Q: Do I need to answer prompts in order?
A: No! You can answer prompts in absolutely any order you feel like ^^

Q: Can I post multiple forms in one post?
A: Yes, absolutely! In fact, we'd encourage this to prevent spam. We do, however, ask that you limit yourself to about 5 prompts per post, to reduce staff workload and ensure your prompts aren't missed by mistake. We also discourage editing your post too far after initially posting it, as results are tallied by staff gradually and your edits may be missed.

Q: May I include decorative/supporting elements in my prompt that I didn't make myself?
A: In a small capacity, yes! Specifically, including existing song lyrics, poetry, etc. in your work when relevant is alright! Just be sure the work you're quoting is CS legal, provide credit, and subtract this from your word total. Dividers / decorative coding elements you didn't draw yourself are okay as well, but please ensure you have the right to use these images and credit them appropriately.

Q: What does "art/writing may not be reused" mean?
A: In short, if you're already submitted a piece of art/writing somewhere else in Stars, it can't be resubmitted for double credit! For example, a nursery prompt from an accepted nursery ticket can't be reused on a new ticket (or any other mechanic). Explore writing cannot be resubmitted to the quest board or prompts. Blurbs written for event participation can't be put into explore. Past quest board responses may not be reused in prompts, etc. and so on. If you did not submit a piece of past art/writing anywhere (e.g. character/lore profiles you filled out in your own time), you may submit it for credit here or elsewhere one time.

Q: What does account-locked mean?
A: Account-locked items cannot be traded/gifted between users! They are bound to the account that purchased them. When an account-locked item is applied to a cat (new or pre-existing), the cat becomes account-locked for a year from the date the edit is approved. This means that the cat cannot be traded/gifted for a full year.

Q: May I collab with another user on my prompt response?
A: Yes and no. Yes, you may work together with another user to make two separate -- but linked -- prompt responses. However, you cannot co-write/draw the same piece of writing/art together, as it becomes too difficult for staff to ensure both users met the minimum requirements and give you appropriate credit.

Q: What if a prompt doesn't fit my lore?
A: You're welcome to think outside the box a little! So long as your response is answering the prompt in a way which is honest to your lore, you can adjust it as needed. For instance, if your cats don't hunt but a prompt asks about hunting, think about other methods of food/energy collection. You're welcome to ask for help/advice from the community in finding a lore-relevant way of reading a prompt, too! If a prompt truly doesn't fit your lore at all, there are bonus prompts available you can use as substitutes to still complete a prompt category.

There are four categories of freeform prompts: scenes, writing, drawing, and crafts. These four prompt categories are a bit different than the sets from the previous page, as you're not meant to complete all of them! There are no milestone rewards to unlock, so there's nothing lost if something is outside your skill level or technology access.

These prompts are just for fun, and are intended to get you thinking about an art form/format in a creative way. You'll be rewarded exp and stardust for your time!

Scene prompts focus on written or drawn scenes like you may find in a book or comic, rather than summaries of events or lore. Writing prompts focus on creative ways to use text, with content limitations and unique formats. Drawing prompts encourage you to think outside the box with how you use artistic elements, and push you to draw something new. Craft prompts allow you to submit physical craft work such as jewelry, yarn work, and music for set exp and stardust rates.

Q: Can I answer the same prompt more than once?
A: Always! Just keep in mind that you cannot reuse content from a previous prompt submission or a different mechanic.

Q: Does it matter which Clan I answer a freeform prompt for?
A: Nope! As there are no milestone tiers to track, which Clan you use for a prompt doesn't matter.

Q: Are there content limitations on these prompts?
A: Yes! All prompt responses must relate to your lore or cats, use the correct media format (e.g. you can't draw for a writing prompt), and remain on-topic to the prompt at hand. For instance, using a scene prompt to submit an extended summary of your lore by just starting it with an on-topic scene and then derailing from the prompt will not qualify. Please stay true to the intent of the prompts; there will be other prompt sections in the future to submit other work!
Also obviously all content must be CS appropriate.

Q: Can I submit art for a writing prompt or writing for a drawing prompt?
A: No, writing/art done for the wrong category will not receive credit. However, feel free to tie your responses to drawing / writing prompts together in lore! For example, you might write an apology video script (writing prompt) and then draw the video's thumbnail for a drawing prompt. Some prompts have a direct companion in the other category (e.g. writing- and art-based social media post prompts) and may have this noted at the end of the prompt in case you'd like to expand your response to both mediums. Please be sure you're labeling things correctly for submission to make staff's jobs easier and ensure you get credit for your work ^^

Q: Can I get more exp for a crafts prompt I put extra effort into?
A: Short answer: no. Crafts categories are exceptionally difficult to scale exp for, and we don't intend to make detailed tiers for each category. The result is that the categories' exp values are estimated by a middle level of effort, and some larger work may end up receiving less exp than seems reasonable. Keep in mind that crafts should be done for the joy of the activity, not for the exp and stardust. If you choose to make something large and complex, do it because you enjoy the art! The Stars-based prizes and this category's existence are just a bonus.

Q: Will there be more prompts added?
A: Yes! Since there are no milestone tiers affected, more freeform prompts may be added to this list at a later date. If you need to reference previous versions of the lists (as the numbers prompts are assigned may change over time to keep the lists sorted nicely), please search PastFreeformPrompts on this thread!

Q: Who wrote these prompts?
A: These prompts were brainstormed by the admin and writer teams - in particular, Hazelfang, SkyWishes21, and I Like Bees! Also Knickknacks contributed one. Community-contributed prompts from events such as this one have been added by changeling., PeepinBones, and River Song!

Scene prompts must be answered in the form of a written or drawn scene, where events are actively happening, rather than a summary of lore/etc. Think what you'd find if you picked up your average fiction novel. They're meant to encourage working on writing or drawing a story, actions, and characterization. For art, focus on drawing action/movement, expressions, and character interaction; backgrounds are encouraged.

Scene prompts may be very similar to prompts on the quest board at times! If one of these prompts is actively on the quest board, I'd encourage you to answer there instead for more stardust and a chance at better prizes ^^

Writing Limitations

1. … in a second-person point of view.
2. … in first-person point of view (using I/me pronouns), but the first-person narrator cannot be a cat (or whatever species your cats are in lore).
3. … in first-person plural point of view, where the narrator is a collective of characters using we/us rather than an individual using I/me. This perspective can offer a lot of unique opportunities to represent unity and shared struggle, and I'd encourage doing some research on interesting ways to use it!
4. … using only dialogue.
5. … without any punctuation whatsoever, only words and spaces.

6. … without ever using at least one of these letters: A, O, I, U, H, T, R, or S. You must state which letter you are excluding. This prompt has a minimum of 200 words to ensure a challenge.
7. … strong imagery that focuses only on one sense (sight, sound, hearing, taste, or smell).
8. … a story told in the opposite sequence of events (starting with the end and working backwards).
9. … in Shakespearean English.
10. … in Yoda-speak.

11. … with as much CS-appropriate meme language and references as you can possibly add.

Formatting

14. … a two sentence horror story - appropriate for CS. This prompt always receives 10 exp.
15. … a to-do or grocery list for one of your cats. You may include any additional notes present on the sidelines of the paper as well!
16. … a flowchart. This can include branching paths, common symbols for the meaning of different text boxes, etc. Feel free to upload an image of your work instead if relevant, but please be sure to include a word count!
17. … a PowerPoint / slideshow presentation. You're welcome to use a slideshow program for this and include a link to or photos of your work. Please credit images and ensure that you have the right to use them. If including your own art, note that it won't receive exp unless submitted for a different prompt (since this is a writing prompt).
18. … a short research paper, including at least two MLA formatted sources. Your sources can be fictional. Sources don't count towards word count, so this prompt always receives +5 exp for the sources.

1. … one of your cats as another species that they are not canonically in your lore. (That is, if your cats are humans in your lore, then drawing them as humans won't count - try something totally new [and still not a cat] instead!)
2. … your cat with emphasis on a notable fur texture or style, especially if it's something not present on their ref. For example, soggy wet fur, very curly fur, human hair styles, etc.
3. … a piece which only shows a small portion of a cat (e.g. their eye, paw, nose, tail, etc.).
4. … some distinct emotions and expressions on your cats! What emotions you use are your choice, but please label them. Here are some ideas to get you started: angry, sad, confused, distracted, excited, frustrated, bored, frightened, happy.
5. … a human outfit for your cat. (If your art is only the outfit and no cat is included, exp will be awarded by lined vs. sketched + color vs. not.)

Artistic Limitations

19. … a piece using only one continuous line, without lifting your pen (or, if you do lift the pen, return to exactly where you left off with no gap).

20. … using only geometric shapes (e.g. triangles, circles, squares, rectangles, etc.). Feel free to complete this prompt using preset shapes in an art program, Google Slides / PowerPoint, etc.
21. … a piece of your cat(s) using only shades of the same color (e.g. all shades of blue, or all black/gray/white, etc.).
22. … a piece using only colors from a randomly generated palette, ideally of about 5-6 colors. Here's one generator you can use!
23. … a piece with grayscale mode enabled on your device, so you don't know what colors you're picking from. In the spirit of the challenge, please don't colorpick off your cats' refs for this! (Most devices should have color mode settings you can use for this! Either search your device's settings menu or search your device's model online to find instructions.)
24. … a piece manually colored using the opposite colors (e.g. black turns white, orange turns purple, etc.). In the spirit of this challenge, please pick your colors by hand rather than using a color inversion tool. You're welcome to look up a color wheel to help!

25. … in an awkwardly limited space. For this prompt, start by scribbling some blocks/blobs onto your canvas at random. Then, draw by only using the unfilled space [example]. This could be a good opportunity to practice some abstract posing! Feel free to incorporate the forced black/empty space into the work.
26. … on a 100x100 size canvas.
27. … a piece which incorporates this squiggle. As part of the challenge, the squiggle itself cannot be edited/changed. More squiggle starters will be available later!

Media Types

43. … traditionally, on paper with pencil, pen, or other drawing materials.
44. Paint a piece, using physical paints rather than digital. Any paint type is valid!
45. … a signature or brief handwriting sample for one of your cats. This prompt always receives 5 exp.

Crafts prompts are answered with physical crafts and materials less conventionally used for answering prompts - such as origami, yarn, or clay works. If a physical craft is more comparable to a drawing, just done traditionally instead of digitally (e.g. a painting or traditional pen/paper art), please feel free to use that medium to answer regular drawing prompts instead! This category is meant to catch mediums that are difficult to award exp for or substantially different from or more effort than usual - both to reward you for these types of art, and to encourage you to try something new!

Craft prompts must show reasonable effort and purpose to be accepted. Low-effort, "grindy"/"farming", or rushed works may not receive rewards. Unacceptable submissions may include: simply tying a string in a loop as a bracelet, a 3-piece Lego cat, or anything premade which you did not create yourself. As with other freeform prompts, crafts prompts must still be of your cats or relevant to your lore. If it may be difficult for staff to discern the relevance of your piece, please briefly explain in your prompt submission!

When submitting a craft prompt, the category your craft falls into is the "prompt" you're responding to! Crafts are grouped generally by material and receive set exp within each category, as it would be too complicated to make an exp scale for every material type. Unlike other freeform prompts, stardust is awarded at 1 exp = 2 stardust (quest board rate) since the quest board isn't meant to accommodate crafts.

Please be sure to credit patterns, tutorials, recipes, etc. that you've used to help create your works!

Heavy Materials

This category includes woodworking, glass work, metal, leather, stone, and other "heavier" and likely more expensive and difficult to work with materials. Specifically, this category covers manipulation of these materials into a new form (e.g. glassblowing, stone carving, etc.). It does not include simply using that material as a canvas (e.g. drawing on a rock or piece of wood), a partial piece of the work (e.g. gluing glass eyes onto something else), using unaltered pieces as the medium (e.g. arranging stones in the shape of a cat), etc.
Jewelry does not go here for simply using these materials (please check out the jewelry category!), but you can sort it here if it required significant manipulation of these materials (e.g. carving a ring out of wood rather than using wooden beads; forging metal instead of bending small wires).

Clay and Other Soft Sculpting Materials

This category includes working with clay, play-dough, sand, and other moldable materials that can be used to create sculpted work.

Experience: 70 exp

Yarn, Thread, and Fabric

This category includes crocheting, knitting, sewing, embroidery, cross-stitching, and other crafts that focus on fabric and string. Jewelry does not go here even if it uses these materials; please submit jewelry to the jewelry category!

Experience: 65 exp

Paper Crafts

This category includes crafts which focus on folding, cutting, or otherwise creatively arranging paper. Simply drawing on paper does not qualify. Mediums may include origami, papercutting, collages, paper lanterns, ransom notes, etc.

Jewelry

This category includes all forms of jewelry - pieces made from various materials and intended to be worn and ornamental. Materials may include anything from string, beads, Rainbow Loom, metal, etc.

Bead, Brick, and other Small Piece Works

This category includes art where the focus is on taking smaller, premade bead/brick/other pieces, and combining them into a meaningful whole. Typical mediums may include Minecraft builds, Lego bricks, Perler beads, and mosaic works.

Experience: 45 exp

Repaints/Recolors

This category includes recoloring an existing 3D product/figurine that you did not make yourself to resemble one of your cats or something relevant to your lore. For example, painting over a Littlest Pet Shop figure to turn them into one of your own Stars cats qualifies.

Experience: 35 exp

Food Art

This category includes art which uses food as a medium (e.g. a fruit sculpture, cookies baked into the shape of a character, a cake frosted to look like your cat, etc.). Prompt submissions here require that the food have been made by yourself (with assistance is fine!), not made by someone else or simply drawing on a piece of fruit. Food art must also be artistic in nature, not simply a dish cooked that's somehow relevant to your lore.

Experience: 30 exp*
*If baking a batch of food (e.g. cookies or cupcakes) and then decorating each individually, each uniquely decorated item past the first will earn +10 exp, since the decoration is new but the base was made in bulk. Please clarify in your post if this is the case!

Music

Per CS rules, music submissions cannot include vocals/voice. This category is for musical pieces created by yourself, with relevance to either your cats or world/lore. It does not include mashups or remixes of existing music, art or animation attached to existing music (PMV/AMV), playing an existing song on your own instrument, etc.
