Even ..though.. I'll ne/ver know what's[?] up ahead,
I'm never letting --- go, I'm never letting go....

"Let me go! Let me go!"
Just outside my cage door there were grunts, both from man and from animal. I opened my eyes groggily and lifted my so I could see what was causing all the noise. The men were carrying a dog down the isle, one holding her waist while the other held her neck and chest. A noisy snort passed through my nostrils and I laid my head back on my paws.
I was one of the only ones that didn't have to share a cage. I was getting along just fine by myself too. No having to share food, no worrying about being attacked in my sleep, no--click! I froze, my green eyes wide in shock at the human at my cage door. It swung open and the dog was tossed in. Just as quickly as the door had opened, it was closed again.
The figure stood up and looked towards me. Her tail was tucked, ears were back, body was shaking, and those odd yellow-green eyes gazed at me in fear.
"Please don't go here. They just cleaned the cages." I said, sounding uninterested as I laid my head back down. She blinked and backed up into the corner, whining softly through her nostrils.
"No no no. This can't be happening. I can't be here!" She cried, cringing against the cold wall. I exhaled a sigh, turned my head towards her, keeping my bored face on. "Just relax."
She nodded once, twice, three times, then slowly lowered herself onto the floor and curled up into a ball. "I didn't do anything wrong. I was just looking for food, I..I--" Another whine came from her.
I forced my eyes closed and exhaled steadily. This was why I didn't want a cage mate. It isn't fun having to deal with another animal's drama. I didn't even deal with my own. I sort of already decided that I was going to die here. I accepted it to. Only the pretty dogs get adopted. Not a mutt like me. One eye peeked open and I found myself staring at her.
She would be gone soon. I should tell her that so she would stop crying. I mean, her eyes would attract anyone's attention. They were so bright. And her coat, so soft, that blend of colors. Even in the darkness she looked... Wait. I blinked and snapped my eyes from her. She would be gone soon, I repeated in my head. I can't get attached. Her eyes aren't that pretty. Her fur might not be as soft as it looks. I once again caught myself staring.
Stop it!
I let out an irritated growl, making her jump up, eyes wide on me. I shook my head once and she curled back, her eyes watching me warily. I dropped my gaze and stayed in my frozen position until the barks and howls died down in the background. Sleep fell over the creatures of this prison. Over everyone. Everyone but me. I soundlessly got to my paws and padded towards the cage door. My nails scratched noisily against the cement floor. I poked my muzzle in between two bars and stared blankly up at the ceiling. That's where the moon should be. My heart ached. I dropped down so I was sitting and flattened my ears to my head. A small, soft, almost silently howl passed my lips. I missed home. I had a kid, a sweet boy who I followed everywhere. I lived on a barn. I could nap on the porch, chase chickens all day, swim in the lake, and end my busy day by laying at my boy's feet in his bed and closing my eyes.
My life was perfect. I didn't do anything wrong. What did I do to deserve this?
The words that are going through every sleeping mind in this cold place. I try to be strong and think that everything will be okay. The boy will come back. He'll put my faded green collar on me once again and I'll never have to be locked up in a cage ever again. I'd be free.
Tears formed in my eyes.
Who was I kidding? I was stuck here forever. I would be here until the day I lay my head down and close my eyes for the last time. I would never leave this please. Never never never never...
"It's okay." I heard a voice from behind me. I turned the other way and blinked the tears from my eyes.
"No." My voice was raspy and low. "For you. But not for me." I heard her footsteps, then the soft rustling of her fur. My breath was right next to me.
"Why do you say that?" She asked, trying the best to meet my eyes. I wouldn't let her. She couldn't see the pain I was in, no one can.
"Because I'm an ugly mutt. You're the perfect pet. People want you. People don't want me." I scratched my claws against the hard ground.
"People want you." She defended. I laughed humorlessly and shook my head.
"If people wanted me, I wouldn't be here."
"Neither would I." I laughed again at her words. This time it had a little more feeling. She cracked a small smile and tried again to meet my eyes. I looked at her with one and she smiled a bit more. "Why are people so mean?" She asked, cocking her head.
I couldn't answer that question. Maybe it was in their blood to be cruel to anything lower than them. I decided to change the subject. "What's your name?" I asked, turning my head a little bit more towards her.
"Elizah." She didn't even hesitate. She smiled and her ears twitched. "What's yours?"
The corner of my mouth quircked up in a half smile. "I'm Bailey."
"Well," Elizah moved a little closer. "I think you and I are going to get along real nicely, Bailey."

I posted this back in February. Almost like the second gen of this month.![]()
Reposted because I have the sequel coming up soon! Might seem weird if I randomly posted the ending to a post that was no longer on this thread.
