Short story: Lost

The sun was high in the sky as Seven trotted through the grounds of the Blue Ridge Club’s spring dog competitions. The day was warm, the air filled with the sounds of barking mixed with the singing of birds. Delicate winds carried scents of spring and the excitement of the upcoming rivalry. He should have been relaxing and enjoying himself, but something tugged at his instincts. Seven was a seasoned police dog with years of experience in the force, specializing in search and rescue. Though today he was off-duty, he remained alert and his instincts told him something was off behind the idyllic façade of the event.

His sharp eyes scanned the crowds until he noticed a shepherd sitting at a distance, ears slightly drooped, eyes searching every face that passed, her expression soft but unsettled. “Everything alright?” Seven asked gently, walking over and sitting beside her. The other shepherd, a kind-looking female with intelligent eyes, responded while keeping her gaze on the passing humans. “Well, no, not exactly. I can’t find my owner.”

Seven tilted his head and listened, encouraging her to continue.

“Last night, I was put in a crate inside a car. There were lots of other crates with other dogs. Honestly, it was great—much better than travelling alone. But it’s been hours since we arrived, and I haven’t seen my owner. I can’t even smell their scent in the air.”

Seven twitched an ear thoughtfully. “What about the other dogs you travelled with? Have they seen your owner? Do they often leave you alone like this?”

His companion shook her head. “No. And I don’t know any of the other dogs. We’ve just met.”

There was something strange in her tale. A trip without her owner, accompanied by unfamiliar dogs, wasn’t something that normally happened. Sasha might have thought she was simply lost, but Seven began to suspect something more troubling. She might have been dognapped. “Don’t worry. I’ll help you find your owner.” Seven gave her a soft, reassuring smile, not wanting to alarm her, but instead help her calm down. His police-trained mind was already forming a plan, his nose twitching for clues. It looked like he’d be starting a case on his day off.
