A pile of furballs, several of them of all sizes, colors, and shapes. All young kittens huddled together. The ground beneath them was that of cloth. Several scraps of it in varying colors. A roof above them was made of twigs, and a blanket covered even that over the top. One of the kittens was very different from the others. Stood out like a sore thumb. While pale as many points are when they are that young, and bright blue eyes adorning their face, this little girl had extra floof sticking out of her back that wasn't typical of any feline. She could even wiggle them and it her whirl with excitement. The other's however seemed to disapprove of this difference, and had avoided her by pushing her away from them in many instances.
So, lonely as she was, she stumbled out of the nest to fumble into a large feline. As she fell over, stumbling about with a lack of coordination the kitten looked up in admiration of what she hoped to be when she was older. A smile was given back to her, as she was promptly picked up, and brought back into the nest.
At first, the young girl twisted and defied this. Angry to be belittled, and denied her adventures, but the truth was is it wasn't safe for someone her age. It was good that the elder had stopped her, but she quelled her fury when they found that the adult was staying with them all, and whistled to get their attention.
"I'll be the nurturer watching over you lot today." This cat seemed so soothing, a motherly voice that had grabbed the attention of every face in the den. "I wish to tell you a story."
"A story?!" One of the others stumbled forward.
She nodded in response. "Yes, about this one here, and why she is so special. I hope it helps you all treat her, and others who are different a little better." This gave Eclipse, the special kitten a large smile. "Are you all ready?"
They all nodded, sitting politely in proper positions around the nurturer, ready to be quiet and attentive. It was clear that this was a normal activity that these young ones partook in, no matter who was watching them, or how many was there.
"All right, where should I begin?" She tipped her head up in thought as she recalled the tale. After a moment, she took a breath and started at the place that all knew it had to start. The beginning.
