How to tell which animal a pet is 🤔

Heya, I was just told that monkeys are chameleons and some other pets might look like e.g. a cat but be a butterfly wolf and my brain is spinning 😵‍💫 how am I supposed to know what a pet is? And especially what an egg is?

I'm pretty new so any advice is appreciated!

there's an option to filter the archive to certain species (but it shows you the whole litter) so maybe take a look there if you're uncertain about what a pet is

and as for the eggs,
Chameleon Egg
Snake Egg
Macaw egg
Western Dragon
Eastern Dragon
Chicken

it's mostly chickens and Eastern dragons that can be more difficult to distinguish at time, but the others you can usually tell apart

Familiarize yourself with the unedited linearts and then look for the pose. It can be real tricky to figure out what the original lineart is for some edited pets but they typically (but not always) share the same pose.

Like these pigs are edited PPS cats:

Notice especially how the legs of the pig are all in the same position of the cat's legs.

And when you then have an idea for what species it is, look it up in the archive. In this case, filter by cat and you'll find the pigs show up too, that means they're actually cats.

A few other examples:

This hedgehog lineart is a syrian hamster. Again notice the legs and the general pose.


Adult cows are ponies. Again the legs.

And then a real tricky one, the dimetrodon!

Believe it or not but that's a rat! Essentially the only thing they have in common is the short stature and the overall body shape.

And like I said, the archive has the answers. If you filter by the species you think it is and it doesn't show up, then that's not the real species. If it does show up, then that's the real species.

No, monkeys and chameleons are not the same - they were drawn with similar poses and released together, but they are not edited lines of each other.

I do understand why it does seem that way with how wild some edits are =)

No, monkeys and chameleons are not the same - they were drawn with similar poses and released together, but they are not edited lines of each other.

Oh no, the original set of monkeys absolutely were edited chameleons!
Proof.
Chameleons were released in 2015 and then edited to look like monkeys for the Lunar New year of 2016.


You can also just see they don't just have similar poses, it's the exact same pose.

No idea when or why monkeys were made an official species, though. However I think cows deserve the same treatment.

Granted, my memory was faulty with the release, that's on me.
But it has come up enough times within staff conversation that I know they were not 'edited chameleons', but deliberately made to be similar (or in other words, with the exact same pose). Which is also why they are their own species in the archive, but the cows or other edits are not.

I did a little digging and they absolutely did start out as "just edited" chameleons but Berkshire, the artist, wanted them to be a permanent lineart and thus developed growing stages for them (who are different to the growing stages of the chameleon). They did try to repose them but wasn't satisfied with it so they stuck to the original "edited chameleon" lines.

They say they "modified the chameleon line" right here. And they talk about failing to repose them here.

So the monkeys became their own standalone species as of April 2016 (and are therefore no longer edited chameleons, monkeys are just monkeys) but as far as I can tell, the LNY 2016 monkeys were just chameleons until then.

Wow! I had gone all this time assuming the monkeys were edited chameleons, but now that I've gone and overlaid them they definitely aren't:

While they're definitely in very similar poses, the legs and tails don't actually line up very well. Not even the branches line up perfectly, when I would assume they would if they were just a heavy lineart edit (it's hard to tell on this image, but trust me, the cham's branch is a bit skinnier lol). I would believe the monkey lineart was traced from the chameleon lines, but it's definitely isn't just a heavy lineart edit. Huh!
