April Fools' Toggle

Because I'm salty over there being no joke this year, (I mean, there's the hat, but that's it), what if CS implemented a filter/toggle of sorts that would let the sensitive users turn the pranks off, so they can still happen for the rest of us? It's what Flight Rising did, and that seems to work just fine. It's just no fun to have half the gimmick of the day completely gone for everyone. It would be the best of both worlds to be able to opt in or out, and there's literally nothing to lose by making this an option.

I was just thinking about this! A toggle would be perfect, then people could enjoy either experiencing or not experiencing the silliness.

Not to be that person but this really bothers me, as not only have I never seen users complain about April fools pranks hindering accessibility (unless in private dms with staff perhaps), but other accessibility related features that users have been requesting for a long time have gone completely unaddressed (ex. Turning off client side text formatting or ways to censor phobia inducing pets)

Like, these feel like more pressing things than removing an entire single-day celebration for all users, but maybe that’s just me

Support! idk how Flight Rising does it, so I don't have that as a reference, but: The toggle would need to be a permanent setting, since if April Fool's Day pranks are toggled on by default, we still have an issue there (and that'll still be an issue when the toggle is added in the first place as well as for new users), and if they're toggled off by default, I would imagine that kinda defeats the purpose of doing anything for this in the first place (even though conceptually speaking, they ought to be toggled off by default, because April Fool's Day pranks should really be opt-in, not opt-out). hello compromise made of concessions and losses, my old friend

People have definitely been publicly posting feedback about how the April Fool's Day pranks negatively affect them for years and years and years. Sometimes it was confined to the April Discussion Threads, other times it resulted in entirely separate threads being made in this board or the old pre-separation Help and Suggestions board. Some of that feedback has even been responded to by staff making posts. Search my posts for "april" if you'd like to see some of the public April Fool's Day feedback in 2021 (upside-down year, this one was a nightmare) and 2017 (grayscale year, also a nightmare) in particular

That makes sense. Reading back on it, my first post comes across as kinda accusatory, I think I was just upset about the lack of celebrations and let my emotions fuel my writing a little too much. I can 100% see how things like the upside down website and the like could be an absolute nightmare, I honestly forgot about that entirely, my mind was more on the pranks that changed the site banner and appearances of pets. Either way, a toggle would certainly be the best of both worlds for all users :)

Though now that I think about it, if such a thing was implemented it might be wise to announce it on the front page earlier than the day itself, perhaps even at the start of the previous month, so users who don’t log in as frequently/only log on to adopt pets can opt out early

That totally makes sense! Even as someone who was negatively affected by some of the pranks in previous years, I instinctively went "aww" when I saw there were just the pets and items this year haha.

Yeah, agreed on when to announce the toggle if it's implemented--I was thinking the same thing.

Flight Rising also reminded their users on their front page about the toggle a few days before April 1st, so it would probably be wise to include that with or before the event teaser or something
