what does it mean if a profile comes up like this when i click on it? i can see their posts on forums perfectly fine, it's only when i then click their username that this shows up

This means that the user has blocked you. If you're ever unsure, there's a system account set up with everyone on their blocked list, so you can compare how the profile looks.

The block function means that you won't be able to see the details on their profile or send them trade offers or PMs (depending on their settings). In certain forums you also won't be able to post on topics that they started.
