🌿 a guide to the flora of faerendell 🌿

✿ moonshade orchid { orchis lunaflora } — the moonshade orchid is a rare and delicate flower found only in the lumengrove, where it blooms under the light of the moon. it's petals are a deep purple fringed with silver, giving off an otherworldly glow in the night. the orchid thrives in the shaded understory of the forest, and is used as a symbol for mystery and hidden truths—some fables tell of the orchid’s ability to act as a truth serum when brewed in tea. it is revered for its mystical properties, and it's unique combination of beauty and power make it a treasured component of faerendell’s native flora.

✿ glimmerveil moss { muscus stellarum } — glimmerveil moss is a bioluminescent moss that thrives within the wyrmwood. its pale blue-green fronds emit a soft glow, casting a gentle light on the forest floor beneath the thick canopy of trees. while it is most common in the wyrmwood, it can be found in cool, dark environments throughout faerendell, growing in thick carpets that shimmer when disturbed. known for its soothing properties, glimmerveil moss is said to bring vivid dreams to those who place it beneath their pillow. it is often used in healing rituals, where it is placed around sick fables to bring rest and good health.

✿ wintercrest fern { filix glacialis } — the wintercrest fern is found at low altitudes in faerendell's northwestern reaches. it's fronds are a deep green, curling in intricate patterns that imitate the delicate symmetry of snowflakes. these ferns are capable of thermogenesis, often resulting in snow and ice melting away around them, providing a refuge for insects and small creatures. culturally, the wintercrest fern symbolizes fortitude and resilience. it is said to have protective qualities, with stories told of its ability to shield travellers from the cold or act as a good luck charm.

fable: sylvaine
entry: [257 words]

✦ a knit scarf from pomona — thick, soft, and carefully made, this scarf is something sylvaine wears daily, both for the practical warmth it provides and as a reminder of where she comes from. she adjusts it absentmindedly whenever she's nervous or deep in thought, and it carries the faintest scent of the orchard—apples and earth. this scarf remains one of her most prized possessions, a piece of warmth and love she carries with her no matter how far from home she travels.

✦ a well-worn notebook — both a personal journal and a notebook used for her studies, it's filled with careful notes, neat diagrams, and scrawled rambles alike. she tucks pressed flowers and leaves between the pages—a petal from a wildflower she saw blooming beside her dorm, a leaf she found while walking to class, a tiny sprig of rosemary she picked during a quiet moment by lake omyhr—each holding memories. it is a place where she can hold on to pieces of her past while charting her path forward.

✦ a lucky feather from one of her birds — sylvaine's hobby of aviculture has always brought her a sense of peace. she found this particular feather—small, soft and iridescent—just when she needed a reminder that things would be okay. she keeps it tucked carefully in her everyday bag, a small token of luck that she brings with her wherever she goes. whenever doubt creeps in or she feels unsure, it serves as a gentle reminder that everything, in time, will fall into place.

fable: Jules
entry:

"If you are going to keep pestering me about it I might as well show you.", Jules huffs as he moves his medical bag from his shoulder to his lap, eyeing Bishop with a half serious pout. Said navigator was sitting perched on the edge of the medical table, long legs mere inches from touching the ground but feet swinging back and forth none the less. Bishop leaned his upper body back, putting the weight of it on his arms. His expression bore a challenge, something Jules, was growing fonder of.

Jules pulls out all of his medical supplies first. Things that one would expect to be in a doctor's bag. A pristine black and silver stethoscope, a suturing kit, multiple rolls of white bandages, matches (for lighting candles or lanterns, he explained), and a notebook. The notebook that Bishop bought him on a whim one of the times they docked in a market town. He feels his chest tighten as he sees its been used. Pen almost out of ink and pages fraying at the edges as they have started to stick out of the leather binding.

Then, Jules pulls out a photo and hands it to him. He runs his fingers over the film and smile quirks at the edge of his lips. It was of a slightly younger Jules dressed in a lab coat and smiling excitedly as he shakes the hand of a much older and strange looking man.

"My advisor...this was after my first exam.", Jules looks at the photo fondly. "We spent nearly every day of the next 8 years together, I miss him terribly. Once we return to Doveport, I intent on making my way into Penrith to advise him of my time on the ship with you all."

Bishop opened his mouth to say something, but really, what could he add? He didn't realize Jules was homesick and it made him think he wasn't watching him carefully enough, didn't know him really as well as he thought he did. Which, became even more true when Jules pulled a huge, off white stick of-

"Stars above Jules is that a bone?!", Bishop was no longer leaning back on his hands but very much ready to run out of the office in terror.

The surgeon shrugged like this was somehow a very normal thing to have on your person, basically at all times.

"Yeah its a femur! I got permission to keep it from the patient of course. It's important to me, it's from my first amputation!", Jules explains, like a kid on Christmas. (431)

prompt: world - writing
entry:
Of the creatures inhabiting the vast and diverse world of magic, none are as unique and varied as faefolk. The faeries may take practically any form, from a simple bolt of magical energy known as wisps to most peculiar insect-plant amalgamations that are meadow faeries, these elemental beings are found in every corner of the known lands, be it the glittering ice-jumpers at the top of the coldest glaciers of far north or the magmatic dwellers of hottest volcanic fields of distant south, everywhere a type of fairy fitting perfectly to this environment may be found. Their strong connection to magic and the elements allows them to achieve perfect adaptation to whatever lands they live in. Most fairies are shy beings steering clear of company of other critters, using mimicry to hide and coming out only during the right conditions - moon fairies being the prime example, coming out only during moonlight-filled nights and spooking easily at any attempts to approach. Some, however, are more agressive and can be found in plain sight - but be wary of such species, as like with the non-magical animals, they often sport dangerous defensive mechanisms, like painful stingers of hornet fairies, deadly poisons of bog walkers, or magic capable of delivering serious damage to those who would disturb them. Like with their appearance, the intelligence of faefolk varies vastly from fully sentient tribes to animalistic beings driven by nothing but instinct. Many attempts at domesticating non-sentient species of fairies have been made, but their extreme dependance on their element to be present in their vicinity makes some of them a challange to keep, for how would one give volcanic fairy enough heat for comfortable life, or provide the meadow fairy with sufficient flower nectar to feed on? But even these challangers do not stop fairy enthusiasts from attempting to keep these fascinating creatures as companions.

fable: Lockhart
entry:
Lockhart's most precious possession is of course his beloved scarf, that he is seen wearing at all times. The scarf is both his cloak and his banner, and while it might look like something small, its very important to him as it was given to him by a very dear friend, who's sadly no longer with him. The cloth is silky to the touch and smells faintly of perfume, a scent that Lockhart renews once in a while to make sure his favorite fragrance is always there for him. No one knows the exact perfume he's using as the bottle has no labels on it, but the scent is mixed between fruit and flower aroma.
His second most treasured possession is a very fine comb, made from expensive sort of wood and polished so well to remain shiny even after years of use. Lockhart very much cares about his fur and combs his neck thoroughly every morning to prevent it from ever getting twisted or matted, and the material and quality of the tools he grooms himself with are extremely important as static electricity building is a big problem for his dense pelt, and using a cheap brush would make him sparkle like a storm cloud.
Lockhart's third favorite possession is his journal, which he always keeps in precise order and writes down all of the important events of the day, filling in the date and keeping paragraphs the right length so his diary is always easy and comfortable to read. And with that, he never writes anything that could offend other fables in there, so he can without hesitation let someone read his journal, it can be a valuable source of information about what happened some while ago.

    entry: 363/250
Excerpts from A Guide to Cindara wrote:
    Fauna
    Fire Jacks
The mountainous territory is home to many creatures, some more common than others. A common quarry in hunting are the jackalopes - rabbits with antlers whose tails seem to always be encompassed in a small ball of fire. This fire does not burn the surrounding areas and seems to dim when the jacks are sleeping. They forage for their food, eating mostly vegetation, but I have witnessed them snacking on the occasional insect.

    Flora
    Solar Lilies
Dotted throughout the territory are clusters of thick green stems, topped with a brilliant orange blossom. It has 5 petals, each wide at the base and narrowing towards the tip. They are lightly speckled sometimes, and their shades of orange may vary. At night, charged by the light of the sun, these lilies light up like candles from the center. Some small settlements use these in place of traditional lanterns. Their scent is sweet, but light. On warm summer nights, it hangs in the air.

    Asters
Another flower native to the Cindaran territory are asters. These smaller purple blooms grow in small mounds. They have a multitude of petals with a yellow center. Fables are known here to spread their seeds around the outside perimeter of their homes in early spring, claiming the flower brings luck and good fortune.

    Aspen Tree
This tree is one of the most populous in the region. It has a yellow-green leaf through the warmer months before turning a golden yellow in the fall. The bark is near white with black/brown mottling. They are quite tall trees, especially the deeper into the sacred wood you go. Under Aspens, healers tend their beds of rare herbs, the branches providing protection from harsher elements. There is a legend that during a blood moon, the knots and mottling on the trees transform into watchful eyes, as if the forest is on alert for some sort of danger.

    Geography
    Streams of Light
Winding through the hills are a multitude of streams that are filled with stones, smooth and round from their lifetime being shaped by water. The streams within the sacred wood seem to glow from within at night. In reality, the stones in these particular streams are littered at the bottom with glowing pebbles.

    fable: Sanni
    entry: 390/250
    Sanni's Prized Possessions wrote:
    Letters from Her Sister
Since her sister’s passing, Sanni has treasured the letters the two have exchanged since childhood. Even when they were living under the same roof, the two young Fables would slide letters under each other’s door, babbling on about this and that. Whenever they got into a fight during their teen years, the two sister’s wolud find their way back to each other with the written word. With her older sister now gone, Sanni finds herself rereading their letters from time to time, finding a sliver of her sister within their pages again.

    Nonna’s Healer Apprentice Pin
When Sanni decide to take up the healer’s path as a child, her nonna passed on to her younger granddaughter the pin of an exploding star. Sanni would wear this pin all the time in her younger years, even when her training had barely begun. It was pride that she held, to be part of something so great and larger than herself.

    Old Book of Fairytales
Before Sanni’s parents passed away, they would take turns each night reading from the family book of fairytales to their two daughters. The book was not one that had truly been published, but really a conglomeration of many oral histories passed down. Some long ago relative had taken it upon themselves to scrap together a binding and pages, resulting in the oddity Sanni now treasured. Her nonna, parents, sister, and other in the community had all made additional contributions to it, continuing the telling of their stories.

    Her Favorite Pen
Like any obsessed with the written word, Sanni has her preferred tool to write with. She has an old fountain pen that she discovered in an old desk of her family’s house. It had obviously been discarded in favor of the more modern implements, but Sanni finds entertainment and beauty in the antiquity. Admittedly she does opt for the more convenient options for the day to day, but when writing in her own personal journal, Sanni always uses it.

    Dragon Scales
When out on her herb foraging trips, Sanni entertains herself by trying to spot iridescent dragon scales. They are quite sparse in the region now, most dragons being reclusive and sticking to their high altitude homes in the mountains. Sanni hopes to one day make a a breastplate for Taejin out of them.

Featherwings
Lethocerus Pinnae
Small bugs that resemble the soft white down of a swan, living delicately upon the surface of waters. They are mostly found adrift on rivers, depending on the current to travel and feed from various algae and bacteria. In the spring season, they leave the gentle waters to breed on land, feathering dozens of tree trunks. A gentle species, some travel to new waters on the backs of squirrels and badgers. If sighted, they are seen as a blessing of abundance and gentle days.

Scorchweed
Vitaceae Adurere
Not a weed but in fact a trailing vine, first appearing after the cataclysm in the worst affected areas. Growing from ash, this dark plant withers and drains small amounts of energy to sustain itself. Commonly found tangling around husked trees with wide leaves. Once every century they blossom violent, the flowering ripping itself from the very stem itself, blooming from the inside out. Their meagre fruit attracts husked duskwing orioles to gather their seeds and spread them further.
Long debated is their classification; some scholars regard the plant as living and fauna, but others contest it remain flora.

Marsh gems
Celadon Moorite
If you're lucky, you might stumble across a treasure on your journey. Found exclusively in bogged, rainwater-fed moors, these stones are a modest green hue and are often found in unique, strange shapes that could only have been achieved through carving, yet have no evidence of external modification. These stones are largely regarded as good-luck charms, kept on one's person to stave off the clawing darkness and protect from the wandering hands of evil.

Buttongrass
Vallisterae
A seasonal seagrass that grows underwater, long and thin stalks full of oxygen and nutrients sustain mammals and coral alike. As autumn transitions to winter, these tubular grasses float to the top of the water's surface and remain vertically set above, stabilized only by a round disk of crystshell. To hold one of these blades with the shell base in your hand is disorienting, as these plants are virtually weightless. The effect they produce in the transitional season is still under study, however some report vivid dreams upon consuming a winter buttongrass blade.

Kenneth, Haze, and Mikhail all live in the same world. This world is known as "Prismatica", home to many continents and communities within those continents. Forests, jungles, swamps, you name it, they have it.

You might not be familiar with one rather unique biome, however, which has not been seen on any other planet in the system. Black sludge like water covers the ground, pillars of stone and minerals erupting from the dirt and water alike. They appear to be similar to obsidian for the most part, with the exception of certain icy blue pillars called "Chexima", which is the hardest and most sturdy material on Prismatica.

This biome also harbors trees made of bone and fungi, branches and leaves growing out of the bone structures like normal trees have. Mushrooms sprout from the bark like bone protecting the outside of the root system.

Belladonna (deadly nightshade), Monkshood, Elderberry, and Ghost Plants grow in this biome, making it very dangerous to traverse without proper wear and equipment.

A flower that is unique to Prismatica also grows in this biome, known as the "Devils Kiss", which is an emerald green flower with ends dipped in a deep red, which is how the name came about.

Field Guide Overview

Devils Kiss - Emerald green flower with ends dipped in a deep blood red. Grows in the Shade biome on Prismatica, and sometimes in regular forests near caves, but never inside the caves.

Chexima - Icy blue pillars that are the hardest and most sturdy material in Prismatica. It is similar to Obsidian with its structure and makeup, although it is sharper and often used for armor and tools, or machinery pieces.

Shade Biome - A biome on Prismatica that is highly toxic with the plants that grow there, and the black sludge like water covering the ashy dirt. Bone trees grow there as well.

Bone Trees - Trees made up of different thicknesses of bone, with the outside "bark" of the tree being the hardest to peel away. Fungi grow from the bark and base of the "root system". The Bone Tree has natural tree branches and leaves, which are the weakest part of the tree besides the inner system allowing fungi to grow and harmonize with the trees. [373 Words]

Cirrus lives in the skies and among the clouds, so the fauna and flora there relate to the skies and have connection to different weather or precipitation types.
1. flurryflies - These butterfly like creatures are most often seen when it just begins to snow. As they fly around, they spread little snow flurries from their wings.
2. Cloud Lillies (astrocumuluseria) - Theses star-shaped lilly-like flowers rise from the clouds themselves. Despite their star-shaped appearances, these flower types actually enjoy the sun and require sunlight to grow and bloom. There are some flowers that sprout at night, but the cloud lillies aren't one of thems.
3. Mistery snails - Despite mist being in their name, these creatures are sopping wet and almost entirely water. They tend to leave a mess wherever they go, and it can take a while to clean up after them. Still, they are a treasure for those who enjoy the rain because these creatures often come out when the rain begins and are well liked by younger fables.

fable: Cirrus
entry:
Cirrus’s star-bangled jewelry - Cirrus comes from a family of star-weaving fables responsible for hanging stars in the sky. Cirrus has left their family, but his jewelry still connects him to his clan. The stars in his jewelry come from star fragments and stardust compounded into star shapes. When those in Cirrus’ family are young, they are required to learn about stars and how to place them in the sky. The easiest part is learning how to collect stardust and preserve it to make larger stars. The first stars that a young fable can make are always very small and cannot shine in the sky. However, these stars are saved for when the fable is older. When the star-weaving fable reaches adulthood, they are presented with jewelry with their first stars to remind the fable of how far they have progressed. Cirrus was not able to progress with making stars as large as the other star-weaving fables, but his jewelry holds many fond memories for him.

Cirrus’s sketchbook and pen - Cirrus is an architect and artist always imagining new things and coming up with new ideas. They find it important to have their sketchbook on handy to sketch their ideas and make notes of interesting sights they see. Being able to makes drawings of new sights from nature allows Cirrus to incorporate nature-inspired designs into the building plans.

An old silver compass with star engravings - Cirrus has collected many compasses to help him sketch out building designs in his sketchbook. However, his favorite is his first compass, which Cirrus had purchased during their adolescence. This compass is a very sturdy one that is the first thing they had ever saved up for. When they were younger, Cirrus used to use the compass to make unique, angular star designs that were scoffed at by their elders. Still, Cirrus had persisted with his strange star designs until he eventually progressed into sketching out building designs.

A field guide for fable-related occurrences [270 Words]

Fable Trees

Fable trees are towering, knobby trees, they only grow in the homes of fables. They were once thought to be an anomaly in the world. That was until researchers realized they were created as a result of the dense magic around where the fables frequent. Fable trees are normal trees with radically altered growth due to excess magical energy. The leaves of these trees possess unique properties: when brewed into tea, they grant the drinker temporary access to the powers of a fable. The type of magic one gains depends entirely on the origin of the tree, and the powers of the fable who’s home it was harvested from.

Fable Crystals

Every once in a while, fables can go into a state of extended rest. They can stay dormant for up to centuries. During these dormant phases, fables withdraw from the world, allowing their immense magical energy to recede, while their influence over the surrounding land fades. As they rest, crystals grow around them. These crystals store the excess magic they create during this time. Fables can consume these crystals after their rest to replenish their strength. These crystals are rare and valuable, especially from older and more powerful fables. They can be created into artifacts, and it may be possible to use them as an energy source.

Fable Friends

When a fable finds a friend of a different species, over time, they form a bond. Through time, and genuine friendship, the creature the fable is bonded with gain characteristics similar to their fable friend (Ex. Eye colour changes, wings, horns, markings). Fables can sacrifice their own lifespan to increase those of their friends.

prompt: character - writing
fable: Ištaran & Nirah
entry: [261 Words]
Ištaran's Prized Possessions

Their most prized possession is a bag of holding. Using the magic of a fellow fable friend, Ištaran was able to obtain a messenger bag which can hold many items. Since Ištaran travels and delivers items to many fables, this bag is essential for what they do. Using this bag, Ištaran carries everything needed for their travels and more. The only downside, is that it's often too unorganized!

A sentimental possession Ištaran has, is a pocket watch from a human friend. This friend of theirs has since passed, but Ištaran keeps it as a reminder of their time together. When Ištaran first obtained it, they were in awe at the fine craftsmanship it had, something that fable hooves could never achieve. Ištaran would often pull it out on days where they especially miss this friend of theirs, missing the conversations they had. They would often dream about a world where fables and humans can live in tandem. This watch is a reminder to Ištaran in their mission as a mediator between species.

Nirah's Prized Possession

Nirah well... can't really hold much. Nirah has little care for what they possess, but the one item they have means the world to them. That's why Nirah keeps it swallowed and only regurgitates it if needed. This item is a smooth and round opal-like stone, it is unknown what the origin of this stone is, but it is the only source of power Nirah has which is independent to Ištaran. It is used by Nirah to deceive others, and protect Ištaran when they get into a dire situation.

Sorry if this isn't that well written, I had my ideas, but procrastinated writing it all down until last minute lol

✧ What's in their bag?
prompt: character - writing
fable: Hana
entry:
Even when he’s busy with college midterms alongside being a volleyball varsity, Hana’s bag is…surprisingly very neat and tidy?! Here are some notable items in it:

Sunscreen - "It gets super hot and sunny when going from one building to another inside the campus so it’s important to take care of one’s skin and avoid future skin conditions! I recommend getting this brand, it has multiple skin tones so that it doesn’t leave a white cast on you, and it doesn’t feel greasy too!"

A ton of hairpins - "The exam season takes a huge chunk of my time and I don’t have the energy to properly take care of my hair so I use the ol’ reliable “just put a bunch of hairpins until you can see” method."

A big bottle of water - "There was a time when I forgot to bring a bottle of water during a practice session and it left me wrecked especially when the water fountain wasn’t working near the gym. Made sure to bring one with me all the time now."

Extra clothes - "I have practice later at 4 pm, and of course, sweating is a norm in sports. Gotta avoid getting sick from damp clothes so I’ll have to change into new and dry ones afterwards."

A cat toy? - "Wait a minute- Oh! How did that get there?! Don’t mind that, it seems like Chee added an important and classified item in my bag. I should hide it…you guys didn’t see anything…okay?"

"Dang! it's time for my next class, gotta go! There seems to be a new guy over there who doesn't have his ID yet, why not ask the freshman what's in there bag?" He didn't leave the interviewer the time to reply before dashing over to a nearby building.
