On an ordinary day, in an ordinary town, in an ordinary bed... Tom awakes at six on the dot. How? You might ask. Well it was simple. You see, quite true to his roots, Tom was a cheese lover through and through. But in a town full of other cheese-loving rats, it took discipline and sheer power of will to have the day's pick at the cheese market's stock. And for that, it is no burden to open his eyes with the sun.

Today was no different. With an almighty jump, he launches himself from the depths of his covers, scurrying across cold, creaking floorboards to his wardrobe. What should he wear on this fine day? His gaze flicks across bedazzled and fanciful outfits to land on a modest, simple set of threads that was quite in fashion this summer season. Light, yet with just a touch of minimalist chic. He dons it with expert paws and heads straight for the door. The market awaits!

Though it was a beautiful day, the crisp morning air seems rather heavy indeed as he approaches the town square, carrying the discordant murmurs of a crowd to his alert ears.

"...has never happened before..."

"...could not foresee... children will have to go hungry..."

The snatches of conversation that floated past him sank his heart low, but Tom pushes forward to join his fellows around the stall at the entrance, a thronging mill that ebbed and flowed around the stall-owner, Jim, who was droning out the same few lines that he must have been saying for at least an hour.

"I am so very sorry, but there will be no cheese today here, or at any of the stalls. There was a delay with the shipments and the earliest we'll have any is tomorrow morning. But we still have an ample stock of fruits, nuts and other produce..."

The rest of Jim's words fade into a dull background hum.

No cheese? At all? How can this be?

For Tom, the cheese-lover who ate that very food on the daily, at least three times a day, it was akin to the world crashing down around his ears. Surely starvation was the only answer! In his despair, his voice rose to add to the chaos of others just like himself.

Just as it seemed the mess was about to turn into a mob, a piercing voice cuts through it all, sharp and neatly demanding their attention.

"Just what kind of scene do all of you think you're making?"

They quiet, and from the back, the crowd parts like water for a diminutive form. It was Judy, the rat in charge of the library.

"There's no cheese, sure. So what?"

Her words send a ripple through the crowd. Judy loved cheese as much as the next rat, they all knew that.

"I said," her voice rises, "so what?! You!" Judy points at random into the crowd, straight at Tom himself. "Have you ever eaten a strawberry?"

It's all he can do not to squeak in confusion, but under the multitude of stares, the words find their way out of his throat.

"Well... yes, last year. They were pretty good... sweet and tasty."

"There you have it!" Judy says victoriously. "Even if there's no cheese, it's just a day. Look, the day is beautiful, and Jim has all kinds of other wares for us to nibble upon. Would you rather be here acting like children, or out in the parks having a picnic?"

Her words have immediate effect, with a few turning to Jim to enquire about these... not-cheese produce he might have.

Tom, too, couldn't help the pang of embarrassment at his own actions. But that shame didn't last long, for Judy is quickly upon him.

"So, Tom? Shall we?" Her tail was jaunty in a manner that hinted at anticipation... and mischief.

"Shall we... do what?" Tom was quite confused.

"Like I said... it's a great day for a picnic. What do you say you and I go and get a tasting platter of new things to try and head to the park?"

He looks about, "wait, you and me?"

"I don't see anyone else I'm talking to right now," Judy blinks innocently, but is already stepping up to the stall.

"I... I would love to!" Tom follows along, his cheese-less despair already put to the back of his mind. It seemed it was going to be a great day after all.

Neverfound Island's beach was especially beautiful this time of day.

The sun was dipping below the horizon, coloring the sky in brilliant oranges and pinks. The waves were gently kissing the shore with faint tendrils of foam. Majesty, paws dug firmly into the sand, was trying her hardest not to cry, steeling her jaw enough to hurt.

Usually, on a Friday like this one, she'd be sitting at her favorite cafe, sipping on a fruit smoothie while she waited for her friends to join her. Today was different, though: today, she'd realized her friends didn't need her.

They hadn't done anything wrong, of course—Ocean, Ocellus, and Delphi were lovely, as they'd always been. Ocean's gentleness, Ocellus's playfulness, and Delphi's wisdom were indispensable. The group liked to meet at the cafe on Fridays, discussing how the week had been before planning for the upcoming weekend.

Recently, however, circumstances had changed. Not too long ago, Majesty's friends had come running up to their favorite table at the cafe, only to announce that they'd been approached by one of Neverfound's mysterious Guardians. The Guardian had proclaimed in no uncertain terms that Ocean, Ocellus, and Delphi had been selected to join their ranks. As members of Neverfound's Chosen, the trio would oversee the island's happenings and ensure its continued peace and prosperity.

It was, of course, the highest of high honors. Majesty had applauded her friends, buying them extra smoothies to celebrate. Yet even then, despite the joy and delight, she had a sinking feeling that things were about to change.

Majesty had been right: lots had changed since her friends' ascension to the Chosen. They'd all spoken gleefully of new friends they'd made in the group, from a mythical vulpine spirit to a group of cheery rats. Majesty had been happy for them—who wouldn't be, seeing their friends so pleased?—but looking back, she could sense the growing distance between herself and her closest companions.

She remembered all the Fridays they hadn't shown up to the cafe on time, claiming that official Chosen business had held them up. During one particularly embarrassing evening, a waitress had approached and asked her to move to a smaller table, as there were groups of guests coming who needed the larger space. Majesty had sputtered out apologies and tried to abscond, only for her friends to show up just in time. Back then, she'd been grateful, but now, she felt guilty. They hadn't needed to do that; in fact, they hadn't needed to come at all.

Majesty wasn't one of the Chosen—she was just an ordinary resident of the island, living a perfectly ordinary life. She was replaceable, and sooner or later, her friends would realize that too. They'd find someone more confident, more responsible, more...special. Who would they welcome into their group as they left Majesty behind? Perhaps one of those rats would take her place at the table....

Here come the tears, she thought. She couldn't hold them back any longer.

“Majesty?”

Majesty turned her head, only to see Ocean bounding toward her. She barely had time to react before her friend caught her in a hug.

“There you are!” Ocean said into Majesty's fur. “We were so worried!”

“Yeah!” Ocellus added, coming up next to her. “You weren't at the cafe, you know. Not feeling like smoothies today?”

“That's not what it is.” Delphi approached the group and tilted Majesty's chin up to meet her stare. “Something's on your mind. What is it?”

Majesty blinked back her tears. “It's...it's nothing. I just...I thought....” She shook her head. “I thought...maybe you guys didn't need me anymore.”

“Huh?” Ocellus's eyes went wide. “Don't need you? You're one of our best friends, Majesty!”

“We do need you,” Ocean said, still holding Majesty close. “Nothing could ever change that.”

Delphi nodded. “This group wouldn't be complete without you.”

Majesty couldn't stop herself from sniffling. “Really...?”

“Really,” said Ocean. “We promise.”

“I...I love you guys,” Majesty replied, as her face finally broke into a smile.

“Aw, we love you too!” Ocellus exclaimed. “Now, how's about we go get something to eat? The cafe's still open....”

“I think we'd all like that,” Delphi said. “Let's go.”

As the group of friends made their way away from the shore, Majesty paused to catch a glimpse of the setting sun. Neverfound Island's beach really was beautiful.

Sometimes, what feels like a bad day might just be all in your head.

Raymond groggily opened his eyes one foggy morning to the sight of an unfamiliar, fuzzy blob out his bedroom window. Fumbling for the pair of glasses lost somewhere on his book-covered bedside table, he felt his heart racing beneath his fur. After all these years of searching… could it be? Had he finally found it?
Before he could get a better look with his newly enhanced, bespectacled vision, the sight had cleared and all appeared normal outside. Drat!
Raymond bit his lip and paused for a moment before pulling out his phone and pressing speed dial. There was only one person who would understand the urgency.
“Hi, Harry? Yeah, listen, we gotta go. I think I saw Bigfoot, for real this time.”

“He was right here!” Raymond gestured to his friend. “Look!” Odd footprints lay in the dirt surrounding the pair, who had been searching the perimeter for clues. The gray skies were only getting gloomier, but that did nothing to deter resiliance.
“Maybe we need to go further. Like, out that way, by the forest.” Harry suggested.
Raymond hated to admit it, but he was never the biggest fan of the forest near his house. It felt claustrophobic and lonely- but in the name of science, he supposed he’d have to suck it up. Take one deep breath, and then let it go.
A chill went up his spine as they ventured further into the wood, trying their best to pick up a trail from what they had been given. But the tracks quickly dried up and there was no scent to be found in the crisp, chill air. On top of that, the clouds began to rumble and small droplets of rain fell, muddying the ground below. If Bigfoot wasn’t lost, the pair of explorers soon could be.
“Ugh, we’ll never find him now!”
Harry put a palm up to gauge the weather and turned to his gray-furred friend. “Hey, at least we got out here. I haven’t seen you this excited in a while. And look how far we are in the woods!”
Raymond looked around him. The fog was clearing, and yet all he could see around him were trees. Normally this would’ve been pretty terrifying, but Harry was right- he had done it, and though they hadn’t been successful, everything was okay. And it was certainly a step up from all the true failures and fear that had held him back lately.
“I mean, it’s okay if you wanna head back. I can start trying to pick up on the trail home.”
Newly emboldened, the gray cat shook his head. “Guaranteed rainbow after this stuff clears up… wanna go look for the pot of gold?”

Henry thought it was time, but not yet. His eyes opened again, barely making out the figure on the floor beside him. His old eyesight wasn't as reliable as it used to be, but one sniff told him it was Sarah. It seemed that Sarah hadn't moved all night. Henry knew she never left him; the time was getting near, and Sarah knew it. At the sound of a long, drawn-out sigh, Sarah shifted on the floor to stare at the old dog in his bed. His fur had gone whitewashed several years ago, he had arthritis in his bones, and he was growing more and more tired with each passing day. She watched as a pink tongue licked at his dry nose. Sarah's face was still puffy from the previous night's tears. She stretched out a hand to stroke his soft fur and Henry's eyes closed again.

"I wish I could have done more, Henry." Sarah sniffed.

Henry's ears perked, seemingly at the sound of his name, but Henry realized he could understand every word that Sarah spoke. As much as it pained him, he lifted his head to look in her direction. He sniffed the air, making sure it was, in fact, Sarah that he was smelling. There was no mistaking the young woman he's known since puppyhood. He waited for her to say something else.

"You are the best dog I could have ever had. You're such a good boy-" Sarah's voice cracked and more tears streaked down her cheeks. She pet him again, burying her fingertips into his coat.

Henry wanted to stand up and to lick the salty tears from her face. He hated to see her cry, especially over him. He had to do something, anything-

"S-Sarah-" His own voice startled him. There was silence. Sarah was staring wide-eyed at Henry.

"Henry?" She trembled.

"Please, don't cry, Sarah." His voice was much smoother than his bark. "You've done so much for me all my life, I can only hope I've given back to you."

Sarah's breath was caught in her chest. The dog she's known for seventeen years started talking to her. Her thoughts were at a standstill. She could only sit and stare at Henry, listening intently to what he had to say after all these years. Henry seemed to gather his own thoughts and took a breath.

"I remember the day you brought me home. I was so happy you chose me, even though I wasn't sure why! I just knew I wanted to go home with you. You were so much smaller then." He seemed to have smile on his muzzle. "I remember our first car trip. You let me hang my head out of the window for hours and you were laughing! You have the most wonderful laugh. I'll never forget it." Henry paused, catching his breath. Speaking like this took a lot of air.

"I also remember when you came home from that boy's house. There were a lot of different smells you brought home with you, but the strongest one was sadness. You slammed the bedroom door that day and wouldn't let me in for what felt like hours, but after a while, you opened the door and pulled me under the blankets with you, and we stayed like that all night. I never wanted to leave you alone after that." He sighed a big sigh. "I was so happy when we moved into this place together. And all those times you took us in the car to go get treats! And all the nights I laid next to you to keep you company, you kept me company, too. I love you, Sarah. You've given me more than any dog could ever deserve. I've lived a good life because of you."

Henry rested his head back down on his dog bed, feeling more tired than he had before. After a few moments, Sarah leaned over and hugged him. She didn't have words for what she had just witnessed, but she felt more peace than she had in several months since Henry's health began declining. Sarah could only muster the strength to say one thing.

"Thank you."

Our winner for March 2025 is...

Sumshines! :) You will receive your prize shortly.

You may have noticed that we only received one entry last month. I spoke with other CS staff, as I hadn't thought of a plan in the event that this happened. After some discussion, we believe that the fairest way to handle this was to award the prize to the person who entered. Your time and effort is immensely appreciated.
