As cliche as it is, I do really like a damsel in distress trope. XD More specifically, I like it when the romantic interest of a strong male protagonist is in danger and the strong MC throws himself into harm's way to save her. I'm happy to pick up anything that has this kind of trope regardless of how bad the overarching plot might be. haha

LOL, i also suffer from an obsession with random classic tropes. damsel in distress being one of them , enemies to lovers definitely being another. theres nothing wrong with having your cozy tropes ^^ <3

Ooo, I love giving my characters personality and adding little random things that make the world and/or characters stick out. Like one of my characters that I've previously mentioned refuses to use doorknobs/handles. Just random little things that don't usually mean much to the story

what's your favorite aspect of world-building and/or character design?

World building: I confess that while I'm a huge fan of intricate world building as a reader, I struggle with building worlds myself. Personally, I'm a big fan of the theory that everything a writer writes is part of their characters world. It makes for some really fun character building having everyone kind of connected throughout the world in a way. Becky Chambers and Tamora Pierce are two authors that I really enjoy how they do their world building.

Character design: It's been awhile since I've created an original character. My old OC's were VERY over the top. I read a lot of YA (nothing wrong with YA it just isn't my thing much anymore) as a young person and that really influenced my characters. Nowadays, I mostly write poetry so that's my main focus and I tend to be very abstract in my poetry so they don't necessarily have characters.

Oh wait! I do have a couple OC's now that I think about it. An octopus nonbinary woman/alien and her marine biologist love interest (also a woman, yay lesbians). And a security guard butch lesbian and her genie love interest and her witchy best friend. Oh, and their human woman third.

So, I guess nowadays my characters are very much diversity/inclusion oriented. I want to tell the stories of the people in my communities so we can feel less alone. Just like other authors have done for me <3

what's your favorite aspect of world-building and/or character design?

World Building: Lore writing. Working out the kinks in a world, getting it to match the vague storyline I often have in mind before I even get the characters! From developing more realistic settings such as my Aftermath storyline, which is just Earth but where humans have vanished and nature is reclaiming all (this is more a fun way for me to bring my university research years back into a way I find fun - looking at how climate change can impact the world as it, and how humans have impacted what currently exists), to my more unrealistic storyline of Kirat, a world of advanced feral felines located in the fictional Elysian System, which is part of the real Sunflower Galaxy. The more I can spend building a world, the more I get involved and the closer I am to not dropping the storyline. I have a whole collection of abandoned storylines that I just couldnt get into as deeply as these two now.

      Character Design: I dont visually design many characters per say - I think the only one I personally visually designed is my giraffe Flam, and even then she is a normal giraffe :D However, I love collecting characters that I feel fit with my world building! This is probably why I have so many characters I no longer use tbf, they are part of dropping storylines and they dont fit in my current visions... But designing on personalities, backstories, etc; I love most parts! Depending on the storyline depends on how a character gets developed;
->Flam hasnt changed in a long time in her basic traits, but her world view has changed as I have grown up. She started as very childish (cause I was a child when I first made her), but as I have aged, so as her view on the world; more mature and understanding.
->Then there are my cats of Kirat; Alix and Robin were friends, who became partners in crime, who became lovers, who become enemies in an over-exaggerated lovers quarrel that consumes a whole city. Its a twisted storyline, but I loved it.

      Hellllooooooooo

First off sorry I have been gone so long 😭😭 I missed y'all and I'm pumped to get back to nerding out over writing things! c: I have had to prioritize other life things the last few months, but I really miss/need the joy that writing gives me so I'm going to try to pop in here more frequently as motivation >:)

what's your favorite aspect of world-building and/or character design?

Honestly world building is one of my favorite parts of writing, I have so many worlds developed that will probably never actually have written stories about them lol. I love creating Rich backgrounds, histories, unique magical creatures and magic systems, all of it! Also, because I have read so much fantasy (which is what I primarily write) I am cringingly aware of cliches/overused tropes and I feel like having well-developed worlds helps to avoid cliche-feeling stories.

That said I do struggle more with the character building side, that kind of falls to the sidelines that a lot of cases lol and I definitely feel like that's a weak point of my writing. Particularly with non-main characters! If I'm not careful I would end up with 3 MCs with personality and everyone else bunch of NPCs. 😅

I got some catching up to do now (life's messy and my snake is currently sick). Thus I apologize about the coming long post; but this is in order not to double-post. (:

First off, hi and welcome everyone who's joined in here since my last post! :D Nice to meet you all! :D

@ten; I'm completely the same! I feel so horrible towards some of my characters due to the mental health-issues I've caused them for the sake of the story's progress ... xD But I still love them and hope they can feel it anyway <3

Omg, I'm so happy to finally meet someone else who also uses dreams as a base for stories! People has always been quite negative towards me whenever I say that some of my stories are dreams that I've written down ... o: So this makes me so happy to know that I'm not all alone! In my opinion dreams can be such good inspiration sources for stories. (: And true, the vidid nightmares aren't that great. xD Strangely enough the stories that I've based off dreams has sometimes gone from very nightmare-like scenarios into lighter ones ... Or basically just been a nightmare all along but still being something I've enjoyed to the point of wanting to memorize. And how I enjoy a nightmare I still don't quite understand myself ... I guess it might not be scary enough for me to dislike it, or something xD

Thank you, hugs <3 I managed to send it it just in time and now it's the waiting while they're judging. (: Apparently they will announce the results in March.

@Khefri; Lol, sounds like me when I first started writing poetry too when I was a kid! I secretly thought "it seems sort of fun" but no one else around me wrote poetry; thus I felt l had to keep it a secret and only people I met online in various different communities knew about my poems. ^^' And I agree with them being a great way to express one's feelings through. It has and still is the only way I know of that helps me get through difficult times.

      what's your favorite media trope?
Truth to be told, I do enjoy stories that has somewhat of an open ending that allows the reader to make their own decision of what would happen next based on the clues given by the author. Yet at the same time I hate them, lol. And I really like stories where the evil side wins; it's refreshing compared to the good side always winning. Yet I cannot seem to write such stories myself as of now.

And as for reading (although I cannot imagine myself ever writing such things) is manga where people reincarnate into games/stories and where usually the villain falls in love with the main character or the other way around. I've been reading so much of that since I ended up on sick leave from work due to my burn out. For some reason it's kind of relaxing to read that ... I don't have to use my brain too much and simply follow along. xD

what's your favorite aspect of world-building and/or character design?

World building: Oh I am one of those who truly love spending time in my imaginary worlds and honestly enjoy the entire process so much when playing god and making a world. The only thing I can say that I like the least is making proper maps. I've tried. But it's my number one weak point in my opinion and it takes forever.
I feel more connected to both my characters and my stories if I do take the time to work well enough on the world itself where they live and where the story in question occurs. I enjoy using the aspects of how our own world has come to be when working with my imaginary worlds and looking at our own history to come up with things I want to have where my characters live.

My only two finished attempts in making world maps for two of my imaginary worlds:
      Image
      Image

Character designs; I enjoy characters that has well-worked personalities and behaviours. That is what I also enjoy the most with developing for the characters I mainly only write about along with how they interact with their surroundings and the people they meet. I rarely focus too much on the outward looks of my characters that I write about and do struggle with describing their looks as I tend to get hung up on the tiniest detail (I tend to only point out eye colour, hair colour/hair length, some piece of clothing and colour of said clothing - but nothing deeper). Thus I always try to focus on trying to make them come across as a person both you and me could run into on the street. My goal whenever creating characters are to make them as realistic as possible. Even though I've met many of them in dreams I'm still somewhat scared of focus too much on their outward looks. Because of that I'm even more terrified of drawing them - even though I often want to draw them. And I still attempt doing it to challenge myself; so here's 37 out of 115 characters that I write stories about:

      Image

As for my characters that I either design for the purpose of drawing; or that actually are for stories that are meant to be drawn and not written. Or characters I've adopted from other people's species; I tend to have more of a focus on both their outward appearance as well as how they behave. Because as I said earlier; my goal is always to get them as close to feeling as they are a real-life individual even if they are nothing but a made-up person that doesn't exist in our world or have the strangest looks that never in this lifetime could exist on Earth.

But all in all, I truly do love character development and my main focus is always what's on the inside to make them feel like their own person. I use parts of my own experiences with others, feelings or even things I've been through in this life as inspiration to give them somewhat of a realistic aspect. At times I also use what others has told me or things I've read that other's been through as inspiration as well. And of course I'm using what happens in the story they belong to in order to help develop them as a person and have them grow and evolve along with the story.

      Hiya Vaz!
Ahhhh map creation! I love seeing your maps! Is there a certain software or website you like to use?

I have such a love/hate relationship with map building. I'm just enough of a nerd that I want to take into account the science of it, like the tectonic plates, planet spin & tilt, geography-based climate, but I haven't found a good way to include all that with a software that actually lets me shape continents how I want. And I'm not enough of an artist to do it myself XD when I get to my PC later today I will edit to share some of my current map creations!

you can call me: Troops, Hougetsu, any of my OCs' names if you don't mind, calling me by whoever is in my icon or signature is fair game as well! ^ ^
      my pronouns are: They/It
here's a bit about me/ my writing journey: I started out with roleplaying then got into Object Show Community camps which encouraged me to begin writing. I want to expand out beyond my usual scope of characters and develop how various worlds work whenever they're building off canon or OC related worlds.
anything else? A lot of my worldbuilding and OCs have specific gimmicks to them. Mainly tentacles.
I will make a fancier signature someday. Current Icon: Kota from The New Denpa Men! (He roams in my signature too.)
