Plot

Magic is not inherently something that one either has or does not have. Everyone has the ability to learn to cast spells - it just takes the right amount of patience, determination and discipline. Some may find it a bit easier than others, and this sought-after skill is just the thing that many grow up deciding that they want a career in, to help and enhance the lives of others. Regulations ensure that no one is just using magic to harm one another, although 'magic duels' between two magic users of a similar level are typically permitted. There are even sanctioned tournaments held for those strong spellcasters that just want to show off. (Although this, of course, means there's unregulated, underground tournaments that organisers pay off officials to look the other way, but that's a different matter).

But how can one learnmagic? Enter the prestigious Featherwick University of the Arcane, an institute that young adults from all over the country, no, the world, who are interested in learning magic and spellcasting want to attend. Of course, there are many other academies just like it, but Featherwick is perhaps the most prestigious, for its range of classes, comprehensive education, and the fact that most graduates are able to find a job in a sorcery-based career within six months. That, and they even accept adult students that may not be of typical college/university age (although it should be noted that even students of Featherwick are not immune to the potential of student loans, but scholarships and other funding is often available).

Every year, hundreds, if not, thousands, of applications are sent in by hopeful students of all permitted ages. Only about a quarter of applicants are invited to take part in the entrance 'exam', which consists of a series of five (5) rigorous trials that are designed to test the applicants on skill, confidence, determination and nerve. Those that pass all 5 are then officially accepted into Featherwick, where they can choose the Track that they wish to take, each related to a Season. There are several classes that all students take, but each Track, or Season, has their own types of magic to study, which will, of course, change career opportunities.

But, finally, finally, you are one of the few who makes it and it's all going to be so worth it. But is there a hint of unrest between the faculty members..? And what secrets might Featherwick have to hide? And what about the rumours of prominent spellcasters starting to go missing without a trace?

About Featherwick

Postby Consulting_Angel » Sun Dec 29, 2024 10:20 am

Featherwick's campus is an open one - much like a university. A central quad, four buildings make up the majority of the campus, plus an outdoor amphitheatre where welcoming speeches and graduations are held (alongside any other assemblies that take place). There's also a large gardens area to the east, with winding paths, statues, pavilions and fountains, and many varieties of outdoor plants to explore. To the north-west, is a forest where some outdoor classes may take place and is also open for students to explore.

Main Building - This three-storey building is where all the classes take place. Classrooms are very big, with a mixture of layouts to allow for book studying or practical classes, depending on what is required for a specific class. There's also an astronomy tower, with a ceiling that can open up to allow for a true study of the stars and the moon - particularly for those students studying that type of magic. Plus, a greenhouse annex for the classes involving plant magic. There's also a medical wing, as well as a fully-equipped gym and swimming pool.

Dormitories - This building has all the en-suite dormitories. Students have their own dorm, spanning over five floors. The ground floor has accessible dorms for those that require them, and there's three elevators as well as stairs to get to the upper floors. There's both stairs and a ramp to get into the building. Each floor has a recreation/lounge room, and the ground floor also has a 'cinema room'.

Dining Hall - One of the smaller buildings, being only one floor. This is where all meals are served, breakfast from 6am-10am, lunch from 11am-2pm, and dinner 4pm-7pm. All meals are a self-serve, canteen/buffet-style affair, but on Saturdays and Wednesdays, there is an additional dinner period where a full three- or four-course meal is served, though requires tickets being booked and has a limited capacity. On these days, the regular buffet-style for dinner is held from 3pm-6pm, with the seated meal taking place from 6:30pm-8pm.

Library - A large, two-storey building filled with both academic and fiction books for students to browse and read. There's plenty of study spaces, both communal and private. Meticulously labelled sections make it easier to find just what you're looking for, and the librarians are more than happy to help direct you to where you need to be. Since the shelves are floor-to-ceiling, there's sliding ladders for each of the shelves to reach the higher up ones.

For all classes, assemblies and the sit-down meals at the dining hall, students are required to wear a uniform, which is provided to them. Regular clothes can be worn outside of these instances.

- White, black or grey button-up shirt/blouse with a tie (the colour of which corresponds to the season they chose).
- Navy blue knee length skirt or trousers (or a hybrid between the two if desired).
- A shoulder cape, a long, one-shoulder cape, and a longer coat/cloak for the colder months that the inside layer and are detailed with their chosen season's colours. Any one of these can be worn, regardless of weather.
- Waistcoats, the front of which are navy blue, and the back is the colour corresponding to their chosen season group.

Track Colours (the main colour and detail colour)
Spring - Sakura pink (+ grass green)
Summer - Forest green (+ ocean blue)
Autumn - Royal purple (+ autumn leaf red)
Winter - Ice blue (+ mint green)

The Trials & Subjects

Postby Consulting_Angel » Sun Dec 29, 2024 10:21 am

The Trials
Before being officially accepted, a large number of applicants are invited to take part in a series of trials - like something of an unhinged entrance exam.

- Rules
- Applicants have four 'lives'. As soon as they lose their last one, they are automatically teleported out of the trial area, and into a waiting area where they will have to wait for the trials to finish.
- Any method of cheating will result in instant failure and loss of all 'lives'.
- There is no skipping of trials, and all must be successfully completed. You can choose the order in which you take on the first four trials. Accommodations will be made for those that require them.

- 1st Trial - The Maze
- A simple labyrinth made of hedges... except the hedges that will try and trick you, and the creatures inside that may either help or hinder. 15 minutes to reach the center, and lose a life every 2 minutes you exceed this time.

- 2nd Trial - The Doors
- Before you are three doors and five keys. In a group with three others, you will take turns choosing a key and door. Each incorrect choice after your first one loses you a life.

- 3rd Trial - The Dome
- Applicants are assigned a bug (from either butterfly, cicada, dragonfly or mantis) and a small net, before entering a large greenhouse-type dome, with pathways, large tropical plants and lots of flying bugs. Up to 20 applicants may be competing at the same time.
- Applicants must use patience, care and cunning to net their assigned bug, and avoid the mosquitoes, all in one hour.
- Wrongly caught bugs or a bite from a mosquito docks a life, taken automatically.

- 4th Trial - The Bridge
- A true test of courage and nerve, a rope bridge with a few planks missing is suspended over a fast-flowing river. The task is simple. Get to the other side of the bridge.
- Those that fall are safely, automatically, teleported back to the starting side.

- 5th Trial - The Chase
- The remaining applicants partake in a race to the boarding area, tackling and avoiding obstacles. There's only a certain number of spaces at the boarding area, so it's a true race to the finish.

Subjects

There are some general classes that all students study.
- Transmutation (changing things to become other things)
- Runic Magic (decipher and draw runes, cast a spell)
- Potions (what it says on the tin)
- Ritual Magic (spells that require a ritual & ingredients to be cast)
- Magical Theory (a non-magic-casting class that focuses on the theory of magic, *why* it is possible, *how* it was discovered and came about to be used in different ways)

The following classes are only studied by the Track/Season they fall under. If students are found to be falling behind or struggling in these classes, they may be moved to a different Track to take classes that they may fare better in.

Spring
- Phytokinesis (plant magic)
- Sound/music magic (spells cast through songs, spells that can manipulate sound)

Summer
- Solar magic (drawing power from the sun, especially for fire/heat/light spells)
- Protection (shields/wards)

Autumn
- Aerokinesis (wind/air magic)
- Hydrokinesis (water magic)

Winter
- Cryokinesis (ice magic)
- Lunar magic (drawing power from the moon to help cast spells, particularly sleep/dream magic, and illusionary magic)

Re: ๐•พ๐–•๐–Š๐–‘๐–‘๐–ˆ๐–†๐–˜๐–™๐–Š๐–—๐–˜ (Accepting Characters)

Postby Consulting_Angel » Sun Jan 19, 2025 2:16 pm

It is the Wednesday of the first academic week, so there's already been a couple of days of classes, but since Wednesday is a clear schedule, gives everyone a bit of freedom as to where they start/what they do to begin with. It's about midday, so the dining hall is currently serving lunch.

Rohan Wilder
23 | Male | Spring Student
Location: 1st Floor Rec Room
Tagged: Open
Rohan had already had lunch, having been at the dining hall just after 11am - the start of the lunch serving time. There hadn't been any real reason for it, though he had skipped breakfast and hadn't had anything else he'd planned to do at the time, so it just made sense. Although it had meant everything was fresh - offerings were replenished throughout the serving time, but it was nice to get the first round of food. Now, though, he was sat in the 1st floor recreation room of the dormitory building, perched up on a bar stool-type seat next to a high top table. Rohan balanced his guitar on his knee - held steady with a hand, while on the table in front of him was a notebook, which he was occasionally writing in between strumming a few notes and quietly humming what was presumably some lyrics that he had in mind. This was nothing to do with the magic he was studying, but he did wonder what it would be like to actually write a song that was a spell in itself. Maybe he did partially hope that was what he'd figure out. Perhaps he could make it something he worked on over the next three years, a sort of three-year dissertation. It would certainly be a lot of work, he might only make a couple of lines of a song into a new spell. It was nice to think about.

For now, though, Rohan focused on actually finishing his song. The room was empty at the moment, so he was comfortable with making a little noise. Sure, he could have stayed in his room to do this, but staying holed up in his room was just a bit too asocial for him. It wasn't as if he was making a huge racket, so it was unlikely he'd be disruptive to anyone else that might want to also hang out in the rec room - and if someone else really didn't want to be in a communal room where there would be noise then there were other places they could go. He picked a few chords on his guitar, repeating them a few times as he hummed the same melody of lyrics, until he had an idea, so he stopped playing and wrote out a few more lines, before trying them out, crossing out a few words to rewrite and make it flow better... before drawing square brackets around a few lines as he considered scrapping them and starting again. He barely noticed any other students entering the rec room.

Astoria Okoro
37 | Female | Head of Spring
Location: Gardens
Tagged: Open
With no classes for the day, Astoria was taking the free time she had to spend a while in the gardens of the university - to the surprise of perhaps no one. She would use her magic to help nudge the flowers that were a little wilted to perk up and bloom properly, or tend to the many herbs and other potion ingredient plants that had their own section within the gardens referred to as the Allotment, since it was technically a community growing space, and tutors and students alike could harvest the ingredients they needed for their potions or perhaps ritual spells. Though she did not live on-campus, she would often also visit during the times the university was closed so that she could ensure the Allotment in particular was still thriving. Especially with it being autumn already, parts of the Allotment would soon be ready to harvest and have the patches re-sown and replenished.

But there was also something else on her mind. Astoria kept herself very well-informed as to what was happening in the Spellcaster community, and one of the big things were the reports of high-profile, or otherwise highly talented and well known Spellcasters were going missing. Only one or two a month, but it had been going on for six months, and no trace of those that had disappeared had been found. Even using magic yields nothing. Unintentionally, it had been kept very hushed, but anyone that did even a little bit of research - even those that didn't use magic - would find plenty of articles and conspiracy theories. Astoria was concerned. She considered herself, and many of the tutors of Featherwick, to also be among those Spellcasters that were well known and highly powerful. Would one of them end up going missing? Astoria did not really like to think about it.

Elias Knight
28 | Male | Magical Theory Tutor
Location: Office
Tagged: Open
Though it was technically a day off for him, Elias was in his office, grading the quizzes that he'd given his students for their first class with him of the year. For the First Years, it'd been a light, general quiz to gauge whether they had any prior knowledge about his subject, and of Magic and Spellcasting in general. It was the type of thing that he could tell which students had just guessed at answers, or if they actually seemed to know the answers. For the Second and Third Years, the quiz was to briefly recap what he'd previously taught them, to see what they remembered and if there was anything in particular he might have to cover again. It was an easy way to start the year, especially for himself... except when it came to actually having to go over the quizzes. Unfortunately, this was one of the things that there had not been a successful, accurate spell developed for. No matter.

Halfway through the stacks of papers, Elias stood up, putting his pen down on his desk, and stretching. He could take a quick break, give his wrist a rest and not have his back hunched over for too long. He waved a hand dismissively at the graded papers, muttering an incantation that caused the papers to float over to a set of boxes, sorting themselves out into the Years that the quizzes had been for. The rest of the ungraded quizzes remained on his desk - all First Year ones. It wasn't that he wasn't looking forward to grading them, but he had learned very quickly to not have any open-ended questions on it. The one at the top of the pile caught his eye, though, and he picked it up, reading it over, both sides of the page, all twenty questions. Interesting... it was very rare that any First Year had got almost all the questions correct - he'd only had this happen once before. As he looked over the quiz, he heard a knock on his office door. Without looking up, he called out, "Enter!" and Elias cast a spell to partially open the door.

Lyra Damaris
22 | Female | Winter Student
Location: Astronomy Tower/Corridor
Tagged: Open
Lyra woke up. Rubbing her eyes, she was a little confused, but a look at the time on her phone - it was already midday. At least it was Wednesday, so there weren't any classes she was late for or had missed. She'd had a Lunar Magic class the previous night, and had stayed a bit longer after the class to work with some more practice and to study the stars on her own time. Unfortunately, the astronomy tower could be extremely comfortable, with large, thick and soft cushions that students could lie back on when the roof was open, and several powerful telescopes, not to mention the soft lighting and warmth. It was just a little too easy for Lyra to end up falling asleep before she realised it, especially if she was practising some sort of dream or sleep magic, and then just staying asleep for much longer than intended. It hadn't been unpleasant, though, and Lyra was almost tempted to spend the entire day here. She probably shouldn't, though. Someone might be wondering where she was.

Lyra stood up, stretching, taking out the hair scarf she was wearing and retying it around her head and hair. Then she had a quick spin in the flowy skirt she was still wearing, before tidying up the equipment she'd been using the previous night, and packing away her star study books. She'd have to get back to her dorm first to have a shower and change her clothes before going to the dining hall for lunch. Once she was finished and ready to leave the astronomy tower, Lyra picked up her bag, and she went to the door, pulling it open. Still unlocked, thank goodness. She had been a little concerned about that, thinking she might have been locked in and forgotten about.
She moved out into the corridor, and started to hustle down the corridor. There weren't really any rules about running in the university, but it probably wasn't advised.

Paz Martinez||18||Female||Autumn 1st Year||Location: Elias' Office||Tagged: Elias

Paz stepped into the office, notebook in hand. Despite it being a free day, her bag was stuffed with textbooks, and the stains on her hand spoke to an extensive note-taking session. Now that she was free of all the entry-level blathering, she'd taken the opportunity to get some real work done. The school's library was thankfully robust, far more than her library at home. Much time would no doubt be spent there, while she wasn't suffering through simpletons figuring out how to trace a rune without blowing their fingers off. She approached Elias' desk at a speed that bordered on alarming, pulling a pen out from somewhere in her hair.

"Professor Knight," she said, flipping open her notebook, "I've been doing some further research into magical theory, and was hoping you'd be able to answer some questions. Specifically concerning the extant domains of magic, as outlined in Arenfaldt's On Manipulation of Fundamental Forces." Not a book they'd be covering in her first, year, or even her second, but it pertained the most to her project, and Paz was more than confident in her grasp of the basic principles. It had been a fruitful read, but she wanted to run her ideas by someone knowledgeable in the matter. She knew plenty, but peer review was the basis for all good research.

Serena Wallace- f- 20- Spring second year student- bi; Lila- SO open- 3 siblings- Tags: Astoria

The tanned one was still in the dining hall, having come in a bit late. Even for her this was strange but sheโ€™d justโ€ฆgotten there a bit later. She hadnโ€™t really been thinking. She had finished her lunch, but was still sat in the dining hall, and she looked around a moment. Shaking her head, she hummed quietly as she picked up her garbage. She went to throw it away, and returned the tray and or dishes. Big brown eyes took one last look about the dining hall. She brushed at long dark reddish brown hair.

She thought of where she could go next. Sheโ€™d always loved flowers and nature, part of the whole reason sheโ€™d even entered the spring track. Shaking her head, she hummed quietly as she thought about it. She could easily go to the gardens. She continued to think about it a moment. Finally, she nodded to herself and decided yes, sheโ€™d go out to the gardens. She headed there, and wasnโ€™t actually expecting to run into anyone. However, she found the head of spring, Astoria Okoro, out there.

Honestly, it shouldnโ€™t have been any surprise to her.

She spoke up, saying โ€œHโ€ฆHello maโ€™am.โ€

Sirenn Wallace- m- 20- Summer Second year student- gay; Theodore- (SO)- Tags: open for Theodore

The tanned one sighed as he looked around a moment. His brown eyes, framed by longer lashes, perhaps saw some other students around. There werenโ€™t many where he was at, as there were many places here. There was the dining hall, rec rooms on each floor, gardens, the forestโ€ฆThere was a library and a pool and a gym and a tower. Specifically a tower for Astronomy. There were other places as well. It stood to reason not every single student would be in one area of the Featherwick Campus.

Shaking his head, the reddish brown haired one thought of his sister a moment. Wondering what she might be doing right about now. Blinking, he sighed and shook his head a second time. He brushed at his hair, which just brushed his shoulders. He then glanced around a moment more. Before deciding to move on from where he was, though maybe he should stay. He actually wanted to go find Theodore. The two were becoming friends or moving in that direction, and he also had a growing crush on him.

Jessel Autumn- f- 24- Autumn third year student- pan demi; Kai- parents, siblings- Tags: open

The creamy peachy skinned one, with freckles on her arms and legs, hummed. She brushed at her upper back length ginger curls. She reached up to scratch at her a moment. She parted her hair instead of having bangs, as it just looked so much nicer. She didnโ€™t really like bangsโ€ฆShe wouldnโ€™t say bad things about people who had bangs, she just personally didnโ€™t like having bangs. She thought a moment, about her box. She had jewelry and keepsakes in there, the jewelry being ones made of metals that would give her rashes.

She had to keep those ones in the box, since she couldnโ€™t wear them. She also had charms and things from pendants and bracelets that had broken. She hadnโ€™t wanted to get rid of the charms. She also had patches and pins and things such as that. Smiling, she blinked brown eyes and looked around. She was in the library, so she headed over to the shelves of books. She grabbed a fiction book which she thought looked interesting. She then headed to a table, and sat down so she could read the book.

Genn had had a Lunar Magic class the previous night. Lyra had been in said class, as she was a second year and he was a third year. Heโ€™d left the astronomy tower, but she hadnโ€™t. Not that heโ€™d noticed, but heโ€™d definitely notice when he went back. Which he was going to do precisely now. He was already thinking of heading back to the tower, just for a bit anyway. He smiled as he thought of the tower itself a moment. It was a very nice place to be, with the top that could open up and a variety of cushions. Shaking his head, he began to head off in that direction. He wasnโ€™t expecting to nearly run into Lyraโ€ฆShe was already in the corridor leading from there. She was jogging or running, either way she was moving along pretty fast.

He quickly hopped to the side, and stared at her a momentโ€ฆThen he shook his head and smiled, saying โ€œHey, Lyra.โ€ He wondered silently a moment if sheโ€™d fallen asleep in the towerโ€ฆHe wasnโ€™t going to say anything about it though, she might not appreciate that. Instead, he asked โ€œAre you headed to lunch?โ€ He then realized she might be headed to the dorms instead. He shook his head at himself, and silently scolded himselfโ€ฆThen he stopped doing that, because what was the point? He didnโ€™t need to scold himself over that kind of thing. He tilted his head a moment as he looked at her, since he was lost in thought. He then seemed to realize it and blinked. He shook himself as though coming out of a daze or a dream, and waited to hear what her answer was.
